The Hubble Space Telescope was made possible through several technological advancements. NASA developed reusable space shuttle technology to enable maintenance of satellites in orbit. Increased battery capacity and solar energy collection allowed satellites to remain in orbit longer. Perkin-Elmer developed new mirror polishing techniques to create Hubble's precise primary mirror. NASA, the Marshall and Goddard Space Flight Centers, Lockheed, Perkin-Elmer, and ESA all contributed to developing Hubble's technologies. Hubble has produced extremely detailed images, discovered new planets, and helped determine properties of the universe.
