7. B. LESSON PROPER
Good morning again class “ Good morning Ma’am”
As I can see from your scores some
of you already have a background
knowledge of our discussion for
today, very good. To those who got
low scores no worries class because
we will deal with every bit of
information included in our topics
for today
But before we get to that I want you
to focus on the screen and read with
your eyes this situation.
P1 and P2 are siblings, they both
have the same color, the same set of
ears and shape of face.
Students are listening and looking
at the PowerPoint presentation
8. Their color is the same as their mothers’,
while their ears and face look the same
as their fathers’. They have friends
named P11, P12, and P13 who are also
siblings. These three almost look the
same as their parents but sometimes act
differently than them, some of their
features are kind of distorted. P11, P12
and P13’s cousins almost look the same
as theirs but also misbehave and have
that odd looks and certain
characteristics compare to normal
young in their community. What may be
the problem? Or is there really a
problem?
( The teacher will read the situation,
there are also pictures being projected
in the screen.)
9. Today we will be talking about Breeding;
Breeds and Breeding Systems
(next lay down objectives)
The students will read each
objectives one by one.
Before we proceed to the lesson proper, let
us have a run down on the key terms that
we will meet in the discussion.
The vocabulary includes:
Carcass
F1
Feed efficiency
Heterosis
Homozygous
Hybrids
Hybrid vigor
Lean meat percentage
Litter
Litter size
Parental breeds
Progenies
Will read the terms one by one as
their names were called.
Kaye: Carcass is a dressed body of
animal ready for bucthery after
removal of skin, visceral organs,
head feet etc.
Bryan: F1 is a first filial generation
consist of all the offspring from the
parents.
Rainne: Heterosis is defined as the
increase in performance of the
offspring compared to the average
of parents.
And so on….
10. While flashing photos, the teacher will
ask the students about the breeds.
Can you name what breed is being
displayed on the screen?
Can someone describe to us the
characteristics of this specific breed?
Image 1
Very good.
Image 2
Nice try, but it is actually landrace
though this posses the same color but
landrace has long face.
Image 3
That's correct. Very good.
No Ma’am.
(Some may know the breed and try to
answer)
(Students will raise their hands and
share their observations)
"Ma'am based on my observation that is
duroc because of the color which is
red."
"Ma'am I think that is large white
because of the color?"
"Ma'am it is large white because of the
color and ear which is standing."
11. Image 4
Okay very good.
It seems that some of you were aware of
the different pig breeds. And thank you
for sharing your observations. As I can
see, you focused on the physical
characteristics of the animals presented
to you. Well that’s a good observation. To
add some more to your observations, this
morning/afternoon we will unveil more
of the characteristics of pigs in terms of
the different factors that is associated in
the 2nd discussion which is the Breeding
Systems.
“Ma'am that is a petrain
based on the black and white
color.""
12. The teacher will discuss about:
Introduction to Breeding
Breeds of Pigs: General
Characteristics, Distinct
Characteristics
There may be a lot of breeds which
you can find on the internet, those
are mostly product of
crossbreeding. But what we have in
the discussion are the common and
most recognized breeds among
others.
After the discussion the teacher
will ask the students (so they would
recall what have been stated)
about:
•What are the different breeds?
The students will read what is
flashed on the screen and share
their opinion.
The students will give some
examples.
The students will share the swine
breeds they already see in actual.
The students will share what they
think are the swine breeds sold in
the market (butchered or alive)
Landrace, Large White, Berkshire,
Hampshire, Duroc Jersey, Pietrain
13. •Can you describe their
characteristics?
•Can you compare them?
Landrace are meat type of breed with long
face, have good mothering ability, have weak
legs, and prolific.
Large white are meat type of breed, fertile,
have high quality of meat, and fast growers.
And so on…
“ Two most common sow line breeds
landrace and large white. Both have good
mothering ability but their appearance are
different. Landrace have long face and body
while Large White have dished faced and
shorter body.”
“Duroc and Pietrain are common boar line
breeds and both are meat type as well as
resistance to diseases. Duroc jersey have
good mothering ability while Pietrain are
not suited to become a sow.”
14. Impressive. You are all listening
attentively. The descriptions gave
you provided you the characteristics
of some swine breeds not only in
terms of their appearance but also
in terms of performance. So there is
an additional criteria for you to
consider in describing a breed . We
look not only to the physical
appearance but also to their
performance.
Do you have questions before we
proceed to the next?
None.
15. When done recalling and testing their
knowledge and attentiveness, the teacher
will proceed to the 2nd discussion.
As I've mentioned a while ago, breeds is
interconnected with our next discussion
which is the Breeding Systems
Animals need to reproduce to keep their
breeds intact, they need to multiply with
varying reasons. What do you think are
those? In Swine Production, pigs don’t
just simply reproduce and multiply.
There are reasons behind why and how
breeders/farm owners breed this specific
animal. We are done with the what part,
which is the breeds and now we will be
dealing with the why and how.
16. Let me introduce to you the different Breeding
Systems involve in Swine Production and see
how these systems affect the production cycle.
We will be discussing their characteristics
including its advantages and disadvantages.
And at the end of the discussion, you are going
to share your insights on the importance of
breeds as well as breeding systems in Swine
Production.
I’ll give you two questions to ponder on while
we take the discussion. First question, how are
breeds and breeding systems interconnected?
Second, what is the importance of these in
engaging in Swine Production?
17. Let them recall the different breeding
systems discussed.)
Very good.
Very good.
What about Crossbreeding?
"Teacher an example of inbreeding is
when the sow and the boar are related
for example siblings or in family line."
"Ma'am in pure breeding if P1 is
Landrace P2 must be Landrace also.
They should be both 100% pure breed."
"Crossbreeding is mating between
different breeds for example Landrace
X Large White or P1 is ½ Large White,
½ Landrace and P2 is ½ Duroc and ½
Landrace. So their offspring is ½
Landrace, ¼ Duroc and ¼ Large
White.”
18. The teacher will discuss the different
Breeding Systems
Inbreeding
Purebreeding
Crossbreeding
Upgrading
(During the discussion the teacher will
ask the students to give examples of the
mentioned breeding systems.
Students will listen and answer if asked.
Student will read each breeding system.
Students will ask questions.
“Ma’am, why do farmers still choose
inbreeding if there are a lot of
disadvantages?”
“ Ma’am is purebreeding costly?”
“ Ma’am what breed is better to
crossbreed?”
“ Ma’am is it always native pig used in
upgrading?”
Students will give examples.
19. That's nice you've given a very nice
example.
Who can tell me what is upgrading?
Excellent. Class I'm happy to know
that you are paying attention to our
discussion.
It seems that most of you
understand the flow of the different
breeding systems.
“
Upgrading is crossing of breeds with
specific purpose like for example
Landrace and Duroc and Large
White this three possess different
characteristics such as Landrace are
good mothers but weak legs but
Duroc has strong legs and resistant
to stress and Large White are Fertile
and fast growers so if we want to
produce a breeders upgrading is
highly recommended."
20. But I want to give emphasis on this
one. This is how you will make a
criteria in choosing the breeds and
breeding system.
It has been discussed that
preferably and the most common
sow line is Landrace and Large
White.
Now if you are really listening what
would you like to pair with this
breeds if you would like to have a
good quality of meat?
“ Ma’am for me, I will crossbreed it
to Pietrain,. Because the
characteristics of Pietrain is really
for meat purposes.”
“Ma’am I think I will still choose the
same breed. Pure breeding of
Landrace Ma’am. Since it is also a
meat type of breed. And good
management is also a key in raising
a good meat.”
21. Impressive., you are really proving
that you were able to acquire
something from this day’s
discussion.
Another question. I can choose
whatever breed I want to pair, what
if I’d like to have a Duroc and
Pietrain. The question is, what
breed should be the boar?
Very good. What breeding system
is employed?
What is the purpose in choosing
these breeds?
“ Ma’am it should be the Pietrain,
because Duroc Jersey have a good
mothering ability compare to
Pietrain.”
“ Crossbreeding” everyone answers.
“For meat purposes.” everyone
answers.
22. I am happy to know everyone of you
is getting the point of this lesson.
Always remember that you should
have set first the purpose of
breeding before looking to the
different breeds. Then look for a
trusted breeder where you can buy
your stocks. Always remember the
characteristics of these breed before
choosing to manage them.
I think you are all ready to have your
own criteria in pairing what breeds
and in choosing what breeding
system is appropriate for your
chosen enterprise. Very good class.
23. Let us now sum up what we have
discussed about breeding systems.
Who would like to sum it up?
Very good, thank you for sharing,
who else?
Again, the four breeding systems
are…(the students will enumerate
the four)
(The teacher will ask random
question using the description of
the system)
Before I conclude the lesson let’s get
back to the previous questions I
have told you to ponder on.
“ Inbreeding- breeding of closely
related animals
Purebreeding- animals of the same
breed are mated to each other”
“ Crossbreeding- breeding of two
different animals from different
breeds
Upgrading- inferior breed is
improved by continued crossing”
The students will answer.
The students will eagerly answer.
24. In your opinion or base from what
we have discussed, how are breeds
and breeding systems
interconnected?
Okay. Very good. Any other
answer? If none how about…
What is the importance of these in
engaging in Swine Production?
Any other?
“ they are interconnected in the
sense that the purpose of breeding
is met when the appropriate breeds
are selected properly and use the
ideal breeding system for this
purpose.”
“None”
“ swine production takes a lot of
process and choosing the right
breed for the right purpose is one.”
Knowing the different breeds and
what breeding system will help in
getting the desired traits resulted
from the pairing of the chosen
breeds.

26. C. ENHANCEMENT ACTIVITIES
Group Activity
Materials Needed: Manila paper
and Pentel Pen
The class will be divided into two.
each group will be assigned a
specific breeding system.
Instructions:
Choose the breeds that you are
going to use for the assigned
Breeding System. Make an
illustration for you choices. State
also your purpose and reason for
choosing these breeds.
Be ready to present your group
output in class.
The students will group themselves
and form a circle to do their task.
27. D. GENERALIZATION
It seems that most of you
understand
the flow of the different
breeding systems.
Now I want to hear from you,
who can
sum up what we have discussed
about breeding
systems?
Very good.
Who wants to add to what
Ms.___ said
"Ma'am pig/swine breeds through
physical characteristics such as
color, color combination, size and
position of ears such as hanging or
standing and through genetic
potential. As for breeding we have
inbreeding, purebreeding,
crossbreeding and upgrading.
28. Very good, thank you for sharing.
"Ma'am as she mentioned earlier
there are four breeding system we
have discussed when we say
inbreeding is breeding of related
animals within a family.
Purebreeding is the same breed
both are pure breeds not an
offspring of crossbreeding.
Crossbreeding involves mating of
animal between different breeds
and upgrading is crossing of breeds
with a specific purpose."
29. As mentioned earlier, there is no
perfect breed. There are factors that
constitute to the better outcome of
engaging in swine production.
There may be a lot of breeds which
you can choose from, what’s
important is that you know it’s
characteristics. By knowing these
breed's characteristics you can
simply decide on what breed you
will opt to. Breeding systems help
in determining the future progenies
of the paternal breeds.
(
(Students are listening.)
30. These two are interconnected in a
sense that, you know what specific
breed you want for a specific
purpose by knowing it’s
characteristics, then you choose on
what breeding system best fit your
choice of breed. This is a matter of
good judgement and management.
No one, in the industry or any
undertaking wants to fail. So it is
important that you know these
preliminary information that will
guide you to your journey once you
decided to be part of the Swine
Industry.
31. E. Valuing
We have discussed different pig
breeds and breeding system and
we have learned their importance
in swine production management.
I want you to get one whole sheet
of paper and write your reflection
about the importance of learning
breeds and breeding system
imagining that you are already
engaged in the production cycle of
swine.
The students will get a paper and a
ballpen and write their own
reflection.
32. IV. ASSESSMENT
Using the discussed breeding systems, put specific
breeds on each systems and discuss the characteristics
of their offsprings. Do this up to the second generation
using the parental breeds.
33. V. AGREEMENT
Identify atleast five pig farms in the country. List down
what specific breeds and breeding systems they are
using. Look for possible reasons why they chose it. It
may be from the article you’ve read or for backyard
farms that are within the locality which you included
base it from their answers. After gathering the data,
make your own generalization.
