This is particularly important in Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud environments. This presentation analyzes aspects of the Amazon EC2 IaaS cloud environment that differ from a traditional datacenter and introduces general best practices for ensuring data privacy, storage persistence, and reliable DBMS backup. Best practices for application robustness and scalability on demand are reviewed and are especially significant in leveraging the full potential of an IaaS cloud. The need for a cloud application management and configuration system is briefly reviewed and two alternate approaches to cloud application management are described (RightScale and Kaavo).

Public clouds platforms are rapidly growing and many businesses move partially or fully their IT infrastructure to the cloud. The big players like Microsoft, Google, Oracle and Amazon operate their own public cloud platforms while the smaller players provide cloud services and PaaS platforms and on top of the larger. What about the .NET developers and the cloud? In this talk the speaker Svetlin Nakov introduces the public .NET clouds and compares the leading .NET PaaS clouds: Windows Azure, AppHarbor, Uhuru and AWS Elastic Beanstalk for .NET. The .NET public clouds are compared in terms of architecture, programming model, pricing, development stack, available services, deployment model and tools for administration and monitoring. A live demo shows how to deploy and run a typical .NET application (based on ASP.NET MVC and MS SQL Server) in AppHarbor and Uhuru. In this talk the speaker will compare the most widely used public PaaS clouds (Azure, GAE and AWS) from the software developer’s perspective. A parallel between Azure, GAE, AWS and few other clouds (like AppHarbor, Heroku, Cloudfoundry and AppForce) will be made based on several criteria: architecture, pricing, storage services (non-relational databases, relational databases in the cloud and blob/file storage), business-tier services (like queues, notifications, email, CDN, etc.), supported languages, platforms and frameworks and front-end technologies. A live demo will be made to compare the way we build and deploy a multi-tiered application in Azure, Amazon and GAE and how to implement its back-end (using a cloud database), business tier (based on REST services) and front-end (based on HTML5). We will explore the strengths and limitations of Hadoop for analyzing large data sets and review the growing ecosystem of tools for augmenting, extending, or replacing Hadoop MapReduce. We will introduce the Amazon Elastic MapReduce (EMR) platform as the big data foundation for Hadoop and beyond by providing specific examples of running Machine Learning (Mahout), Graph Analytics (Giraph), and Statistical Analysis (R) on EMR. We will discuss also big data analytics and visualization of results with Amazon Redshift + third party business intelligence tools, as well as typical end-to-end Big Data workflow on AWS. We will conclude with real-world examples from ICAO of Big Data analytics for aviation safety data on AWS. The integrated Safety Trend Analysis and Reporting System (iSTARS) is a web based system linking a collection of safety datasets and related web application to perform online safety and risk analysis. It uses AWS EC2, S3, EMR and related partner tools for continuous data aggregation and filtering.

Deciding the optimal cloud vendor or platform for your requirements is a complex task.
