E-Dashboard
 E-Dashboards are specifically designed to
focus on key elements/measures of the
business and reduce complexity.
 Dashboards provide a first line of sight on
critical business challenges and risks.
 However, for in-depth investigation and
insights, an E-Dashboard is inadequate.
 E-Dahsboarding could be easily accomplished
using various solutions: SAS, Sharepoint,
Filemaker, Tableau, SpotFire, etc.
C-Level and Executive Dashboards are designed to be simplistic and providing first find, first
shot capability to Critical measures about the business.

Analytics
 Further statistical and mathematical
investigations can be taken after an issue is
found on E-Dashboard to provide insights that
aid in the inferential, predictive and
prescriptive aspects of BPM.
 Other adhoc performance and strategic
investigations can be done using stand-alone
analytics tools.
 Desktop business analytics applications like
IBM SPSS Statistics, and SAS JMP can be
essential to provide this capability.
E-dashboard is important, but a parallel Analytics capability is essential to augment the
limitations of the dashboard.

 As best practice, data integrity is important at
the source. So it is important to clean the data
first before connecting them to analytics
engines.
 Most dashboaridng solutions and visual
analytics have common capability to import or
do live connections to Excel sheet data.
 The first thing we need to do is to clean the
data and produce a simple Excel Data List
which we need to connect later on to analytics
tools may it be cloud based like Tableau or
stand alone anaytics like SPSS.
Sales data in Excel Sheet has been downloaded from the Internet and used as a case for
creating a Sales Dashboard. We will be using Tableau visual analytics tool to create the
Dashboard.
Strategic Planning and Business development
1. Import the Sample Superstore data to Tableau. Here we are using the more limited & free
Tableau Public.
2. The next step is to build the individual components of the Dashboard called Worksheets.
In this case, we would like to see sales and profit data by Geography and by Category.
3. Then we arrange the component Worksheets into a consolidated Dashboard. This would
autoupdate changes in the excel file or if this has live connection with Data base server, it would
also update live any data changes. (Click this Link to view actual Tableau Dashboard)
 Glaring
discrepancy in
2012 data.
 Sharp decline in
sales and profit
in Central and
Western regions
 Increase in sales
but negative
profits in
Southern Region
Observations:
3. Doing a drill down analysis of the Sales figures on Southern Region reveal drastic increase in
Sales from $232.42 to $42,614.83 from 2011 to 2012. The only problem with that is that sales
have been made at a loss.
Recommended Action:
1. Change Pricing Strategy/Policy
2. Change Manager
4. Drilling into the steep dive in sales and profit for Central Region from 2011 to 2012 makes us
suspect a Segmentation Strategy issue.
Recommended Action:
1. Change Pricing Strategy/Policy
2. Change Manager
5. Suspecting a Segmention issue for 2012, we went ahead to create another worksheet to
show sales and profit by segment.
 Sales and profit were
driven by high Corporate
sales for 2011.
 The focus on driving
Home Office sales in 2012
caused increase sales but
mostly were sold at highly
discounted prices hitting
on margins (negative).
Recommended Action:
1. Review Segmention strategy
with focus on driving high-margin
Corporate sales.
2. Review Home Office pricing
strategy.
3. Include segmentation data on
Dashboard.
5. Adjusted Dashboard including Segmentation sales and profit data.

Integration of data
Among the challenging aspects of building E-Dashboard and visualization is how data is
integrated from various sources, including the periodic updating.
 Map out all relevant data to be periodically
collected and assign accountable persons
to report.
 Tie up reporting performance to personal
and departmental performance evaluation.
 Filemaker could be a good
integration platform to automate
collection of data from relevant
sources with user-specific log-in and
credentials
