An update on academic library take-up of Web 2.0 and how this affects our conception and delivery of information literacy. Presented at "Web 2.0 untangled : reaching our users with new technologies" at Wolfson College, Oxford, 24 Nov.2010.
Young people are connecting with one another through technology in unprecedented ways. Computers, wi-fi networks, and smart phones allow young people 24/7 access to technology and to one another. Using smart devices in educational settings as learning and community building tools can promote interpersonal communication and encourage young people to positively express their individuality and build their student-to-student, student-to-educator relationships. The activities that will be presented and experienced during this workshop use the technology that young people use - cell phones, social networking sites, laptops, blogs, and digital cameras. These activities focus upon and build diversity and cultural sensitivity, teamwork and problem solving, self-reflection and self-exploration, and communication and self-expression (adapted from Wolfe & Sparkman, 2009).

The presentation was first held on April 21st, 2015 at Usability-Stammtisch Berlin (works best with audio, though). Oh, and the book is highly recommended – buy her book!

Houses are normally fairly stationary objects, and that's not considered a bad thing. But innovation never stands still, and a new prototype house that can walk on six legs has been built . The house is ten feet high, powered by solar panels, and is outfitted with a kitchen, toilet, bed, and wood stove. Last week, the house, a collaboration between MIT and the Danish design collective N55, took a journey through Cambridgeshire in England as part of an art project at the Wysing Art Center. Designed to move at the muscle speed of a human, the house walked at about five kilometers an hour around the 11-acre campus.
Designing and deploying mobile user studies in the wild: a practical guideKaren Church
This tutorial was presented as part of Mobile HCI 2012 in San Francisco on the 19th September 2012. The tutorial aims to provide a practical guide to conduct mobile field studies based on the learning outcomes of the research I've been involved in while working as a Research Scientist in Telefonica Research, Barcelona. I cover how to design effective mobile field studies, the importance of mobile prototyping, the impact of various design choices on the study setup and deployment, how to engage participants and how to avoid ethical and legal issues. I've also tried to include listings of useful resources for those who are interested in conducting mobile field studies of their own.

Using iPads to support students struggling with literacy requirements of schoolSpectronics
This presentation will provide an opportunity for us to explore strategies and support tools proven to be effective in supporting students who are struggling with the literacy requirements in primary and secondary schools. In particular, addressing the needs of students who are struggling to keep up with the reading, writing or organisational tasks required of them. These students may be struggling because of learning difficulties/disabilities. Alternatively, they could be one of the growing numbers of ESL (English as a Second Language) students in our schools.
While the need for effective remediation is paramount for all students struggling with literacy, this workshop will be focused on using the iPad as a compensatory tool for students. While at the same time as being providing with effective literacy instruction, students also need to be getting on with the business of ‘reading to earn’ - accessing the curriculum and learning content across all their subject areas, and being engaged in meaningful communication and assessment of what they have learnt. Compensatory tools are essential in the provision of accommodations and adjustments for all students, and this will be the focus for this presentation.

In this webinar, Dr. Debora Katz, author of the new calculus-based physics text, Physics for Scientists and Engineers: Foundations and Connections, will discuss how flipping her classroom has shifted the focus from her teaching to her students' learning.

Editor's Notes
2 years ago our students were mainly texting, listening to music, emailing and on facebook with their phones- now they are venturing out a bit and using the phone to call people, take their pictures and set alarms-the bad news is texting has also increased. I show a slight increase in the use of weather apps… probably wondering when they are going to have a snow day!
