Bowel Preparation for
Colonoscopy or Surgery
Did You Know?
Colon cancer is the second-leading
cause of cancer in the United States.
Having a colonoscopy is essential to
screen for colon cancer.
What Can I Do to Prepare
for a Colonoscopy?
If you’ve scheduled a colonoscopy, your
doctor will provide you with instructions
on what to do in the days leading up to the
procedure. Take time to review it as there
may be information that pertains specifically
to your situation due to your medical history.
Three Days Before
Three days before the procedure, you must avoid eating high-
fiber foods and artificially dyed foods and beverages. You will
also need to plan to have a family member or friend who can
pick you up from your procedure.
Two Days Before
Two days before the
colonoscopy, you will need to
continue to comply with the
dietary restrictions. It is also
a good idea to plan to work
from home so you can relax in
preparation for the procedure.
The Day Before
The day before your procedure:
• Do not eat solid foods
• Stay hydrated, only consuming
clear liquids
• Follow your physician’s
directions for the prescription
• Stay close to the bathroom
