Bonfire Night
Remember remember the fifth of November
        Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
           Should ever be forgot...
After Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603, James I
became king. English Catholics hoped he would
be nicer to them than Queen Elizabeth, but he
                   wasn’t.
A group of 13 men decided a violent action was
needed. They decided to blow up the houses of
                 parliament.
To carry out their plan, the conspirators got hold
of 36 barrels of gunpowder - and stored them in
a cellar, just under the House of Lords.
According to the story, an anonymous letter was
received by the king, warning him about the
                  gunpowder.
On November 5th, 1605, Guy Fawkes was in the
cellar when the guards went looking for the
gunpowder. He was arrested and executed.
Nowadays, we celebrate the night this
happened. Every year, on the 5th of November,
people light bonfires and fireworks or play with
                   sparklers.
It is common to make a man from pieces of
newspaper and old clothes. He was known as a
'guy'. People would then put the 'guy' on the
                   bonfire.
