Bonfire Night commemorates the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when a group of 13 Catholic conspirators plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London. Guy Fawkes was found in the cellar under the House of Lords guarding 36 barrels of gunpowder, intending to kill King James I. Now every November 5th, bonfires are lit and fireworks set off in Britain to celebrate Guy Fawkes' failed assassination attempt. People often burn effigies of Guy Fawkes on the bonfires.
