- 3. After Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603, James I
became king. English Catholics hoped he would
be nicer to them than Queen Elizabeth, but he
wasn’t.
- 4. A group of 13 men decided a violent action was
needed. They decided to blow up the houses of
parliament.
- 5. To carry out their plan, the conspirators got hold
of 36 barrels of gunpowder - and stored them in
a cellar, just under the House of Lords.
- 6. According to the story, an anonymous letter was
received by the king, warning him about the
gunpowder.
- 7. On November 5th, 1605, Guy Fawkes was in the
cellar when the guards went looking for the
gunpowder. He was arrested and executed.
- 8. Nowadays, we celebrate the night this
happened. Every year, on the 5th of November,
people light bonfires and fireworks or play with
sparklers.
- 9. It is common to make a man from pieces of
newspaper and old clothes. He was known as a
'guy'. People would then put the 'guy' on the
bonfire.
