Salsa combines a common Latin type of music derived from Cuba and original Puerto Rican style music. Once modernized, the world known dance and
music style received the label "Salsa." Reggaeton
Reggaeton is one of the largest musical exports known to Puerto Rico throughout the 1980's. Reggaeton receives it's name from it's basic genre type,
being essentially Spanish sung Reggea. This music genres origins lie mainly with and artist native to Panama known as El General and Puerto Rican
native Vico C. In the late 20th century the genre set itself in stone as a solid Puerto Rican genre through several songs that grew in popularity among
the population.
Bomba
Despite usually being grouped in with the genre "Plena", Bomba itself can also be seen as it's own separate music and dance style. Record indicates
that Bomba first arrived on the island due to the import of African slaves. It's popularity grew exponentially and by the later 1900's became a media
icon.

First of all, I would develop relationships with the staff from my school. Being able to have one on one connections with them would allow me to
have a close bond, and in the future they would be able to write recommendation letters for me. Also, I would be able to increase my social skills
by bonding with classmates, staff, and especially the Puerto Ricans. Interacting with these people would help me in my field of study. Being part of
the dental hygiene program, I would need to know about people's backgrounds, and I have to know how to relate to my patients. This trip would
allow me to gain national experience by flying overseas rather than by car. It would also be the first step to one day being able to fly internationally.
Being in Puerto Rico, I hope to learn a lot about the culture, specifically because it is a Latin culture. Being Mexican, I would love to see the
similarities and differences between the cultures.

My Final Culture Project : Puerto Rico
For my final culture project, I decided to take a trip to the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States,
therefore, passports are not needed when traveling to and from the island. It is located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea and sits east of the Dominican
Republic and West if the U.S. Virgin Islands. Spanish is the primary language inPuerto Rico, however, most Puerto Ricans almost speak English.
These two languages are both official languages of Puerto Rico. In fact, Puerto Rico actually translates into Rich Port in English and has a
population of 3,674,209. It is also home to one of the longest zip lines in the world, La Bestia. It allows the rider to soar in the air over 4,745 feet of
terrain. The 2.5km cable also enables the rider to reach a speed up to 93.20 miles per hour. Therefore, I chose Puerto Rico to embark on a new exciting
adventure. According to Delta Airlines, the airfare from Charlotte Douglas International Airport to Luis Munoz International Airport, round trip, will
cost approximately $1,232. This includes first class seating, premium entertainment, personalized service, primary check–in, and premium food &
drink. I will leave for departure on Oct. 9th 2017 and return on Oct. 15th 2017. I chose a six–day trip to visit tourists sites, enjoys the beaches, and

Bomba is a kind of music that originated with the slaves that were brought to Puerto Rico.
Bomba was played on big barrels that were found on the plantations, and any other thing that could be beat upon to keep a beat. In fact the word
bomba means "drum". The people would take goatskin and stretch it over the mouth of the barrel. Some even added nails and screws to be able to tune
them like today's modern drums.
"Supplemented by other percussion instruments, the bomba was generally polyrhythmic and featured a complex interaction between drummers and
dancers. It was characterized by an African– derived call–and–response vocal style, in which a lead singer was answered by a chorus singing in unison"
(Glasser, 19).
Slaveholders actually outlawed these drums at one point because they were a way of communication for the slaves. These "talking–drums" could be
heard from miles around, so the slaves were forced to hide these instruments or to develop new ones.
One can see why the elite of the island did not see Bomba as a typical Puerto Rican music. It originated from Africa and no one wants to be associated
with them. But this is clearly racism and classicism at work here, for upon hearing this type of music you can not do anything but feel the powerful
beat. You get into the call–and–response interaction, because not too many types of music have interaction between the musicians and the audience.

There are many celebrations that both countries celebrate such as Christmas and Easter. One can find many similarities and differences within the
countries of Spain and Puerto Rico. Two other aspects of the Spanish and Puerto Rican culture are their governments and food. Spain and Puerto Rico
