 Hedwis Lewis describes Body Language as the “
Communication of personal feelings, emotions, attitudes, and
thoughts through body movements-gestures, postures,
positions, and distance, either consciously or involuntarily,
more often sub-consciously, and accompanied or
unaccompanied by the spoken language”.
 Macro and Micro expressions
 Can be used in addition to or independent of
words
 Reveals the truth
 Significant uses in interpersonal and group
interaction
 Significant in the realms of business, media
and others.
 Magazines carry endless stories of body
language of latest celebrities
 One FBI agent has analyzed Madonna’s
eyelids flutters to see if she was lying on NBC
Television ( An Example).
 Is the person you’re talking to holding their head up high in confidence?
 Or are their shoulders slightly hunched, indicating that they might be feeling
insecure or uncomfortable?
 Are they walking in a way which might indicate their feeling indecisive?
 When gathered in a crowded room, who are strutting about with their chest
puffed out, making it known they’ve got confidence and perhaps a big ego to
accompany that?
 What about the person that’s trying to hide away in the corner hoping to blend
in or that no one would notice them?
 You can make an impression in less than
seven seconds
 Adjust your attitude
 Have open body language
 Smile and make eye contact
 Lean in slightly and watch your posture
 Speak with your hands too
 Sweaty palms- Nervous and overactive
 Dead fish- Low self-esteem
 Brush off- Quick grasp and rough ( My
agenda is important than yours)
 The two handed – Usually among politicians (
warmness, friendly, trustworthy)
 Finger vice-Keep you at distance
 Bone crusher
 Lobster claw
 The top-handed
 The pusher
 Renders a sense of analysis and
interpretation regarding the intentions,
attitude.
 Managing our own body language enables us
to have maximum effects in work situations,
being interviewed for a job, promotion,
everyday dealing with colleagues.
