Saudi Arabia's Health Ministry has instructed public hospitals and health facilities to not allow celebrations of religious or personal birthdays on their premises. This was based on a religious order from Dar Al-Ifta, a government body that represents Islam, as some Muslims commented that celebrating birthdays innovates religious practices not part of Islam since the Prophet Muhammad did not celebrate his birthday. However, before these debates, Arabs traditionally celebrated their birthdays with parties, though there are no specific traditional birthday customs in Saudi Arabia. Celebrations for children tend to be grand occasions.
