Bionics is an interdisciplinary science that studies organisms and builds technical devices modeled after biology. Examples include boat hulls like dolphin skin, sonar like bats, and computer components like neurons. Bionics is also used widely in medicine with devices that mimic organ and body part functions, such as cochlear implants for the deaf. Since WWII, research has focused on prosthetics that join with the human body without rejection, resulting in more advanced artificial limbs that move and perform tasks almost as well as real arms and feet.
