Meaning Loss of biodiversity Conservation of biodiversity Content
Biodiversity is the great variety of species that exist on the earth Meaning:
All the species are interdependent on each other Why is biodiversity important?
Loss of a single species can begin a chain reaction of destruction
Contributes to 8% of total number of Species i.e 1.75 million (as per Global Biodiversity Assesment of UNEP-1995) Status of Biodiversity in India
Reasons for loss of biodiversity
Main reason for loss of biodiversity 1. Population explosion
Single crop method of farming
Most critical threat to marine biodiversity 2.Habitat destruction
Oil pollution (Exxon Valder accident in Alaska) 3.Pollution
Dumping of garbage at sea
4.Global warming
Potent threat to biodiversity Endemic species not able to survive 5.Exotic species
One – eight of plant species are threatened with extinction 1,40,000 species are lost every year Up to 2030, 50% of Earth’s species are estimated to become extinct Effect of loss of biodiversity
1.Creating National Parks and Sanctuaries Sunderban national park Bird sanctuary Conservation of biodiversity
2.Declaring some areas as biodiversity zones
3.Undertaking certain projects to nurture specific species
1.What is the meaning of biodiversity? Ans: The great variety of species that exist in the earth. 2.Why is it important? Ans: All species are interdependent on each other and a loss of single species can begin a chain reaction of destruction Evaluation
3.What are the reasons for loss of biodiversity? Ans: Population explosion, habitat destruction, global warming etc. 4.How has global warming affected biodiversity? Ans: Global warming has resulted in climate change at such a fast pace that it has become impossible for species to adapt to it.
5.What are the measures taken to conserve biodiversity? Ans: Creating National Parks and Sanctuaries, declaring some areas as Reserved Biodiversity Zones etc. 6.Why is biodiversity conservation “need of the hour”? Ans: So many plants and animals are headed towards extinction. To maintain the ecological balance every species is equally important.
