LEVELS OF BIODIVERSITY
1.Eastern Himalayas
• Comprises Nepal,Bhutan and neighbouring states of north india
• CLIMATE : chilly, min. -42 degree C ;max. 20 degree C ;rainfall 500mm.
FLORA :10,000 species ;3,160 are endemic
VERTEBRATES:
BIRDS :980 birds,15 are endemic ,2 Endemic Bird Areas (EBA)
Eg. Himalayan monal ,Himalayan Bulbul,Chukar Partridge
MAMMALS :300 mammals,3 are endemic
Eg.Langurs,Snow leopard, Himalaya Brown bear
REPTILES: 175 reptiles,50 are endemic
AMPHIBIANS : 105 amphibians, > 40 are endemic
many are frogs and toads
• HUMAN IMPACT :
* Increase in population
* Agriculture
*Hunting
*Over exploration
*Poaching
*Urbanisation
* Pollution
* Poorly managed tourism
MEASURES FOR CONSERVATION
• About 1,13,000 square km is under protection
# wild life sanctuaries
#National parks -
Manas National park
Kaziranga National park
Corbett National park
2.WESTERN GHATS
• Chain of hills,run parallel to west coast.
• They are also known as SAHAYADRI MOUNTAINS.
• Gujarath,Maharashtra,Goa,Karnataka,Tamil Nadu,Kerala.
• Covers 60,000 square km.
• They receive highest rain fall.
Human impact
• Increase in population
• Agriculture
• Hunting
• Deforestation
• Poorly managed tourism
• Urbanisation
• Fuel wood
• Forest fires
Measures for conservation
# 15% of Western Ghats is protected .
# In 20 National parks and Sanctuaries.
# Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs).
# 126 KBAs have been identified.
#ONEBUCKETCHALLENGE
•1×30 = 30 buckets ------30×15=450L(1month)
•450×12=5,400 litres per year
