Designing for multiple devices - GA London, 14 Jan 2013Anna Dahlström
Slides from my class on January 14 at General Assembly in London about designing for multiple devices.
ABSTRACT
The rise in mobiles and tablets have changed the way we consume and interact with content, but also the way we design and what we base our design approach on. This class will teach you about the shift in user expectations, behaviour- and consumption patterns and what that means for designing products that will be used on multiple devices. Coming out of it you'll be equipped with guiding principles and tools to tackle the multiple device jungle.

The time is 2020. The inflection point has long passed. Most web traffic is now coming from some manner of portable device. And if Google Chairman Eric Schmidt (and many others’) predictions have come true, we will have truly reached time where “…[technology] will just be seamless. It will just be there. The web will be everything, and it will be nothing. It will be like electricity.”
This presentation challenges us to think about the role of the web going forward. What steps must we take to build a world where interactions with the web are truly “seamless”? What would a seamless web even look like? How can we ensure the web remains strong amidst all the new technologies that are on the way.
Presented on September 13 in London at Generate.

Presentation for TCEA 2015: “75-90% of learning in a classroom is visual. Improve visual literacy by utilizing online resources and incorporating photography into instruction so that students can read images as information sources and understand how to analyze, produce, and ethically-share images.”
Semantics, Deep Learning, and the Transformation of BusinessSteve Omohundro
Deep learning is likely to have a big impact on business. McKinsey predicts that AI and robotics will create $50 trillion of value over the next 10 years. Over $1 billion of venture investment has gone to 250 deep learning startups over the past year. Deep learning systems have recently broken records in speech recognition, image recognition, image captioning, translation, drug discovery and other tasks. Why is this happening now and how is it likely to play out? We review the development of AI and the pendulum swings between the "neats" and the "scruffies". We describe traditional approaches to semantics through logics and grammars and the new deep learning vector semantics. We relate it to Roger Shepard's cognitive geometry and the structure of biological networks. We also describe limitations of deep learning for safety and regulation. We show how it fits into the rational agent framework and discuss what the next steps may be.
Why the social web is here to stay (and what to do about it)Mike Ellis
The social web (was "Web2.0"...) calls to human experience and emotion in a way which transcends the hype often associated with it. While the phrase "Web2.0" does a good job of associating certain services and approaches together, it also has a down-side, suggesting that any day now, a "Web3.0" will be along to replace this transient, fickle technology with something new.
This talk argues that the "social web" has a momentum which should be taken seriously -- more seriously than "just mere hype", particularly by content-rich organisations such as those involved with cultural content. It also examines some of the issues -- particularly around the perceived challenges to authority and "value" of cultural institutions and assets -- and asks how these can be overcome.
Gary Gale, Yahoo! Geo Technologies gave a fantastic presentation at the Telematics Update Telematics Munich 2009 Conference & Exhibition.
This presentation was so well received by our automotive, web and mobile industry audience, that it had to be shared.
This presentation looks at "web2" in the context of human experience, suggesting that the social web as extension of "real life" means that it transcends the marketing-biased, "numbered web" hype that has typically surrounded it.
The slides focus particularly on the use of "social web" tools in the enterprise.
I will present these slides at Online Information 4th December 2008. See http://www.online-information.co.uk/online08/seminar_description_ims.html?presentation_id=442 for more information
Connecting beyond content - The Impact of the Digital on Higher EdDave Cormier
This talk by Dave Cormier and Bonnie Stewart for the T3 conference at St. Norbert College, explores the ways in which digital technologies open up that “how” of teaching and learning to enable new structures and forms for communications. Digital tools, concepts, and practices open up the walls of classrooms and of scholarship, and thus have far more significant - and hopeful, if complex - implications for academia than content-based debates allow us to grapple with. This presentation will outline ways in which digital networks fundamentally challenge traditional narratives surrounding higher education, and frame possibilities that arise when we think of education in terms of connection rather than content. It will examine what it means to succeed as learners, scholars, and institutions in a time of knowledge abundance, and open up ideas for ways forward.

A lot of talk about the future of the internet sounds almost hippie-spiritual or faux-philosophical. The Internet is not the same as the world-wide-web. But the Internet-of-Things and the Semantic Web - all parts of Web 3.0, are beginning to be very important to our learning environments. Here is a summary of key features, ranging from access, creativity, and information architecture.

Aesthetic Exploration and the SEEKING system - What is the impact of aestheti...Jeanna Leaves
A presentation investigating Panksepp's SEEKING system and its implications for aesthetic exploration.
How does aesthetic exploration contribute to new insights?
What are the underlying affective/emotional mechanisms for aesthetic experience and for insight?
What connections are there between aesthetic experience/creation and SEEKING (arousal/desire/appetite/eagerness)?
Are there personality types that are more prone to aesthetic exploration? Is there a model of “the artist”, “the designer”?
What is the affective predisposition for insight? What is the affective predisposition for aesthetic work? Are there overlaps?
Is aesthetic exploration a result of a homeostatic imbalance?
What is the epistemological surplus and value of aesthetics?

Hadj Ounis's most notable work is his sculpture titled "Metamorphosis." This piece showcases Ounis's mastery of form and texture, as he seamlessly combines metal and wood to create a dynamic and visually striking composition. The juxtaposition of the two materials creates a sense of tension and harmony, inviting viewers to contemplate the relationship between nature and industry.

“ Though we all spent hours each day scanning screens for information, what on the internet did we actually read ? ” [2] Ask the editors of Triple Canopy , whose (much repeated) mantra is to “ slow down the internet. ”
Bilder in Medien dienen oft der Dramatisierung
Bayrischer Rundfunk, Sommer 2005, Schweissflecken "entmenschlicte Kanzlerin"

Susan Sontag: “ In the form of a photograph the explosion of an A-bomb can be used to advertise a safe. ” For clarification, this is an advertising campaign being ran by Virgin Mobile in Australia. There have been sightings of these billboards containing photos from Flickr in both Melbourne (Victoria, Australia) and Adelaide (South Australia, Australia). There is a post in the FlickrCentral group about this photo - www.flickr.com/groups/central/discuss/72157600541608353/ The case vs. Creative Commons was dropped in November, 2007. The case against Virgin was dismissed for lack of jurisdiction in 2009.
Maerz 2009 auf Flickr, The use of social media led to identification of a photograph that had been on the Smithsonian “ Portraits of Scientists ” since 2003. The Smithsonian added the image to its photo-sharing Web site, . Flickr users began contributing clues, like a wedding announcement, to pinpoint the woman in the picture as 21-year-old Ida Elizabeth Sabin Goodwin, an artist hired in the 1920s at a science news service. Her granddaughter, Linda Sabin Eisenstadt, recognized the Flickr photo and contributed details of her grandmother ’ s life and some of her drawings — noting that she had found two unknown cousins as a result.
