When should you wear your helmet?
Every time you ride your bike!
But be sure to take it off when you are not riding your bike so it does not get caught and hurt you while you are playing

Everyone who rides a bike has a fall at least once.Even small falls can cause a serious injury.

What kind of helmet should your wear?
Pick one made specifically for bicyclingPick one that fits you snugly and is made for your agePick a white or bright color helmet to help drivers see you more clearlyLook inside the helmet for a CPSC sticker that means the Consumer Product Safety Commission says it is safeStay away from helmets with unusual shapes such as points and hard visors that could get caught in a fall, dark colors, thin straps,  and complicated fastenersRemember to get a new helmet if you fall and hit your head or your helmet becomes damaged in any way.
How should you properly wear your helmet?
It should sit level on the head without tilting forward or backward
A good bike helmet should have wide straps that fasten snugly under the chin
It should be tight enough that after fastening it won’t move around with sudden pulling or twisting

  • #14 Spread the plastic out on the floor. The floor should be tile or concrete, not carpeted. Gather the learners so all can see you and ask how the melon is like their head (i.e., round, hard outside and squishy inside). Drop the unprotected melon from shoulder height. If it does not break open, be sure to point out any "dent" or soft spot that the impact causes. Ask "What would happen if this melon were a person's head?" Ask "What would happen to the melon if protected by the bike helmet?" (Be sure to practice this demonstration before doing it for the class to be sure the bike helmet is secure enough to protect the melon. You may need to add foam inside the helmet to cushion it.) Drop the melon that is protected by the bike helmet. Ask "What does this tell you about the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet?"
