Bikers should always wear a helmet!
As doctors say, "we can fix arms and legs – we can't fix head and neck".
Bicycle helmets can protect your child by
reducing the risk of head injury by 85%
and reducing the risk of brain injury by 88%.
Wearing a bicycle helmet also prevents bicycle
related deaths in children by 75%.
Less than 20% of reported bicycle injuries involve collisions
with cars. Most occur in falls, or as a result of riders losing
control. A bad fall can result from a skid, catching a wheel
in a crack or even getting a shoelace caught in the chain.
In a spill, the forehead usually hits the ground first. Head
injuries cause most bicycle-related deaths and can result in
serious injury such as brain damage.
Preferably all bikers should wear a biker
helmet that protects them from head injuries.
Everyone riding a bike should wear a helmet.
Helmets are the most important protective
gear for bikers.
Helmets should fit appropriately and the straps
should be fastened.
A badly fitting helmet can cause serious harm.
A helmet should be worn squarely on top of
the head, covering the top of the forehead.
If it is tipped back, it will not protect the
forehead. The helmet fits well if it doesn't
move around on the head or slide down
over the wearer's eyes when pushed or
pulled. The chin strap should be adjusted to
fit snugly.
The essential part of the helmet for impact
protection is a thick layer of firm polystyrene,
plastic foam, that crushes on impact, absorbing
the force of the blow.
All helmets require a chin strap to keep them
in place in a crash.
A "CE" marking indicates that a
helmet fulfills the requirements of
the European Economic Community
(EEC) Directive (89/686/EEC) for
personal protection equipment.
A CE testing typically includes tests for:
shock absorption
penetration
retention systems (chin strap and buckle)
In general, a helmet that has been through a serious
fall or crash should be retired with gratitude. It has
served its purpose and may not provide adequate
protection in another crash. Impact crushes some of
the foam. The helmet is less protective although the
damage may not be readily visible.
If you are uncertain whether the helmet is still usable,
throw it away.
Playgrounds and bicycle helmets don’t mix
good!
Be sure to teach your children to remove their
helmets before using playground equipment or
climbing trees!
There are cases of young children suffering death or
severe brain damage as a result of hanging by the
straps of their bicycle helmets when they played on
playgrounds.
Thank You!
