Mentoring
An introduction to ”The Big Five”
+
Course objectives
When the seminar is over the participants will:
 understand what mentoring is
 be able to use the mentoring tools with a
mentee or friend who want to develop.
+
Expectations
I expect you to:
 try your best
 be open minded
 be actively participating
 be focusing on the task at hand
+
PART ONE
”The Big Five” Principles
+
Here are
two of the
tools
1.
Active
listening
2.
Effective
questions
+
1. Active listening
The chinese sign for
listening includes:
• Ears
• Heart
• Eyes
+
2. Effective questions
Closed questions Open questions
Will this action
plan work?
What impact will
this action plan
make?
Can you do
more?
How can you
improve the
results?
Leading questions Neutral questions
What is the
chance that this
task will
succeed?
What obstacles
may interfere with
this task?
Isn't it better to
put these tasks
on hold for the
time being?
What are the
arguments to
proceed with the
project?
+
Exercise
• Groups of two
• One will listen, the other talk
• Rules: Use the two tools that you
have learned so far!
• Time: 2 minutes each
Topics
Any, or:
• most memorable meeting
• Best/worse job
• Best/worse travel experience
• My most embarrassing moment
+
3. Feedback
The important thing to know when you give feedback is that the
mentee have to evolve. And it should give the mentee positive
change through increased drive.
Be careful when you give feedback and think about your body
language and how you use your voice.
+
4. Accountability
The best plans are those who get us to act, they will get us to be
conscious at the target and engaged.
Accountability is important to get the mentee to "take action", and
something that will be done toward the end of the conversation.
+
5. Recognition
The recognition must be spontaneous, real and characterized by
the emotion you where having in the whole conversation.
Give more if the effect is weaker than wanted. Stop in time.
Say: «I believe in you»!!!
+
PART TWO
