In this presentation I am going to share with you my observations, experience and thoughts.
I will be glad if this is useful for you and you find interesting tips.
It’s OK, if you have another point of you on some items. We are different, it’s a normal case.

ASSOCIATIONS:

WHEN MANAGER IS SO MUCH MANAGER
• Too busy
− needs to have open laptop
− answer immediately some urgent messages
− busy view
− monolog how poor manager does not have time to do own
tasks, but for YOU he/she does found time for a meeting
• Too bossy
• Too manipulative
• Afraid to have stronger team
member, than he/she is
“Here can be just a one star
and that’s me”
WHAT IS WRONG WITH SMALL TALK?
1. Do not make 1t1 as an one long small talk
2. We are not in the theatre
- If you are not interesting in team member at all,
- If you do not talk about other subjects besides the work,
- If you do not have at least one time morning coffee together or lunch
Don’t you consider, it may be strange,
if 1 time per month you will pretend honest interest
about hurt questions of this person?
Example of small talk:
it was a small talk, are you sure i remember all my
small talks?

MEETING?
• Review what is going well and what does not
• Review what can be improved
• Review expectations
• Review personal development plan
• Review salary plan
WHAT IS THE IDEA?
Let’s have 1t1 meetings on regular basis
Preparation flow:
Each meeting should have agenda and follow-up
[1t1 meeting is no an exclusion]
• Let your invitee to know, what about do you plan to talk
• Any agreement is not valid, if there is not any tiny written mention
• You can set up Confluence page, excel table, whenever you want
• Each meeting should have action items and meeting minutes
• Follow agreed action items,
• do not wait till the next 1t1 meeting to tell
“ohh, sorry, I did not have time to work on your question”
1) Typical meeting
Regularity
1 time per 4-5 weeks – for Junior staff
1 time per 8 weeks – for Senior staff
Duration: 30min
2) Crisis flow meeting
Regularity: As regular, as needed. Typically 1 time per months
Duration: no longer than 1h. Better will be schedule Meeting part 2
3) Place
You can have a lot of morning coffee together, discuss issues / plans / etc.
But, if it is not named as 1t1, team member will tell to everyone “no, I do not have any 1t1 meetings”.

• Let your team member to talk more
• Try do not interrupt
• Be active listener, do not push with your vision of life
• Remember about technique 5Why -> find root cause
• Create, make plans, even high-level
• Find what is a driver for this person
• Find expectations of your team member
• Ask for a feedback
• Finish meeting with summary and agreed action items
• If there is nothing to talk and you complete discussion faster, than expected –
finish 1t1

WHAT ABOUT OWN 1T1?
There are two options:
• Your manager will facilitate a meeting
• Your manager will NOT facilitate a meeting
So, what to do?
• is there a need for a meeting?
• prepare questions
• use technique Q&A
• follow rules above: Agenda, Follow-up
Everyone wants to feel, that someone takes care on us.
But, on management level we pretend to be self-organized.
Let’s do not make things more complex, that it is.
Let’s try to avoid baby-sitting

  • 1. WHO WILL WIN THE BATTLE 1:1 OR 1T1 ? In this presentation I am going to share with you my observations, experience and thoughts. I will be glad if this is useful for you and you find interesting tips. It’s OK, if you have another point of you on some items. We are different, it’s a normal case.
  • 2. OVERVIEW • Let’s talk about 1:1 • What value do I see in 1t1 meeting • How to proceed with 1t1 with your team member • How to proceed with 1t1 with upper management • Psycho tips and tricks
  • 4. IF 1:1, THAN SCORE OF WHAT? ASSOCIATIONS: Competition feeling No trust Here should be a winner Pressure What is the final score?
  • 5. WHEN MANAGER IS SO MUCH MANAGER • Too busy − needs to have open laptop − answer immediately some urgent messages − busy view − monolog how poor manager does not have time to do own tasks, but for YOU he/she does found time for a meeting • Too bossy • Too manipulative • Afraid to have stronger team member, than he/she is “Here can be just a one star and that’s me”
  • 6. WHAT IS WRONG WITH SMALL TALK? 1. Do not make 1t1 as an one long small talk 2. We are not in the theatre - If you are not interesting in team member at all, - If you do not talk about other subjects besides the work, - If you do not have at least one time morning coffee together or lunch Don’t you consider, it may be strange, if 1 time per month you will pretend honest interest about hurt questions of this person? Example of small talk: it was a small talk, are you sure i remember all my small talks?

  • 8. WHAT DO WE EXPECT FROM 1T1 MEETING? • Review what is going well and what does not • Review what can be improved • Review expectations • Review personal development plan • Review salary plan
  • 9. WHAT IS THE IDEA? Let’s have 1t1 meetings on regular basis Preparation flow: Each meeting should have agenda and follow-up [1t1 meeting is no an exclusion] • Let your invitee to know, what about do you plan to talk • Any agreement is not valid, if there is not any tiny written mention • You can set up Confluence page, excel table, whenever you want • Each meeting should have action items and meeting minutes • Follow agreed action items, • do not wait till the next 1t1 meeting to tell “ohh, sorry, I did not have time to work on your question”
  • 10. 1) Typical meeting Regularity 1 time per 4-5 weeks – for Junior staff 1 time per 8 weeks – for Senior staff Duration: 30min 2) Crisis flow meeting Regularity: As regular, as needed. Typically 1 time per months Duration: no longer than 1h. Better will be schedule Meeting part 2 3) Place You can have a lot of morning coffee together, discuss issues / plans / etc. But, if it is not named as 1t1, team member will tell to everyone “no, I do not have any 1t1 meetings”. WHAT IS THE IDEA RIGHT TIME RIGHT PLACE
  • 11. • Let your team member to talk more • Try do not interrupt • Be active listener, do not push with your vision of life • Remember about technique 5Why -> find root cause • Create, make plans, even high-level • Find what is a driver for this person • Find expectations of your team member • Ask for a feedback • Finish meeting with summary and agreed action items • If there is nothing to talk and you complete discussion faster, than expected – finish 1t1 Tips during 1t1 meeting Partnership, synchronization, healthy conversation WHAT IS THE IDEA
  • 12. WHAT ABOUT OWN 1T1? There are two options: • Your manager will facilitate a meeting • Your manager will NOT facilitate a meeting So, what to do? • is there a need for a meeting? • prepare questions • use technique Q&A • follow rules above: Agenda, Follow-up Everyone wants to feel, that someone takes care on us. But, on management level we pretend to be self-organized. Let’s do not make things more complex, that it is. Let’s try to avoid baby-sitting
