- Where you can find the case studies
- Demographic information can enable one to compare their community to these peer communities. There are a wide representation of sizes, along with communities that may have more limited resources. In addition, a map shows the location of the community within its county, state, and ultimately the U.S.
- Sprinkled throughout the case studies are larger photos showing what the infrastructure found looks like. For a summary of which infrastructure can be found in a specific community, see the summary table like this one for Arcadia, Florida. The final report also provides a summary table for all communities.
- A timeline is provided in each case study. This may enable other communities to see how a community progressed through planning to implementation. It may also help to describe that implementing bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure is often a long-term effort.
- Every case study has a map featuring key bicycle and/or pedestrian infrastructure found. The map visually shows what the infrastructure looks like with an elevation view photo along with its spatial location within the community.
- Supporting Programs – within this section is a listing of consistent examples identified and whether or not it was found in the community being discussed within the case study. Morehead, Kentucky, was the only place where scooters were found. Scooters may be used by those who do not know how to bicycle, but who may want to move faster and consequently further than walking may afford. In Ruidoso, New Mexico, we were told that the present bicycle shop started out as a helmet and a bicycle with a chain in free borrowed space for a period of time because another business owner in the community saw value in having a bicycle shop. Today, it’s a full service bicycle shop. Having a bicycle shop in a community enables access and can also ensure that a bicycle can continue to operate. There are other examples besides a bicycle shop, like this one from Silver City, New Mexico. Here, community members can work to earn a bike.
- In every community, even within only being in a the community for approximately a day, people were observed walking and bicycling.
