Diabetes: 101
www.behealthywellness.com
What is Diabetes…
Diabetes is a progressive disease that results when the
pancreas fails to provide adequate insulin, or the insulin doesn’t
work as it should. Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes.
There are 3 types of diabetes:
Type 1: Requires insulin
therapy and usually occurs in
people under 30 years old.
Type 2: Pancreas makes insulin
but it doesn’t work properly.
Most common, occurs in people
over 40 years old & overweight.
Pre-diabetes…
This is your warning sign
signaling you that it’s time
to make changes.
If your blood sugar is higher than normal
but not high enough to meet the criteria for
diabetes… your next steps can determine a
reversal in your condition.
Or if left untreated…
it will progress to type 2 diabetes.
Inactivity…
The more sedentary your
lifestyle, the greater your risk
for type 2 diabetes.
Physical activity helps you
control your weight, moving
burns sugar for energy &
improves your response to
insulin.
Is your work day spent sitting at a desk?
Do you spend your evenings watching TV?
Do you live in a driving or walking city?
Small Steps Make a Big Difference…
2.  Eat real food that is
grown that comes from the
land or sea. Organic is best to
avoid toxins from pesticides
& herbicides. Enjoy cooking
and eating at home.
3.  Avoid packaged, processed food made in
manufacturing facilities. These foods are low in
nutritional value and filled with sugar, salt,
preservatives, artificial flavors and colors.
A New Day is a New Chance…
Make daily goals, here’s some great ideas to get you started:
•  Raise your heart rate a minimum of 30 minutes
every day.
•  You can do this all at once or
you can chunk it into several
10 minute fitness breaks
throughout your day.
Stop Your Stress
Step 4: More stress = more weight.
Stress will make it difficult
to control your diabetes.
worry anxiety
tension nervousness,
stomach upset sadness
rapid breathing rapid heart
Hormones released during stress increase your blood
pressure, raise your heart rate, can cause your blood
sugar to rise & increase your weight.
Can I just take a pill…
There are a variety of medications that
are usually an important part of your
treatment plan, but first lifestyle changes
are usually recommended.
Diabetes is closely related to heart disease.
So you need to control your blood pressure and protect
your heart by lowering your cholesterol. You may be
prescribed statins and blood pressure medicine to
reduce your risk of complications.
Your physician will talk to you about insulin should it
become necessary in your diabetic care.
Questions?
The reality is that you are in
charge of your diabetes. There
are a lot things you can do to take
care of yourself. Modifying your
behavior might prove challenging,
but it is the only sure way to
achieve control. A positive
attitude will help keep your
healthy.
While genetics and environment play a role in your diagnosis,
diabetes is NOT your fault.
However, it IS your responsibility.
Questions?
Do I Have to Give Up
Sugar? Sugar does not
have a regular place in a
diabetes friendly diet but a
small amount with meals can
be managed. It must be
counted as a small part of
your total carb intake for the
entire day. The total
amount of carbs you eat at a
meal & for the entire day is
most important!
Questions?
Do I Have to Test My Blood?
Self-monitoring your blood sugar is
an important tool in controlling
your diabetes. Your doctor will
instruct you on how often, when
and your target goals.
Improving your diet and exercise
habits will help manage your
numbers within an optimum range.
