Chicago Diabetes Prevention Program (CDPP) - Week 1
1. As you enter, introduce yourself to the
people around you. We'll take your weight
in order to establish a baseline for
measuring success!
We’ll weigh in at the beginning of every
session!
4. Icebreaker
Find a partner
What’s your partner’s name?
What’s their favorite food?
After a few minutes, you’ll introduce your partner to
the group!
5. Why did you join this group?
By a show of hands, why did you join this group?
To get active?
To lose weight?
To prevent Type 2 Diabetes?
To support a friend or family member?
For another reason?
6. CDPP Program Structure
We meet every Tuesday until Memorial Day
Then, we meet every other Tuesday for the remainder of the program.
Over the course of the program, we will...
Have weekly weigh-ins
Measure your your blood sugar (Hemoglobin A1c) to monitor progress.
Give you a new packet of information each week.
8. What is prediabetes?
Prediabetes means your blood sugar is higher
than normal, but not high enough for a doctor to
diagnose you with diabetes.
People with prediabetes are at risk for:
Diabetes
Heart disease
StrokeThe good news is that losing weight and
being active can cut your risk for diabetes in
half!
9. What is diabetes?
Food contains sugar (also called glucose).
Normally, the body breaks down sugar using a chemical called insulin.
Insulin helps to turn sugar into energy!
In people with diabetes…
The body doesn’t make insulin (Type 1 Diabetes) or can’t use insulin right
(Type 2 Diabetes).
Thus, sugar can’t be turned into energy, so it builds up in the blood.
15. Closing
How many people here have a internet access or smartphone?
Questions?
We’re offering to take pictures
Think of more challenges you’ll face this week!
Next Week: Get Active!
