A Corpus of Chinese Comic Books: Database, Metadata, and Visual Object Recogn...Matthias Arnold
Chinese comics mostly appeared in the form of small rectangular pocket-books (ca. 13 x 9 cm) with stories containing a picture on the top and a short narrative on the bottom. They are called “chain(ed) pictures” lianhuanhua 连环画 or, alternatively, “small people’s books” xiaorenshu 小人书. These have been the dominant form of comic popular in China since the 1910s and, at least until the late 1980s They introduced generations of Chinese to literature as well as propaganda texts. Especially popular in the 1960s and 1970s, they were the dominating popular medium in everyday life and helped to form a cultural memory. Since the 1990s they have almost completely disappeared and can only be found in private collections today. Academic interest only gradually evolves with researcher focusing on individual artists or publishing systematic genre overviews. The Heidelberg collection is an attempt to join some of the scattered holdings in Germany to form a basis for future research. It comprises the scans of over 1200 comic books, which are combined with systematic metadata recordings and a basic contents analysis through keywords. The focus of our endeavor was on comics from the second half of the Cultural Revolution and immediately thereafter.
In my presentation I will introduce the medium lianhuanhua, discuss aspects of metadata recording and database development, as well as report on an experimental approach to automatically detect visual objects in the images.

H2020 BigDataEurope is a flagship project of the European Union's Horizon 2020 framework programme for research and innovation. In this talk we present the Docker-based BigDataEurope platform, which integrates a variety of Big Data processing components such as Hive, Cassandra, Apache Flink and Spark. Particularly supporting the variety dimension of Big Data, it adds a semantic data processing layer, which allows to ingest, map, transform and exploit semantically enriched data. In this talk, we will present the innovative technical architecture as well as applications of the BigDataEurope platform for life sciences (OpenPhacts), mobility, food & agriculture as well as industrial analytics (predictive maintenance). We demonstrate how societal value can be generated by Big Data analytics, e.g. making transportation networks more efficient or facilitating drug research.

Many museums are currently providing online access to their collections. The state of the art research in the last decade shows that it is beneficial for institutions to provide their datasets as Linked Data in order to achieve easy cross-referencing, interlinking and integration. In this paper, we present the Rijksmuseum linked dataset (accessible at http://datahub.io/dataset/rijksmuseum), along with collection and vocabulary statistics, as well as lessons learned from the process of converting the collection to Linked Data. The version of March 2016 contains over 350,000 objects, including detailed descriptions and high-quality images released under a public domain license.

Conflict is not necessarily a bad thing—it’s how we deal with the conflict that can become a problem. Often, when good projects fail, it’s because the team dynamics weren’t functioning well, or the team didn’t do adequate (or appropriate) change management. Unfortunately, there is no magic wand we can wave to fix these problems. It takes commitment, perseverance, and a sense of humor. Join us for a lively discussion on the do’s and don’ts of resolving conflict, as well as some things you can do to prevent conflict from arising in the first place.

Sherborn: Scholz - BHL-Europe: Tools and Services for Legacy Taxonomic Litera...ICZN
Literature research is the base for the scientific work of taxonomists. Therefore, large and well-curated natural history libraries are a very important prerequisite to carry out scientific projects efficiently. The library work, however, has several serious limitations that slow down the work significantly. The natural history library corpus is highly fragmented and scattered. In particular much of the early published literature is rare or is only available in a very few libraries. A lot of time and effort is involved to find and collect all scientific works that are necessary for a specific project.
Today, quick and easy access to digital literature is more and more important to facilitate scientific work. Over the last few years a large number of library resources for taxonomists have been made available online. Since 2007, the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) project is digitising the biodiversity literature holdings of numerous libraries in the UK and USA and making them available on the internet.
Since 2009, the eContentplus project Biodiversity Heritage Library for Europe (BHL-Europe) is developing four different access routes to the biodiversity literature digitised by many European and global partners over the last years. With the Global References Index to Biodiversity (GRIB, http://grib.gbv.de/), BHL-Europe provides in collaboration with the EDIT project a union catalogue of library holdings of many European and US libraries. This will facilitate the search for literature, either digitised or not. This tool will also facilitate the management of digitisation projects all over the world and collect scan request from the scientific community. For an effective access to already digitised literature, BHL-Europe is building a multilingual portal for the scientific community. This portal will also have functionalities currently not available in the BHL portal. The BHL-Europe Portal will, for example, facilitate the search for common and scientific names of biological organisms as well as person names through the implementation of various webservices (e.g. Catalogue of Life, VIAF). The backbone of the portal is a preservation and archive system built on a customised storage infrastructure housed by the Natural History Museum in London. We are currently collecting digitised literature from 27 different content providers on our servers, including all the content that is currently available through the BHL portal (http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org). In order to serve also a broader audience, the digitised literature available by BHL-Europe is also accessible by Europeana, Europe's digital library, archive and museum (http://www.europeana.eu/).

PATHSenrich: A Web Service Prototype for Automatic Cultural Heritage Item Enrichment, Eneko Agirre, Ander Barrena, Kike Fernandez, Esther Miranda, Arantxa Otegi, and Aitor Soroa, paper presented the international conference on Theory and Practice in Digital Libraries, TPDL 2013
Large amounts of cultural heritage material are nowadays available through online digital library portals. Most of these cultural items have short descriptions and lack rich contextual information. The PATHS project has developed experimental enrichment services. As a proof of concept, this paper presents a web service prototype which allows independent content providers to enrich cultural heritage items with a subset of the full functionality: links to related items in the collection and links to related Wikipedia articles. In the future we plan to provide more advanced functionality, as available offline for PATHS.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
