Europeana Connect Max Kaiser, Austrian National Library Europeana Connect Coordinator [email_address] Europeana v1.0 Workgroup Kick-Off Meeting The Hague, 2 April 2009
Objectives of Europeana Connect Sister project of Europeana v1.0 Together, both projects will build the core components and services for Europeana Backend processes to run Europeana and full scale business development: provided by Europeana v1.0 Key technical components: provided by Europeana Connect Content: provided by Europeana Connect and other e Content plus projects within the Europeana Network Cluster
Baseline: What will Europeana Connect provide to Europeana? So far there is no semantic search possible in Europeana No options for true multilingual search in place No mobile access to the content Need for a Licensing Framework Need for in-depth study of user behaviour Audio content currently available in Europeana is minimal Europeana Connect will provide back-end and front-end services that meet these requirements Will also significantly increase the audio content in Europeana
Key Objectives of Europeana Connect Provide a critical mass of audio content to Europeana and implement an audio-enabling infrastructure Build the Semantic Layer for Europeana Facilitate multilingual access to Europeana Develop novel access channels to Europeana Build value-added services Implement key infrastructure components Provide tools and methodologies for user-driven development and for testing and evaluation Build the Europeana Licensing Framework Enable stronger and wider collaborative networking

Project Partner Structure 1 Broadcast Company: RBB – Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg 1 Publishing House: Amsterdam University Press 1 Institute for Literature: Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore, Vilnius 1 Consultant Company: Eremo s.r.l., Cupramontana
Objective 1: Provide new content for Europeana
New Audio Content for Europeana Europeana Connect will add the music dimension to Europeana Will provide the necessary infrastructure for harvesting, analysing, converting and storing audio content and audio metadata for Europeana Five audio archives are consortium members Continuous approach to involvement of new audio archives for the entire duration of the project
New Audio Content for Europeana Up to 150 archives will participate as content providers Around 40.000 music tracks at project start Estimated 200.000 music tracks by project end Europeana Connect will provide the Europeana Audio Aggregation Infrastructure Harvesting, analysing and storing audio metadata Data provision for Europeana using OAI-PMH
Objective 2: Build the Europeana Semantic Layer
Europeana Semantic Layer Semantic Layer : key component to make Europeana a network of interoperating resources for object discovery and use Make Europeana content better accessible, useable and exploitable Semantic Layer will allow us to Build innovative interfaces for Europeana – allowing users to explore Europeana using semantically enriched content along paradigms like “Who?” – “Where?” – “When?” – “What?” Perform automatic processing of semantically enriched data Prerequisite for integration of and with semantically aware WWW services
Europeana Semantic Layer Build a repository of harvested semantic resources Vocabularies, classification schemes … Deploy a mechanism to ingest semantic material into the repository Convert data into semantic representations Semantic processing will mostly use SKOS Semantically enrich Europeana content by mapping it to these semantic representations Enhance the semantic network by identifying new semantic connections between objects / nodes Automate these workflows to the largest possible scale
Objective 3: Multilingual access to Europeana
Multilingual Access to Europeana Content Multilingual aspects are at the heart of making Europeana content accessible for users across all European countries Europeana metadata descriptions are standardised, but generally not multilingual Europeana Connect will provide multilingual access capabilities for Europeana  Users will be able to find relevant content in Europeana even if its not described in their native / preferred language
Multilingual infrastructure and tools Europeana Repository of Language Resources for translation and mapping Suite of tools for multilingual mapping of controlled vocabularies for precise translations Suite of translation services for querying and browsing Start with core set of languages : English, French, German, Italian, Spanish Expand the core set with additional languages Dutch, Hungarian, Portuguese, Polish, Swedish
Objective 4: New access channels for Europeana
Spatio-temporal User Interface Make use of time-related and geographical metadata of the Europeana Semantic Layer Provide a new visual access channel for Europeana Combination of spatial and temporal metadata for visualisation Interactive and generic map, combined with timeline for tagged events, places and characters in Europe
Mock-up of the Spatio-temporal User Interface
Mobile Access Client Middleware for mobile access Allows for access to Europeana from different mobile devices or applications Adapts query results for mobile usage Web server for mobile device browsers Rich mobile client access application for Windows Mobile based devices E.g. queries based on the user‘s current location (based on GPS data)
Objective 5: New value-added services for end-users
Multimedia Annotation Service Allows users across Europe to make their own contribution to Europeana content Comments, discussion, linking Add value to existing content Enhance Europeana searchability through user-provided metadata and links to other media Support establishment of social networks around Europeana Support for tagging, linking and annotating of media resources in various formats Support for annotation of media parts / segments
Integration of EOD eBooks on Demand Service Europeana will provide access to millions of digitised items But will still represent only small fraction of the analogue collections available in European heritage institutions Integration of eBooks on Demand (EOD) Service into Europeana Existing digitisation-on-demand service Allow for an automatic and generic transfer of eBooks created within EOD to Europeana Develop Print-on-Demand demonstrator for Europeana
Objective 6: Key infrastructure components
