What is tense?
• Tense is a form of a verb used
to indicate the time , and
sometimes the continuation or
completeness of an action in
relation to the time and
speaking.
Types of tenses.
Tenses
Present Past Future
Parts of present tense.
• 1) Simple present tense
• 2) Present continuous tense
• 3) Present perfect tense
• 4) Present perfect continuous
tense
1) Simple present tense
• This tense states that a constant , unchanging ,
or repeated action , state , or habit exists in
the present.
• Uses of simple present tense :
• 1) It is used to express habitual action
• e.g My father goes for a walk everyday.
• 2) It is used to express universal truth
• E.g the sun rises in the east.
2) Present continuous tense
• It describes an incomplete ongoing present
action that is in middle of happening , but will
finish at some point.
• Uses of present continuous tense :
• 1) It is used for temporary action.
• E.g : Mr. Baxi is writing a book for children
• 2) It is used for a future planned action
• E.g : we are visiting gandhinagar this week.
3) Present perfect tense
• It signifies that an action started in past and
continues up to present.
• Uses of present perfect tense.
• 1) It is used for just completed action which has
current revelence.
• E.g : I have already spent the money on books.
• 2) It is used to express past action whose time is
not specific.
• E.g : I have never seen her before.
4) Present perfect continuous tense
• It describes an action that is began in the past
and continues up to present time.
• Uses of present perfect tense.
• 1) It is used for an action which began at some
time in the past and is still going on and
perhaps it may continue in future.
• E.g I have been listening to the commentary
since 8 “o” clock.
Parts of past tense
•1) Simple past tense
•2) Past continuous tense
•3) past perfect tense
•4) past perfect continuous
tense
1) Simple past tense
• It states that an action or situation was
finished in the absolute past and bears no
connection in the present.
• Uses of simple past tense :
• 1) It is used for a past action
• E.g : My friend wrote me a letter yesterday.
• 2) It is used for a past discontinued habit .
• E.g : She usually sang songs in the evening.
2) Past continuous tense
• It describes an action which went on during a
stretch of time in the past and finished.
• Uses of past continuous tense :
• 1) It is used for an action going on at sometime in
the past.
• E.g : My uncle came when I was reading the
novel.
• 2) It is used to refer two actions or situation
progressing in the past at the same time.
• E.g : I met him while he was going to the office.
3) Past perfect tense
• It states that an action was completed in the past
before another point in time or action in the past , or
that the action happened in the very distant past.
• Uses of the past perfect tense.
• 1) It is used to express one of the two past actions
which had completed earlier.
• E.g : The patient had died before the doctor came.
• 2) It is used for unfulfilled conditions.
• E.g : If you had worked hard , you would have got first
rank.
4) Past perfect continuous tense
• It describes an ongoing action that began in the
past , continued incessantly , and was completed
before another point in time in past.
• Uses of past perfect continuous tense.
• 1) It is used for action which began at sometime
in the past and had been going on before another
action started
• E.g : When I returned , my sister had been
reading the newspaper for a long time.

• 1) Simple future tense
• 2) Future continuous tense
• 3) Future perfect tense
• 4) Future perfect continuous tense

will take place in the future.
• Uses of simple future tense.
• 1) It is used to express habitual actions and
natural occurrences in the future.
• E.g : Dogs will always bark at an unknown
person.
2) Future continuous tense
• It describes an ongoing action that will be in
process around a point of time in future.
• Uses of future continuous tense.
• 1) It is used to refer to actions which will have
been completed by a certain time in the
future.
• E.g : They will have reached home by now.
3) Future perfect tense
• It states that a future action will be completed
before a point in time or before another
action in the future.
• Uses of future perfect tense.
• 1) It is used to refer to actions which will have
been completed by a certain time in the
future.
• E.g : They will have reached home by now.
4) Future perfect continuous tense
• It describes an ongoing future action that will
continue incessantly and be completed before a
point in time or before another action in the
future.
• Uses of future perfect continuous tense.
