At Looker, we want to make it easier for data analysts to service the needs of the data-hungry users in their organizations. We believe too much of their time is spent responding to ad hoc data requests and not enough time is spent building, experimenting, and embellishing a robust model of the business. Worse yet, business users are starving for data, but are forced to make important decisions without access to data that could guide them in the right direction. Looker addresses both of these problems with a YAML-based modeling language called LookML. This paper walks through a number of data modeling examples, demonstrating how to use LookML to generate, alter, and update reports—without the need to rewrite any SQL. First we interview the users, then we design a reporting model based on those interviews. We follow that up with mounds of ETL development to load the new model, basically keeping the user community in the dark during all that development. Does this sound familiar? This presentation will demonstrate an alternative approach using the Data Vault Data Modeling technique to build a flexible, easily-extensible “Foundation” layer in our data warehouse with an Agile, iterative methodology. Relying on the Business Model and Mapping (BMM) functionality of OBIEE, we can rapidly virtualize a dimensional reporting model using the pattern-based Data Vault Foundation layer to decrease the time, and money, it takes to get BI content in front of end users. Attendees will see a sample Data Vault model designed iteratively and deployed to the semantic model of OBIEE.

Learn about the three advances in database technologies that eliminate the need for star schemas and the resulting maintenance nightmare. Relational databases in the 1980s were typically designed using the Codd-Date rules for data normalization. It was the most efficient way to store data used in operations. As BI and multi-dimensional analysis became popular, the relational databases began to have performance issues when multiple joins were requested. The development of the star schema was a clever way to get around performance issues and ensure that multi-dimensional queries could be resolved quickly. But this design came with its own set of problems. Unfortunately, the analytic process is never simple. Business users always think up unimaginable ways to query the data. And the data itself often changes in unpredictable ways. These result in the need for new dimensions, new and mostly redundant star schemas and their indexes, maintenance difficulties in handling slowly changing dimensions, and other problems causing the analytical environment to become overly complex, very difficult to maintain, long delays in new capabilities, resulting in an unsatisfactory environment for both the users and those maintaining it. There must be a better way! With a single definition, we are able to decide at query time the best table/data source to answer a given request. We must take into consideration things such as time zone conversion, data availability, supported fact/dim based operations, request granularity, defined constraints, time range of request, and etc. Ultimately, our request is answered using Hive or RDBMS or Druid. This allows us to take advantage of performance characteristics of each data store while also allowing for a single interface for querying. Our goal isn’t to create a unified SQL layer which can be used to query multiple data stores. Our goal is to define a single view of the data where we can define post aggregates or other derived expressions which can later be used to programmatically generate a query for the target data store.
