During the first two “waves” of business intelligence, IT professionals and business analysts were the keepers of BI. They made BI accessible and consumable for end users. While this approach still applies to complex business intelligence needs, today there is a new “wave.” This third wave of BI makes BI available to every kind of user. As customer strive to take advantage of the digital transformation that is occurring in virtually every industry, they need to re-evaluate how they engage with their customers/prospects, how they transform their products and operations, and how they empower and understand their employees. In today’s world, doing each of these things is more and more reliant upon data…traditionally, everything you knew about your customers and prospects was available in your business application systems and in the heads of employees. You learned almost everything about your products BEFORE they left your warehouse. Employees used technology more to enter data than to learn from it. In the data-driven world we live in today, leveraging intelligent insights from data across customers, products, and employees is critical to be able to stay competitive and keep up with or lead digital transformation in any industry. And this isn’t just a customer’s typical business application data – it’s also about augmenting the customer’s data with additional data (e.g. search, employee behavioral data, sentiment data, benchmark data, etc..) – and applying the right intelligence to drive meaningful insights.

Every day, businesses across a wide variety of industries share data to support insights that drive efficiency and new business opportunities. However, existing methods for sharing data involve great effort on the part of data providers to share data, and involve great effort on the part of data customers to make use of that data. However, existing approaches to data sharing (such as e-mail, FTP, EDI, and APIs) have significant overhead and friction. For one, legacy approaches such as e-mail and FTP were never intended to support the big data volumes of today. Other data sharing methods also involve enormous effort. All of these methods require not only that the data be extracted, copied, transformed, and loaded, but also that related schemas and metadata must be transported as well. This creates a burden on data providers to deconstruct and stage data sets. This burden and effort is mirrored for the data recipient, who must reconstruct the data. As a result, companies are handicapped in their ability to fully realize the value in their data assets. Snowflake Data Sharing allows companies to grant instant access to ready-to-use data to any number of partners or data customers without any data movement, copying, or complex pipelines. Using Snowflake Data Sharing, companies can derive new insights and value from data much more quickly and with significantly less effort than current data sharing methods. As a result, companies now have a new approach and a powerful new tool to get the full value out of their data assets.

Data Vault Data Modeling is an agile data modeling technique for designing highly flexible, scalable, and adaptable data structures for enterprise data warehouse repositories. It is a hybrid approach using the best of 3NF and dimensional modeling. It is not a replacement for star schema data marts (and should not be used as such). This approach has been used in projects around the world (Europe, Australia, USA) for over 15 years and is now growing in popularity. The purpose of this presentation is to provide attendees with an introduction to the components of the Data Vault Data Model, what they are for and how to build them. "Unlike just a few years ago, today the lakehouse architecture is an established data platform embraced by all major cloud data companies such as AWS, Azure, Google, Oracle, Microsoft, Snowflake and Databricks. This session kicks off with a technical, no-nonsense introduction to the lakehouse concept, dives deep into the lakehouse architecture and recaps how a data lakehouse is built from the ground up with streaming as a first-class citizen. Then we focus on serverless for streaming use cases. Serverless concepts are well-known from developers triggering hundreds of thousands of AWS Lambda functions at a negligible cost. However, the same concept becomes more interesting when looking at data platforms. We have all heard about the principle ""It runs best on Powerpoint"", so I decided to skip slides here and bring a serverless demo instead: A hands-on, fun, and interactive serverless streaming use case example where we ingest live events from hundreds of mobile devices (don't miss out - bring your phone and be part of it!!). Based on this use case I will critically explore how much of a modern lakehouse is serverless and how we implemented that at Databricks (spoiler alert: serverless is everywhere from data pipelines, workflows, optimized Spark APIs, to ML). TL;DR benefits for the Data Practitioners: -Recap the OSS foundation of the Lakehouse architecture and understand its appeal - Understand the benefits of leveraging a lakehouse for streaming and what's there beyond Spark Structured Streaming. - Meat of the talk: The Serverless Lakehouse.
