Ecological sanitation utilizes human urine and composted feces in agriculture as a water-conserving and nutrient-recycling system. A study in central Nepal constructed five eco-toilets and surveyed villagers about sanitation awareness and farming practices to test using human urine for crop growth. Eighty-three percent of respondents were farmers growing vegetables and concerned about water scarcity, high fertilizer costs, and sanitation. A field experiment found cauliflower plots fertilized with urine produced similar yields as chemical fertilizer and higher yields than unfertilized plots, though more testing with different seasonal crops is needed to generalize the findings.

Results found that conventionally grown kale and peppers contained higher vitamin C levels, while aquaponically grown lettuce contained more. However, all samples were below average FDA concentrations, making the results inconclusive. Future research with improved controls is needed to more definitively compare nutrient levels between aquaponic and conventional produce. This study provides a basis for further developing our understanding of aquaponics.

History meets hydrology in a South Indian district’s perilous water gap
Kolar district, in India’s southern state of Karnataka, has been known for centuries as a district of tanks: its landscape is dotted with nearly 3,000 surface reservoirs excavated by successive ancient kingdoms to secure water for household use, livestock, irrigation and groundwater recharge. These tanks, together with shallow open wells, were the predominant sources of irrigation water up until 1985. Then the flow began to diminish, and farmers started extracting groundwater from deeper aquifers to irrigate fields.

NYSDOT is responsible for disposing of over 25,000 dead deer removed from highways each year, which costs $1-2 million annually. Passive composting is a potential method, but questions remained about pathogen reduction, worker safety, and appropriate end uses. This research project monitored six compost piles over 2005-06 to investigate pathogen reduction during passive composting of roadkill deer and develop best practices. Temperature and pathogen data was collected, including various bacteria. Compost parameters were also monitored to determine proper end uses.

Food Chain & Food Web
This document discusses food chains and food webs. It defines a food chain as the transfer of energy from primary producers like plants through a series of organisms as each is eaten. The goal is to determine which water medium best supports scallion growth to help develop optimized hydroponic systems. 1) The document summarizes a field experiment studying the effects of deficit irrigation and different mulch covers on water use and yield of drip-irrigated onions.
2) It found that onion bulb yield decreased with higher levels of water deficit, but water use efficiency increased.
3) Using straw mulch resulted in the highest onion yields, though it was similar to using clear or black plastic mulches. Straw mulch also provided significant water savings.
Performance assessment of water filtration plants in pakistan - JBES
A study was carried out to evaluate the water quality of filtration plants installed at six different places of Cantonment Board Sialkot, Pakistan to suggest and recommend guidelines for their improvement. Water samples from six Treatment plants and their respective twelve connections (two from each treatment plants) were collected before and after treatment. In this way, total samples were collected and tested. Values of these samples before and after treatment were used for comparison with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for drinking water standards. Thirty three parameters including physical, chemical and bacteriological were determined for each sample. The results were satisfactory both chemically and bacteriologically according to WHO guidelines for water quality of treatment plants. The results showed that the samples of water were fit, both before and after treatment plant except for water sample of treatment plant No. IV & V (Before treatment). Total and faecal coliform were found in these samples. Various causes of faecal contamination before treatment may be due to leakage of pipelines, operation at tubewells, layout of freshwater pipes parallel or beneath the sewerage pipes or channels. Disinfection of water at source is recommended to deal with the faecal contamination; otherwise there is no need of filtration plant.

This study examined the nutrient mass balances of nitrogen and phosphorus in an integrated shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) culture system using low salinity groundwater in Sonora, Mexico. Most of the nitrogen (43.6%) and phosphorus (98.8%) inputs came from shrimp feed. Approximately 15.2% of nitrogen and 8.9% of phosphorus inputs were converted to harvested shrimp, while 4.1% of nitrogen and 24.6% of phosphorus remained in organic sludge. Use of water for flushing night soil and enormous sewage disposal are responsible for pollution and depletion of
fresh water resources in India and other countries. The review of traditional methods in the world provides idea
of zero-waste discharge residential units. Experiences and research in India, China, Japan, America and Sweden
has indicated feasibility of waterless management of night soil, composting and use of biofertilizer product in
agriculture. A novel idea of ecological management of night soil and urine is presented in which night soil may
be conditioned for transportation and treatment by adding suitable waste product(s) from industry and other
sources. Different night soil treatment methods are reviewed and emphasized the need for further research on
whole cycle of ecological management or sustainable sanitation depending on local conditions. The benefits of
this system are zero sewage discharge, reuse of waste as resource, recovery of nutrients in waste as fertilizer,
production of fuel gas and reduction of pathogens in biofertilizer. This will help in water conservation and
regenerating the quality and quantity of river flow for use as water ways and irrigation and to improve the public
health. Potential technical intervention and research needs are discussed in this article

The worlds population is projected to grow from about 7.7 billion in 2019 to 9.6 billion people by 2050. More than half of this growth is expected in Sub Saharan Africa SSA China and India. As the cities are urbanizing and population is migrating in search of better living standards there is double impulse for food in these magnets of growth. This field research was presented at the 2015 3rd Global Conference on Climate-Smart Agriculture in Montpelier, France on March 18, 2015.
Climate change and climate variability pose significant risks to smallholders in the rainfed lowlands of Lao PDR. Increased surface temperatures, declining rainfall, persistent drought and depletion of soil nutrients all serve to impact agricultural productivity and livelihoods. This study investigates the impact of five treatments on soil nutrients, moisture, plant growth, and yield of water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica). The treatments tested were rice husk biochar only, biochar inoculated with manure, manure tea, inorganic fertilizer and the control. The costs and benefits of the treatments were also assessed. The randomized complete block design was used to assign five treatments and eight replications to the experimental units. Biochar was produced through slow pyrolysis. Soil physical properties were assessed with the visual soil assessment method and 15-randomized soil samples were collected for chemical analyses. Sprinklers were used for irrigation and a weather station installed to monitor the climate. Descriptive statistics and analysis of variance were used to analyze the data. Costs-benefits evaluation of the treatments was conducted to determine the net benefits relative to the initial costs ratio. The analysis of variance of mean yield indicates that the difference in yield among the treatments was highly significant. The computed F value (8.28) was higher than the F critical (2.64) at the 5% level of significance. The calculated coefficient of variance of mean yield was 17.33%. The net benefits to initial costs ratio of treatments suggest that the control (4.11), biochar inoculated with manure plus NPK (1.64), and biochar plus manure tea (1.01) are preferred. The net benefits and initial costs evaluation of treatments is important to assess whether utilizing these treatments would impact smallholders’ livelihoods. The results of this study contribute to the evidence that biochar could play an essential role to mitigate climate change risks by enhancing soil quality and increase agricultural productivity.
Evaluation of Biogas Production from the Digestion of Swine Dung, Plantain Pe...
This study centered on biogas production from locally available animal and kitchen wastes: swine dung (SD), plantain peel (PP) and fluted pumpkin stem (PS) using five 32-Litres metallic prototype digesters. The anaerobic digestion was in the ratio of 3:1 of water to waste for all the samples as follows: Sample A was 100%SD, Sample B; 100% PP, Sample C; 100% PS, Sample D; 50%SD+50%PP and Sample E; 40% SD+30% PP+30% PS. The retention time was 30 days and parameters like pH, pressure, daily biogas production, ambient and slurry temperatures alongside the physico-chemical properties of wastes were monitored. The cumulative gas production yield was 11.5L, 35.1L, 39.5L, 46.9L, 59.3L for Sample A, Sample B, Sample C, Sample D and Sample E respectively. The flammable time was 15th, 5th, 25th, 26th, 2nd day for sample A, sample B, sample C, sample D and sample E respectively. The result revealed that the blend of the 3 substrates i.e. sample E: 40% SD+30% PP+30% PS gave the highest yield of biogas and flamed earlier than the other samples while sample A: 100%SD had the lowest yield of biogas. The results also showed that the sample that had the highest composition of methane in the biogas produced was Sample D: 50%SD+50%PP with 85.6989% while the lowest composition of methane was found in Sample C to be 79.0996%. The TS, TVS, BOD and VS were seen to be consistently reducing showing the level of waste treatment achieved during the digestion period of 30 days.

Water is essential to sustain the life. Water samples have collected from a different urban area of H. D. Kote
town of Mysore district from different sources such as hand pump, public taps, and stored household drinking
water. Physico-chemical and microbiological characteristics of the water samples were analysed following the
standard methods to evaluate the quality of drinking water. All physic-chemical parameters are within the
permissible limit to WHO. The microbiological analysis shows that that t nearly 53 % of the samples were
observed with coliform contamination. The significant difference among water sources regarding total plate
count was observed, where stored household water has relatively higher compared to tap and borewell water
exceeding the standard limit. Both hand pump and the tap water were not detected with any E. coli
contamination whereas 80% of the household stored water samples have shown E. coli contamination. The
presence of significant counts of coliforms in stored household water indicates post poor sanitation and
existence of human activities. Attention should be given to the collection, storage, and management by
additional treatment to maintain and prevent excessive microbial growth

This research was conducted to evaluate the impact of untreated brewery effluent on the bacteriological characteristic of agricultural soil. This is to ascertain the suitability of untreated brewery effluent for irrigation purposes. Untreated brewery effluent was aseptically collected from Intafact brewery, Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria., while agricultural soil was obtained from a maize farm in Onitsha. Five kilograms of the soil sample was treated with 200 ml of the effluent in a pot experiment and allowed for 80 days. The bacteriological characteristic of the effluent and soil samples treated and untreated was determined by estimating the total bacterial count, total coliform count, fecal coliform count, Pseudomonas count, Rhizobial count and Clostridium count. Results obtained showed that the untreated brewery effluent had total bacterial count of 5.2 × 103cfu ml, total coliform count of 0.5× 103cfu ml, Pseudomonas count of 0.7 × 103cfu g and zero fecal coliform, Rhizobium and Clostridium counts. The total bacterial count, total coliform count, Pseudomonas count, rhizobial count and Clostridium count for the untreated and treated soil samples were 10.8× 103cfu g and 22.8× 103cfu g, 7.2× 103cfu g and 11.4× 103cfu g, 0.9 × 103cfu g and 2.5 × 103cfu g, 0.4× 103cfu g and 0.73× 103cfu g, 1.2 × 103cfu g and 8.0 × 103cfu g respectively. A total of 34 bacterial organisms belonging to ten different genera Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Azotobacter, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Rhizobium, Proteus, Enterobacter, Klebsiella and Serratia were isolated from all the samples analyzed. While Enterobacter sp. occurred most in the effluent sample, Bacillussp predominated in the untreated soil sample. Rhizobium and Pseudomonas count were significantly higher p value 0.05 in the treated soil sample. — The aim of this research was to investigate the groundwater quality in El Barreal basin (Córdoba, Argentina), through bacteriological analysis and antibiotic resistance of fecal bacteria indicators and their relationship with geochemical and land uses characteristics. Groundwater samples were collected in 36 wells and the following parameters were determined: major chemical components, heterotrophic plate counts, total and fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Antibiotic resistance of E. coli was analyzed using standard methods. The chemical and bacteriological analysis showed that more than 80 % of samples were unfit for human consumption. Bacteriological contamination was significant in 36 % of samples. The multivariate analysis between bacterial and geochemical variables explained local contamination conditions, evidenced by the arrival of bacteria and some typical indicators (NO 3-, Cl-y HCO 3-) to groundwater. No significant correlation between NO 3-and bacterial counts was observed, which let us to interpret that part of NO 3-contents can be supplied by inorganic fertilizers. Total and fecal coliforms were linked to a local increase of Cl-and HCO 3-and a decrease of pH and dissolved oxygen, indicating the arrival and degradation of organic matter into groundwater. The resistance pattern of total E. coli isolates (n=12) showed that the highest percentages were observed for antibiotics of animal use (ampicillin, tetracycline and cephalothin). The analysis of results revealed the impact of land uses demonstrating that livestock activities are the main punctual contaminant sources in this sedimentary aquifer.Hydroponics 1.pptx
This study compares the effectiveness of rice washing and rainwater as growth mediums for lettuce in a hydroponic system. Sixteen lettuce plants were divided into two groups of eight plants, with one group grown in rice washing and the other in rainwater. The researchers measured the number, length, and width of leaves on each plant weekly to analyze differences in growth between the two mediums. Statistical t-tests were used to determine if observed differences were statistically significant. The results of the study could help farmers identify optimal hydroponic growth mediums and improve lettuce cultivation.

Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. BEST PAPER International Conference on Research in Science and Technology (ICRST),10-11 November2016 K C Sharda GICICRST1608073 Ecological Sanitation and Its Benefits: An Experimental Demonstration To Raise Awareness And Livelihood In Central Nepal Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies, Kyoto University, Japan Abstract: Ecological sanitation can be defined as water conserving and nutrient recycling system for use of human urine and composted fecal matter in agriculture. In Nepal, every year 180 thousand ton of chemical fertilizer were imported. Ecological sanitation would count a lot to utilize locally available resources, to regenerate soil fertility, and to save national currency. The study was carried out at Makawanpur, Nepal from March – August, 2016 to test the efficacy of human urine for improving crop performance and to estimate the feasibility of ecological sanitation. Five eco-san toilets were constructed and questionnaire survey was done. Villagers were asked about socio-economic parameters, farming practices, awareness of ecological sanitation and fertilizer value of urine. Eighty three percent respondents were engaged in agriculture growing mainly vegetables may raise the feasibility of ecological sanitation. Their concern on water deficiency in dry season, high demand of chemical fertilizer, sanitation awareness need to be solved. In the field experiment, cauliflower was cultivated to compare the fertilizer value of urine with chemical fertilizer and no fertilizer with three replications. Urine fertilized plots produced similar yields compared to chemical fertilizer and higher yields than without fertilizer. To be able to generalize this conclusion, it is important to conduct experiments with different seasonal crops.
