Case study 2
Triangulum: A Landmark Project
Worth around £4.5million (EUR 6million)
Transforms the ‘Manchester Corridor’ into a ‘smart quarter’
Learnings will be used to develop smart quarters in other European cities
Employs latest energy management technologies
Autonomous energy grid demonstrates how the entire district could be supplied
with heat and electricity
Greater use of electric vehicles

Triangulum
What are we trying to achieve?
Provide data into MCR-I Open Data
Platform
Work with the City Council and Universities
to create a Virtual Power Plant in a real
urban environment
Create a multi owner energy portfolio for
the Oxford Road Corridor
Connect to a mix of different new and
existing generation and demand assets
Connect to micro distributed generation
assets
Connect to buildings via Building
Management System
Create a new granular level aggregation
model
Explore the relationship between power
and heat
Provide a living laboratory to educate
citizens
Identify additional revenue streams
Define the business models to enable a
City to become energy self-sufficient

Case study 3
Green Ammonia
• Programme based on NH3 as an energy (storage) vector. This includes a 3-year joint
project with Innovate UK for a demonstration system, which started in
January.
• Further programmes, around improved NH3 synthesis and NH3 combustion, will follow.
• Particular challenges in electrochemical ammonia synthesis, ammonia fuel cells
and ammonia storage for vehicles.

• NH3 Wind to Value
• 200 Mio tonnes global market
• Wind to Value competitive by 2020 for high
wind sites
• Total World market  132 Billion Euros
• NH3 Renewables Integration
• NH3 as energy storage medium
• More cost effective than Hydrogen, REDOX,
NaS or Li-ion batteries
• Comparable with CAES but without
geographic limitations
• Market potential
– 1.3B€/GW decoupled
– UK onshore 13GW in 2020
•Rescuing of Stranded Resources
• NH3 as energy vector
• Proven infrastructure for bulk transport
• Energy transport costs comparable to gas
pipelines
• Carbon-free transportation
• Easily transportable fuel
• Useable in fuel cells, diesel engines, turbines
