Corrie Ten Boom is the daughter of a popular watchmaker and christian living in
Holland during the beginning of Hitler, the Nazis, and hatred against Jews. The Ten
Boom s, however, always do the right thing and help anyone in need. Before their
mother died, their household was always full of poor neighbors needing food or tea
or anything else they could provide. This kindness continues into the beginning of the
Holocaust. Corrie begins to join an underground system, involved with helping and
sheltering Jews. At first, she was just trying to get some to different places where
they would be safe, however. Corrie got so involved that the watch shop, called the
Beje. became the center. She had monthly deliveries of food ration card, new Jews
would show up to her door almost weekly, and the rest of the people involved in
the underground had a secret code or phone calls, revolving around watch talk.
Eventually, Corrie could not find a place or a man, so he ended up living with the
Ten Booms. They ended building a secret room with an elaborate warning system
installed. They had many Jews living in that room, but little did she know that the
entire town knew of her work in the underground and o the Jews in her house. Corrie
ended up being caught and taken to prison, along with her father and sister. Corrie
kept her with all this time, which helped her make it through. Eventually, after
finding out that her father has died in prison, Corrie and her sister get to see the rest of

along with my husband (who works in banking technology), my entire family

This book is a memoir about her life as a child with parents who could never settle
down. She worked herself from the bottom up, and continues to strive as a published

Because Unhappy Endings are Overrated
Margaret Atwood s Happy Endings is not a typical short story. With remarkable
brevity, it provides readers a gold mine for discussion on the nuances of
relationships and storytelling. Best described as metafiction, Happy Endings self
consciously draws attention to its artificiality; it is less a story and moreover an
instruction manual on how to write one. From a surface level, the author parodies
storytelling conventions. Upon deeper examination, however, the story is actually a
satire on on the collective psyche of the middle class. This essay will explore the story
s meaning from these two levels. In scenario A, Atwood introduces Mary and John.
Their lives appear to be happy and financially successful, approaching each milestone
without mentioning any challenges. They find their jobs stimulating and challenging
(Atwood). They have worthwhile friends, they go on fun vacations, and their children
are raised well (Atwood). These characters are remarkably flat, with adjectives
stimulating and challenging describing three times.
From a surface level, Atwood parodies the unrealistic simplicity that fairytale like
stories present. As children, readers are accustomed to stories with happy endings;
two people fall in love, any problems are solved, and all of the loose ends are tied up
in the end. As these readers become adults, however, they realize that life is not

During the Gilded Age, growing disparities between the rich industrialists, financiers,
and employers of the era and poorer workers contributed towards a shift in people s
opinions and beliefs about freedom. The elite and the urban poor came to have
contrasting views on what freedom meant and what social conditions and

The elite s definition of freedom began to focus on laissez faire economics and

Noble or Narcissistic Many people have different understandings of what it is to be
a hero. In the dictionary the definition of a hero is a person, typically a man, who
people admire or idolize for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.
Beowulf lacks noble qualities. Noble qualities show what he will fight for what they
believe in no matter the cost or the benefits. A true hero fights for the good in the
world and what they believe in their heart.
In the epic poem Beowulf, fighting for glory and honor shows noble qualities, but
for the wrong reasons. Beowulf has an idealistic background which provides glory
for him. Beowulf, strong and courageous, is the prince of Geats. Once he makes a
vow, he stands by his word, no matter what the cost, even if it takes his life. He is
reluctant to back down from battle, just so he can be there for the people who are
