ISLAMIC DIETARY LAWS
Prohibited animal flesh: pork.
The Koran outlines the foods which can be eaten (halal) and
those forbidden (haram).
Beef, lamb and chicken can only be eaten if the animal has
been slaughtered by the halal method. This means that the
animal must be killed by slitting its throat. The animal will then
have all the blood drained from its body.
Muslims will only eat meat slaughtered by Muslims, Christians
or Jews. 5

ISLAMIC DIETARY LAWS
Haram are foods which are forbidden. Examples include
pork, blood, alcohol and meat sacrificed to idols.
During the month of Ramadan, Muslims need to refrain from
eating, drinking and smoking from sunrise to sunset.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.

DIET IN HINDUISM
Prohibited animal flesh: all, except lamb, chicken and fish.
Strict Hindus are vegetarian. The cow is held in high regard and a
symbol of abundance, therefore Hindus do not eat beef.
Lacto-vegetarianism is favored, which includes milk-based foods
and all other non-animal derived foods, but it excludes meat and
eggs.
Non-vegetarian Hindus
Hindus who eat meat demand quick and painless death to the
animal, a process classified as Jhatka (quick death) meat. This
method of slaughter is different than Halal meat, where the main
neck artery or tongue of the animal is cut and the animal slowly
bleeds to death, a method of meat preparation that is
considered unacceptable to Hindus.
Some Hindus may also avoid certain foods, such as domestic fowl,
salted pork, milk, ghee, onions, garlic, eggs and coconut.

CHRISTIAN DIETARY LAWS
 The law that God gave the Israelites goes into great detail
regarding what foods they were and were not allowed to eat.
bans eating the following animals:
- Those that chew cud or have a split hoof but not both (like
camels, rabbits, pigs)
- Sea creatures that do not have fins and scales (like
crustaceans)
- Birds that eat flesh or carrion (like crows, raptors, sea gulls)
- Most winged insects except those that swarm and jump
 Seventh-Day Adventist
 Seventh-Day Adventists are lacto-ovo-vegetarian – they avoid
meat, poultry and fish but eat eggs and milk products. Alcohol is
also prohibited. 8

BUDDHIST DIETARY LAWS
There are no set prescriptions for food restrictions in
Buddhism. Under the concept of ahisma / doing no harm, a
lacto-vegetarian diet is followed by many Buddhists. Buddhist
monks have additional restrictions such as fasting and not
eating solid foods after noon.
Prohibited animal flesh: all.
Buddhists believe they should not be responsible for the
death of any other living organism. Therefore, most
Buddhists follow a strict vegetarian, if not vegan diet.
They also avoid the consumption of alcohol. 9

I-TAL DIETS
Influenced by the Rastafari movement, this diet is all natural.
Only organic food consumed during this diet. Many believe
is to be vegetarian or vegan, but the main bases is organic.
Kosher diets
Kashrut is the name of the dietary law in the Jewish faith.
This extremely complex set of guidelines includes restrictions
on how meat is slaughtered, which animals/birds/seafood
may be eaten (most famously pork and shellfish are not
allowed), the part of the animal that can be eaten, who
makes certain foods, combinations of foods, avoiding
contamination, what can be eaten on religious holidays, and
more.

MORMONISM DIET
Mormonism prohibits alcohol and caffeine (in coffee, tea,
chocolate etc.).
Jainism diet
Strict Jains don’t eat meat, poultry, fish, or eggs, and
sometimes milk; they may avoid eating root vegetables as
the whole plant is killed when the root is dug up. There are
a number of religious practices involving fasting,
particularly for women.
Rastafarianism diet
Rastafarians are permitted to eat foods that are cooked
lightly. Meats are not eaten, canned goods are avoided,
and there are some restrictions on seafood. 11
