This document discusses three topics related to urbanization in New York City: Central Park, Boss Tweed, and the Brooklyn Bridge. Central Park was envisioned as a democratic public space for all New Yorkers to escape to. Boss Tweed headed the corrupt Tammany political machine and embezzled over $50 million for city projects through kickbacks and fraud before being brought down by cartoonist Thomas Nast. The Brooklyn Bridge took 14 years to complete at double the estimated cost and 5,000 workers, and represented New York's expansion and merger of steel and industry.

Over the past 20 years or so I have been reading, studying, talking and writing about the work of my namesake: Prof. Carroll Quigley. For forty years he lectured, finally obtaining a Professorship at the School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, Washington. During his Presidency Bill Clinton, a former student, quoted Quigley extensively on such matters as history, political structure and foreign policy. Prof. Quigley's seminal work "Tragedy and Hope" was a watershed in contemporary understanding of the history of the West, in general, and the United States, in particular. In this book Carroll Quigley explained his understanding of the realpolitik of power structures of the world and many might say this cost him dearly. However, his perspective on life was that you should endeavour to do your best, regardless of consequences. In 1976, one month before he died, he delivered a series of three lectures on one central topic "Public Authority and the State in the Western Tradition: A Thousand Years of Growth 976-1976. Remarkably, 32 years later, this lecture series is timely.

This document summarizes key takeaways from the 2015 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. It discusses how cognitive neuroscience can be applied in advertising to make messages memorable by turning them into distinct memories encoded in the appropriate part of the brain. Brands must have a distinctive identity wrapped in an emotional story that creates meaningful connections. Data should be used creatively to target ads effectively. Brands need to focus on experiences rather than being rational and listen to audiences have conversations.

Levi's faced declining sales in the early 1990s as their jeans were seen as "uncool" by young customers. Rap music and new subcultures were popular among youth at the time but Levi's was not connecting with these audiences. To maintain market share, Levi's needed to attract young people by changing their products, branding, positioning, and communications. Levi's launched a new "anti-fit" urban street approach for their 501 jeans with a lower cut, looser fit, and baggier look to appeal to teens and young adults. Their advertising also shifted to a more urban, sexy style to change the brand's image among this target audience.
