Class
• The ideal situation is for all
students to be educated
together
• The classroom a student sits in
does NOT dictate the type of
courses they take
• Students in a general education
classroom may be enrolled in
access courses and students in a
separate environment may be
enrolled in general education
courses
Course
• There are only two course
choices for core subjects:
general education courses and
access courses
• Both are based on the same
standards, but the level of
complexity is very different
• Access points and courses are
only for students with a
significant cognitive disability
and parental consent is required

BEESS Updates

Editor's Notes

  • #3 2014-15 Cohort was 357,067
  • #9 SLD eligibility disqualifies a student for Access Points because the IEP team has determined that the student does not have a significant cognitive disability.
  • #10 Standards are “setting neutral.” Courses are not settings. Check your alignment.
  • #11 No student with SLD eligibility should be enrolled in Access Courses.
  • #13 New course available on PDA portal: Paraprofessionals Supporting Students with Disabilities and Their Educators Coming soon to Personnel Development Portal for Exceptional Student Education: Reading Difficulties, Disabilities and Dyslexia
  • #16 All districts should have their MTSS procedures in their SP&P and the MTSS for reading should correspond with their K-12 Reading Plan. Because SWDs are Gen Ed Students first, these policies and procedures also apply to them.
