FACIAL ACTION CODING SYSTEM

 The Facial Action Coding System or FACS is
  used to identify facial expression
 This identifies the muscles that produce the
  facial expressions
 This system measures the relaxation or
  contraction of each individual muscle
 Generally includes facial expressions which
  cannot be easily manipulated
MICRO-EXPRESSIONS
 A micro-expression is a brief,
involuntary facial expression shown on the
face of humans according to emotions
  experienced.
 They usually occur in high-stakes situations,
where people have something to lose or
  gain.
 They are very brief in duration, lasting only
  1/25 to 1/15 of a second
NOW THAT’S A LIE!

•A person giving •Famous Monica Lewinski
evidence in Court – Bill Clinton case
•Microexpressions •Paul Ekman saw the
caught while giving an microexpressions and
answer to a lawyer. easily said that Clinton
                         was lying
LIAR! LIAR! LIAR!
 Paul Ekman’s success rate in 80-90%
 Speech doesn't fit voice, voice doesn't fit
face, face doesn't fit body movement.
 Form a baseline, look for microexpressions.
 Some common ways are speech hesistant,
swallows, think an answer, shoulder shrug,
  etc.
 These rules change for anxious and low self
  confidence people.
SMILE PLEASE !

cheeks and wrinkling around the eyes

corners of the mouth

 Paul Ekman learned this science in 20 odd
  years
 Only 50 ‘Truth Wizards’ after testing 20,000
  people
 Need to do a course/ training in FACS or
  METT
 Very difficult for a common person to acquire
  these traits.
POSSIBILITY OF VARIATION
 Perception of facial expression changes with the
    background.
 FACS included images cropped to the face
 Perception of change with darkness and lightness
    of image
 FACS converted images into gray scale before the
    study
 Perception variation with a glance
 FACS rated the face with various power and
    leadership traits.
 In FACS every image is converted into
standardized size which help in better discerning
the negative and positive attributes of a face
