UPCOMING PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION PROJECTS
NEED
Mumbai is financial capital and commercial centre of India. The growing
vehicular population, consequent traffic congestion and traffic slow down is
making public transit facilities inadequate. The biggest and most convenient
public transport, the suburban local trains, also presented a congested face
affecting the city's image. So there is a need of infrastructural upgradation.
UPCOMING INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS
• Mumbai Trans Harbour Link
• Navi Mumbai International Airport
• Mumbai Coastal Road
• Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor
UPCOMING PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION PROJECTS
• Mumbai Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail
• Goregaon-Mulund Link Road
• Planned underground tunnel between Borivali and Thane
• The 14 lines of the Mumbai metro are spread across more than 200 km, with a
further 21.289 km coverage approved and 136.4 km under the proposal. Of
this, 11.4 km are operational while 169.061 km is under construction.
Issues in Public Transportation System of
Mumbai
• With 20-22 million residents, the city
is projected to grow by another 6-8
million by 2030.
• The shortfall in capacity.
• excessive crowds on the trains
the lives of more than 36,000
the decade up to 2012, translating to
more than 10 people a day.
Solutions
Purchasing Double-Decker Train sets
• Double-decker trains provide a
percent increase in carrying
without significantly increasing
energy needed to pull the trains.
• Indian Railways already
double-decker trains in the form
several long-distance services,
as the Bengaluru-Chennai
Decker Express.
Solutions
Building an Express Railway on Top of the
Current Suburban Network
• Mumbai Suburban Railway already
significant piece of land in central
the form of rail tracks and stations.
• Construct a parallel, elevated railway on
the existing tracks
• Furthermore, elevated tracks can be
existing roads and even houses without
need for land acquisitions.
Solutions
Reasonable Expansion Further to Rural Hinterlands
• Extensions of the rail lines should only be
suitable measures to provide enough capacity to
extra traffic.
• Extra land should be acquired at the time of
• Businesses move outside central Mumbai, fewer
Mumbaikars will need to commute long distances,
reducing overcrowding on the suburban trains.
