ABSTRACT
Bauxite forms four group of capping of high hills of the Eastern Ghat,which are form SW to NE the
Gurtedu group,Chintapalli group,Paderu group, and Araku(or Antagiri ) group in a belt 130 km long and
20km wide. It occurs both on Khondalite and Charnokite. The capping on the latter.,the insitu formation
of Bauxite by alteration on Khondalite in bauxite, parallel to the foliation on the underlying Khondalite,
the psedomorophs of the Bauxite mineral Gibbsite after Garnet, Sillimanite and Feldspar and the boulder
with core of fresh rock and cover of Bauxite scraps of unaltered Khondalite and Charnokite are also
present. Compares the bauxite derived from Khondalite with derived from Charnockite and shows how
the mineralogical and structural character of the rock plays a decisive role in chemical weathering and the
in situ formation of Bauxite.
Thirteen plateaus in Sapparla region are estimated to contain over 350 million tones of potential reserves
of 780 million tones of potential reserves of Bauxite have been estimated from all the deposits including
the Chintapalli (Sapparla-Gudem-Jerrla ,480 MT ) deposits of Visakhaptanam and Gurtedu
(Katamrajukonda-Dumkonda,42 MT) deposits of East Godavari District.
Geochemistry deals with the amount of specific element in the source of rock, chemically association of
specific element with suitable or unstable mineral during weathering, the intensity of drainage during
weathering i.e., precipitation in situ (relative enrichment), vertical or horizontal groundwater transport of
wlwmnts (absolute enrichment), polygenetic alterations i.e., late diagenetic , epigenetic. The important
elements in bauxite genesis are Si, Al, and Fe. Extensive deposits exclusively or partly formed by the
removal of Silica, resulting in relative enrichment of Al and Fe. The Al/Fe relation of Bauxite on Igneous
rock and most of the Karst deposits Characterize these Bauxite.
The following are the requirement for production of 1.02 tons of Aluminum.1. Raw material (Bauxite)4.1
to 5.1 tones, 2. Calcined petroleum coke for electrode paste0.5 tones, 3. Cryolite0.10 tones, 4.
Aluminium0.036 tones, 5. Caustic soda 0.10 tones, 6. Electric energy 20,000/24,000kwh. Vast majorites
of the aluminium plants are power oriented in India, Which is in no way any exception to the conditions
prevalent in the world as whole.
