Bauhinia purpurea is a deciduous tree native to South China and southeast Asia that is commonly known as Tanki in Nepal. It can grow up to 17 feet tall in subtropical regions. It is a moderate light demander that is drought and frost hardy but fire sensitive. While browsing sensitive, it coppices well. It has a wide pH soil range and tap root system. It is primarily cultivated as an ornamental plant and for erosion control, with its leaves and flowers used as fodder. The species also has medical uses and its bark can be used for dyeing and tanning and its wood for fuel.
