Turbulent Mexican Economy
The Turbulent Mexican Economy
Today, Mexico is the twelfth largest economy in the world. Mexico s economy has expanded and Mexico is a
signatory to major deals, such as North American Free Trade Agreement and Trans Pacific Partnership.
Additionally, Mexico is a member of the Organisation for Economic Cooper and Development (OECD).
Mexico is an active o member of the world s economy. It is important to realize that the country has made
significant economic progress. However, Mexico faces trouble as it attempts to become a developed economy.
In this paper, I will outline the economic history of Mexico and its transition towards neoliberalism from
import substitution and how the government plays a smaller role in the economy. I will look ... Show more

In 1982, Mexico stopped making its payments, Their debt increased from 16 billion to 86 billion in the years
between 1975 and 1982 (Claessens and Wijinbergen 967) First, Mexico s economy showed signs of collapsing
after the price of oil dropped due to Iran, an OPEC country, beginning to produce oil again (Watkin paragraph
8). Additionally, interest rates increased due to the fact anti inflationary policies did not work; as a result,
interest rates had doubled from twelve percent to twenty four percent (Walkin 7). Suddenly, the country found
itself in economic turmoil, because their income from oil had run dry, yet the interest rates from loans
skyrocketed. Brady Bonds allowed Mexico to repay their debt. Mexican became weary of the government s
economic model because it showed signs of weakness (Camp 120). Additionally, Mexican feared the bleak
economic conditions in Mexico could led to violence as a result of greater poverty ( Camp

Theories Of FIFA
According to McMillan and Gandz case study, FIFA has had both the success and its failures with the main
issue on the case study been its scandals, which include corruption, bribery, and tax avoidance. Other issues
highlighted also include FIFA sponsorship deals, reforms, and unfavorable workers conditions that has
contributed to the attitudes of most of the employees . According to the Transparency International, corruption
within FIFA might involve referees taking a bribe, clubs demanding kickbacks for player transfers, or
companies seeing nPow (need for power) and government rigging the bids for construction contracts. The case
study has only mentioned one successful high profile lawsuit concerning FIFA corruption due to the allegation
of plausible bribery surrounding the awarding of Russia and Qatar right to host 2018 and 2022 World Cup
respectively.
Organizational Behaviour Theories and Concepts
The FIFA critical issues outlined above do link to the Classical Organizational Behaviour Theory, which rose
during the Industrial Revolution. Per this theory, people s motivation to work bases on the physical and
economic needs, rather than social needs and job satisfaction. The approach also advocates for specialization
of labor, central leadership and decision making, and profit maximization. In the case study, it is apparent that
FIFA is driven by the concept of profit maximization without caring of its workers; for example, forced labor
in world cup project in Qatar,

Anthony Mulcahy
Introduction:
Swimming upstream is a film directed by Russell Mulcahy which was based in the early 1950 s. The film was
produced in 2003 and is based on a boy named Tony Fingleton a young man from a troubled family who found
the inner strength to become a champion. Always overshadowed in his father s eyes by his brothers. The only
way Tony feels about winning his father s heart is by his extraordinary swimming talent. Tony and his father
(Harold snr) have a very unhealthy relationship as Tony struggled to get his father s approval or even be an
applaud for doing something good in his life.
The purpose of my film was to tell my audience about a boy who enjoyed playing the piano, reading books
and being successful at school. While trying to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This has made the audience feel proud of such a young talented man Tony has turned into who doesn t get
much faith and love from his father after trying his hardest to do something right to gain his father s love and
blessing. Russell has developed the character of Tony by expressing his problems with his father throughout
the film from Harold Snr disliking him playing the piano to getting beaten but by his older brother Harold Jnr
to then achieving something but still not getting any type of applaud from his father. Harold Snr then separated
Tony from his brother/best friend John when it came to swimming practice which pulled Tony and John
further away from each other as they were both each other s support when it came to competition shown in the
scene where Tony was looking around for John to do their handshake they did before every race which then
made him not perform to his best and made him loose to his brother. Tony then went further in his swimming
as he was very talented. As Tony went to say goodbye to his father before heading off to Harvard university
Harold Snr didn t have an interest in saying goodbye he basically just shrugged him off, Tony didn t know
what to do as he had tried everything to just get his father to love him for who he was and what he achieves.
This developed Tony into more of a stronger hearted boy who grew up to be a champion in the rest of his
families eyes especially

Manet And The Object Of Painting By Michel Foucault
Edouard Manet, an artist most commonly known in relation to the advent of modernist art, is credited with
introducing such painterly techniques as producing flatness in painting, and, a layering down of hues (alla
prima). He is regarded as the father of modernité, having many written works have been produced as
supplements, responses or studies of his paintings and influences in art three of which I present as subjects of
scrutiny in this paper: the Painter of Modern Life by French poet and essayist Charles Baudelaire, who
produced several essays in relation to the phenomenon of modernity (as both modulator and interpreter) Manet
and the Object of Painting by Michel Foucault, a French philosopher and critic, and Modernist Painting by
Clement Greenberg, a mid 20th century art critic. In each of these respective pieces, I will be analyzing closely
the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They differ in terms of length, structure, style and method of evocation. Baudelaire resorts to sub heading
sectioning, dividing his thoughts under twelve primary pillars, starting with I. Beauty, Fashion and Happiness.
Using such large, overbearing words and then breaking them down into observational, almost ethnographical
paragraphs where he describes behaviors, views and examples in relation to his larger claims. In Foucault s
Manet and the Object of Painting, the structural form differs, as the text was originally a 1971 lecture given in
Tunisia alongside a series of other lectures he delivered in Milan, Tokyo, and Florence. Thus, what we find is a
slightly tweaked, translated transcription of the talk. Greenberg s Modernist Painting, however slightly shorter
than the two texts, reads clearly and is structured starting from a broad articulation of modernism that is then
rationed into specific claims or takes, enveloped in critical reflections upon artistic practice as well as
philosophy of the phenomenon similar to Baudelaire s

Greek Alphabet
Many scholars have yet to prove the origin of Greek alphabet. However, one fact is for certain: the origin of
Greek alphabet does not mean the origin of the writing system to the Greek language. Not a completely new
invention, the Greek alphabet is undoubtedly from a script that the Semitic peoples of Levantine coast used.
Originally fashioned by ethnic Phoenician groups, the source alphabet is connected to the Ugaritic groups of
writing systems that developed around the city of Ugarit (Powell 2009: 230). Nevertheless, the source alphabet
and the Greek alphabet work differently as the Greek alphabet had specific signs for vowels that Phoenicians
did not. Hence, regarding such differences and the adaptations of the original source ... Show more content on

However, due to the earliest alphabetic inscription from Gabii being dated to 775 and no other inscriptions yet
discovered before the eighth century, such argument to push the date is diminishing, though not completely
eliminated (Powell 2009: 236). In historical terms, with contacts between the Aegean and the outside world
growing during the eighth century and evidence for Phoenician settlers in the Aegean and Greeks in northern
Syria, it is most probable that the origin of Greek alphabet is from the early eighth century BC.
In addition to the how, where, and when of this alphabet s origin, the reason for its invention is also vague.
Moreover, according to Wilson, this question of why the Greeks adopted and adapted the north west Semitic
script has received relatively little scholarly attention (Wilson 2009: 548). Though theories of mercantile and
poetic origins exist, these theories still pose problems and other explanations such as for ownership denotation
have been offered that need to be further studied. Hence, this research project intends to undertake the step to
investigate the ownership theory as an explanation for why the Greeks adopted and adapted the alphabet of the
Phoenicians.
Hence, it is essential to understand the problems that the existing knowledge of the reason the monetary and
poetic origins generates. The monetary origin begins

Erik Erikson Essay example
Erik Homberger Erikson was born in 1902 near Frankfort, Germany to Danish parents. Erik studied art and a
variety of languages during his school years, rather than science courses such as biology and chemistry. He did
not prefer the atmosphere that formal schooling produced so instead of going to college he traveled around
Europe, keeping a diary of his experiences. After a year of doing this, he returned to Germany and enrolled in
art school. After several years, Erickson began to teach art and other subjects to children of Americans who
had come to Vienna for Freudian training. He was then admitted into the Vienna Psychoanalytic Institute. In
1933 he came to the U.S. and became Boston s first child analyst and obtained a position ... Show more

Erikson s main contribution was to bridge the gap between the theories of psychoanalysis on the problems of
human development, which emphasize private emotions, and the broader social influences that bear upon the
individual. He was a strong proponent of the concept that social environment plays a major role in the
development of personality. Going beyond the of a child s early life, Erikson concentrated on broader issues of
peer culture, school environment, and cultural values and ideals. This led him to study the period of
adolescence, in which he documented the interaction of a person s inner feelings and impulses with the world
that surrounds the person. Erikson developed eight stages of human development. Briefly I would describe all
eight my I will concentrate on stages five and six which are adolescence and young adulthood. Myer describes
the stages in the following manner. Stage one occurs during the first year This stage is called infancy (trust vs.
mistrust) during this stage if needs are dependably met, infants develop a sense of basic trust. The second stage
is called the toddler stage (autonomy vs. shame and doubt). This stage occurs while the baby is two years old,
in this stage toddlers learn to exercise will do things for themselves, or they doubt their abilities. The third
stage is called the preschooler between the ages of three and five (initiative vs. guilt). During this stage
preschoolers learn to initiate

Chapter Fifteen Week 1 Accounting Summary
I chose to do a section within chapter fifteen which is all about accounting. In my opinion, accounting is the
hardest concentration you can take on. I believe this because there are many different components that go into
even just a simple transaction. Accounting is a comprehensive system for collecting, analyzing, and
communicating financial information to a firm s owners and employees, to the public, and various regulatory
agencies. The basics to accounting in bookkeeping. However, accounting is much more than just keeping
records. Accountants assess the information in order to make firms make informed decisions. Many people
rely on this information including business managers, employees and unions, investors and creditors, tax
authorities, and government regulatory agencies. Each one of them use the same information but in a different
way. For example, business majors use the information to assess how they are doing and what they would like
to do in the future. However, investors and creditors use the information to assess the risk of both lending
money and potentially investing in them. Information kept by accountants are a vital part of anyone in the
business sector. There are two main fields you can go into. The first is financial accounting. Financial
accounting focuses on the external users. This includes stockholders, agencies, suppliers, and creditors. When
they prepare their reports such as the income statement and the balance sheet, they focus on the business as a
whole. Managerial accounting serves internal users. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Sula by Toni Morrison
Sula by Toni Morrison, is a book about a black female and the various events throughout her life. The majority
of these events were at the fault of Sula, but because of her past she did not know, or could not understand any
better. Sula became the woman that she was because of the people and events that were around her during her
childhood. When Sula was a child, she grew up faster than most children because of the things that she saw
and heard, so it was almost as if she had a loss of childhood. When Sula was only three years old, her father
died. Although this may not have had a direct effect on Sula because of how young she was, her mother,
Hannah, was left without a husband and with an unquenchable thirst for maleness (Bukisa). ... Show more

Sula s relationship with Nel was another major factor in her maturation into a woman. Sula and Nel were like
each other s support systems (Bukisa). Throughout their childhood, Nel always supported Sula and vice versa,
even though they were extremely different. Nel was conservative and brought up in a relatively stable home by
a proper, lady like, mother, the way their society expected, while Sula was raised in a home where people
constantly came and went, by a mother who slept with different men on various occasions. These two
completely different worlds were what drew these two young girls to each other (Bukisa). They were opposite
in more than just their upbringing. Sula was rougher and tougher than Nel was, but her emotions were also
inconsistent. Nel, on the other hand, was quiet, and normally had a steady emotion (Bukisa). It was as if these
two girls were each one half of the same whole, making them inseparable. During their childhood, they shared
everything, including boyfriends. All of these factores contributed to Sula s personality and actions as an adult.
Sula as an adult had problems with love, recognizing boundaries, and fitting in. Sula lacked the ability to love
because of her family, mainly her mother. Hearing Hanna say that she loved Sula but did not like her made
Sula believe that love was something that was forced upon

Peter Kramer s Listening To Prozac
Book Summary Peter Kramer s book, Listening to Prozac investigates the use of the medication fluoxetine, or
better known as Prozac. Prozac is a selective serotonin inhibitor (SSRI) which means that it affects chemicals
in the brain believed to responsible for depression, anxiety, and obsessive compulsive symptoms. Prozac is
prescribed to treat these mental illnesses and is currently one of the most widely used antidepressants used in
the United States. According to Kramer s book, not only does Prozac treat depression but it make people feel
better than well. It was explained in this book that Prozac can transform the client s behavior. Early in the book
Kramer discusses the case of a woman named Tess. Tess had a difficult childhood and was at the time

She meets at least 4 criteria including: preoccupation with organization and details, shows perfectionism that
interferes with task completion, is inflexible about values, is reluctant to delegate task to others, and shows

Disorder but rather suggested that Julia s symptoms matched several criteria but they were not enough to
diagnose. However, it appears by using the DSM V rather than the DSM IV, a diagnosis is able to be obtained.
In Kramer s book Julia is eventually prescribed Prozac and sees a drastic change in her personality. After the
effects of the drug took affect Julia felt that her life much like Tess had be transformed. She was able to get
along with her children better and she was able to enjoy her marriage more. When her medication was
decreased, Julia reported that many of her symptoms reappeared and she stated I don t feel like myself

Triumph Des Willens Film Analysis
Triumph des Willens Film Review Triumph des Willens (Triumph of the Will) is a film directed by Leni
Riefenstahl that was commissioned by Adolf Hitler. The film details events around the 1934 Nuremberg
Congress, the people who were in the rally and how they responded to it. Triumph is fundamentally a pro
Hitler film that was meant to be a documentary that records history as it happened (Barsam 1975, p12). In
essence though it was a propaganda film meant to unite Germany under Hitler s regime. As in any good
propaganda film Triumph focused on portraying the good points of the Nazis and not a single negative point
was seen about them in the film. Hitler knew that for the film to be a success as a propaganda film showcasing
too much of a political view would cause Triumph to be less successful. That is why he wanted the film to be
more artistic and aesthetic. The film itself was described to be aesthetic, not political (Levinson 1998, p237).
This did not mean though that the film was not political. Triumph was filmed in a way that it subtly expresses
the political views and standpoints of the Nazi party to involve and manipulate the people who were not
interested in politics. The main purpose of the film was to garner support for Hitler s regime be they in the
form of inspiring people into joining the army, or other supporting assets for Germany such as farmers, miners,
fishers or labourers. Techniques in how these were achieved will be discussed in this review as well as its
reception both domestically and internationally. There were various techniques used in the films in order to
catch the intended audience and manipulate the German people into believing and helping Hitler s cause. An
example of this is how in Hitler s speeches he made no clear distinction between Germany, its people and the
Nazi Party. This leads to people being indoctrinated into believing that the Nazi Party was synonymous with
Germany. Another technique used were the scenes in the films about the military. To be specific the scenes
showcasing the military camps. In these scenes the personnel were having fun and bonding through activities
such as wrestling, having fun while taking a bath and other activities backed up with a soundtrack

Sight And Phonic Method
In the Literacy Methods course that is taught by, Dr. Walizer discussed this week with the class about on how
to introduce a word from the sight and phonics method, by the ERCI method. The sight method involves a
process, that starts by introducing a word, then reading it out loud, then by spelling the word, and then lastly
writing the word. It is perfectly ok to go through this method many times, just to make sure each student is
comprehending and grasping what you are trying to teach. To teach this lesson, a teacher should have the word
they are going to introduce on a notecard that the students will eventually, be able to read, spell, and write out.
The next step is when the teacher then uses the word that is being introduced in a sentence, so that the students
have a better idea of what that word ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The teacher will then have the students proof and correct again and this time they can point to the ceiling again
or to the door, but to make sure they are writing the word, by pointing to each of the letters. Although learning
the words from the sight and phonics method they had quite a few similarities as well as differences too. The
main difference between them both was the class decoding and the sounding out of each letter of the words.
Essentially, the sight word is a lot easier to memorize then the phonics method, because with the phonics
method you have to break down each sound and word by each letter too. The sight method could be a lot easier
with easier words to make it easier on your younger students and the phonics method could be a bit more
difficult, but on the other hand but helpful to them, by having them sound out each letter to determine what the
word is. If a student is unfamiliar with vowels, consonants, and homophones this could be a challenge and
hard for them to sound out each of the letters

this not evidence enough that, within this chaos, my soul was still pure at its very basis? (pause) However,

Every month about 3.9 trillion gallons of water is consumed by the United States alone stated The Water
Information Program. Water conservation is when you use water efficiently and avoid waste. Our water supply
is restricted which means we don t have an endless supply. The Earth only has 3% of fresh water and we only
have access to about 1% of it. We currently have an increasing population which makes it more important than
ever to conserve our water supply. Most of the water we have access to is either wasted or polluted. We need to
take action to help conserve the water we use today! Water is the most important substance to sustain human
life. Water makes up to 60 percent of the human body. We can survive roughly up to 7 8 days without water. It
is important to conserve water because it minimizes the effects of water shortages during droughts, water
sustains human life, it helps preserve our environment, and it saves money. Conserving water helps minimize
the effects of water shortages during droughts. Even though water eventually returns back to the Earth, it
doesn t always return to the same spot. When an area doesn t get the water it needs, a drought occurs. A
drought occurs when there is a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall; resulting in water shortages.
Droughts also cause food shortages because when a drought takes place crops can t grow due to the lack of
water. Droughts can cause major damages and some areas can t recover. Conserving water can

Analysis Of Foxy s U.s. Expansion Essay
Our report examined Foxy s U.S. expansion, which is occurring due to oversaturation in Canada, and whether
it should be executed by use of a trade show distribution strategy with high fixed costs, or a sales
representative distribution strategy with low fixed costs.
With trade shows, the two founders will be able to show their own energy and passion for their work, while
networking with relevant American industry leaders. However, they would be competing for attention with
thousands of other booths, making it essential to capture the attention of retailers. Furthermore, the time
commitment to trade shows could dilute the attention they pay to their Canadian Foxy brand. Sales
representatives would have an easier time entering the market which could lead to quicker profits. While it
would initially be less of a time commitment to hire sales representatives, it would remain an ongoing
commitment to monitor the representatives and find new representatives if necessary. The high fixed cost
nature of trade shows will make it more difficult for Foxy to break even. However, this will ensure a higher
contribution margin which could leads to larger profits after breaking even. This, combatted with a wider
variation of potential orders, leads to an unpredictable operating income that could easily exceed Foxy s goals
or miss it by a lot. This strategy would involve a higher operating leverage, which would enable Foxy to see a
larger increase in profit as sales increase. Conversely, the

The Case Study On Leanne It
After reading the case study on Leanne it is quite easy to highlight where her stress may be coming from.
Leanne is a single mum to three youngsters that all deliver some sort of learning difficulty or additional needs.
Since the birth of her youngest son Luke, who was born with cerebral palsy, Leanne s life has changed
dramatically. The birth of a child to any parent can be traumatic, but to have a difficult labour, resulting in a
child having a disability, is challenging in more than one way. Since the birth of Luke, Leanne s stress seems
to have gone from bad to worse. Leanne left her job to look after her disable son Luke, meaning she no longer

If you score 150 300 units, this implies you have a 50% chance of suffering from a major breakdown in the
next 2 years and anything over 300 raises the odds to about 80% (Holmes and Rahe, 1967). In retrospect to
Leanne, I have only so far mentioned a few of the stressful life events that are occurring and if I was to add up
her units with just these few events, she would be scoring 65 units for a marital separation, 44 units for a major
change in the health or behaviour of a family member, 18 units for major change in social activities. 29 for
major changes in work and 38 in major changes in financial state. These alone without all her other problems
and issues add up to 194 units; meaning per Holmes Rahe model, she is more likely to have a breakdown in
the next 2 years. Even though the SRRS does not take into consideration the individual differences in this
model and the data does not prove that stress causes illness, therefore we cannot say that life changes cause
illness. However, there appears to be a relationship between life changes and illness; consequently, giving you
an insight into just how stressful Leanne s life is. Additionally, Leanne is also facing daily hassles in her life.
Research shows that daily hassles affect our long term health and mood and may take more of a toll on our
health than even major life events, like bereavement; due to the frequency of the stressors occurring. Leanne is

Analysis Of Floating Sweet Dumpling
Nowadays, not just Vietnameses, but many people in the world live in a democratic, equal society where
people enjoy all the freedoms and happiness, where is no war, no oppression, no injustice, or no
discrimination. It is a life that all of people always wish. But it is a luxury in ancient feudal society, especially
for Vietnamese women. They aspired to equality, aspired to self control but it is unrealistic dream and never
comes true. That is more evident in Xuan Huong Ho s poem Floating Sweet Dumpling highlighting the fate
and the miserable image of ancient feudal Vietnamese women.
Xuan Huong Ho was born in 1772 and passed away in 1822, is one of Vietnam s greatest classical poets and
was dubbed The Vietnamese Queen of Nom poetry by a Vietnamese prominent modern poet Xuan Dieu; she
also married as early as all feudal daughters twice, but both of her marriages were not perfect ( Hồ Xuân
Hương ). Perhaps the poet wrote this poem inspired by her own life.
Instead of describing in lengthy writing, with only four verses, all the implications that the poet wanted to
express were reflected in this stanza. The poem is neither too long for the poet to use too many words nor too
short for the readers cannot understand all the content of the poem. The poem has just only four verses but
makes the readers both read and ponder deeply. The poet borrowed image of the dumpling to express the
condition and the heart of the ancient women. Therefore, dumpling is an image of inspiration

Baby Activity Gym Essay
A Baby activity gym is also known as a baby activity mat. This helps explain exactly what it is. Usually, a
baby s activity gym is a mat lying flat on the floor. Your baby lies on his back and has a variety of toys around
him. or hanging over it or placing it around it. Some toys are removable while others are not.
A baby activity gym is applied as a tool to stimulate your child s senses. All the time, helping to teach your
baby to turn around on his stomach. Therefore, the mat can also be used for upside down time.
How To Select The Best Baby Activity Gym

You re wrong. Be careful to read the box before you buy. Some activity gyms for babies are technically
pillows or wedges. This type of mats is used simply to hold your baby.
The goal of an activity gym is that your baby can develop sensory movement and abilities. If they are
positioned by a device and cannot move, this thwarts the real purpose.
Visually appealing
Babies are colorblind when they are born and can only see objects up close. However, baby mats are ideal for
babies to develop their skills until they learn to crawl. Once they crawl, you can put them on the mat, and they
will be off and roaming in a few minutes. Therefore, as your baby wears the play mat, it must be visually
appealing to your baby so it will attract your attention. This promotes movement and aid in development.
All babies love mirrors. They like to look at themselves or think they see another baby.
Many activity gyms include lights that easily attract baby s attention. Make sure they don t have dancing lights

Analysis Of Wanderer Above A Sea Of Fog
With or without knowing it, you are connecting with the artist every time you look at a piece of their artwork.
This is the artists goal; to make you feel emotion and share a message. Caspar David Friederich uses his
painting to evoke certain emotions in his viewers. Born 1774 in Germany during the Romantic period,
Friederich s art shows deep emotion through many techniques. In his painting, Wanderer Above a Sea of Fog,
Friedrich creates a calm, peaceful and reflective mood through his use of light, color, composition, lines, shape
and space. All of these artistic technical elements work together to put an emphasis on self reflection in this
painting.
The use of light and color by Friedrich contributed to the calm and peaceful mood which is created. The main
source of light in this painting comes from below the man and the rocks he is standing on. There is no visible
sun in the sky and it is most likely behind the clouds. The light from below the rock illuminates the air around
the man, directing your focus to him and his calm stance. The fact that the main light source from the painting
is below him could represent the man s past and how he is reflecting on it while he is standing here looking out
at the landscape. There is very little darkness in the painting, and this contributes to the peace of the painting
because everything has the same level of light. It shows a sense of evenness and calmness in the landscape.
This evenness is also displayed through the colors

The Repercussions Of Ignorance In The Chrysalids By John...
The Repercussions of Ignorance Martin Luther King said, Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than
sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity (Bell). The Chrysalids by John Wyndham is set in the future
after an apocalyptic event known as Tribulation, causing a lack of knowledge of the past. The main
community, Waknuk, is prejudiced and ignorant. The narrator, David, recalls the unfolding of the dangerous
predicament caused by his society s ignorance. In this novel, the author presents that ignorance results in
adversity and ultimately, a society s downfall. The Waknukians ignorance creates a hostile environment,
causes disagreement, and is the agent of their own defeat.
The Waknukians ignorance leads to their abomination of Mutants, creating a very hostile environment. Their
ignorance and lack of knowledge cause them to rely on the only remains of the Old People and are used for
direction in their lives. When speaking of Nicholson s Repentances David says, Frequent references to these
texts had made me familiar with the words long before I was able to read, in fact I am not sure that they did
not give me my first reading lessons. I knew them by heart, just as I knew others elsewhere in the house,
which said things like: THE NORM IS THE WILL OF GOD (18). This represents the environment that the
Waknukians are exposed to early in life, and this is evident when David says that he was familiar with the
words long before [he] was able to read. It shows how significant these morals are to the Waknukians, and
how in the absence of knowledge, they preach the only things that they know. This creates an image from a
young age of what Mutants are like and creates a hostile and antagonistic society. The people of Waknuk are
very vigilant because of their upbringing, and what they have been taught is right. David says, People in our
district had a very sharp eye for the odd, or the unusual, so that even my left handedness caused slight
disapproval (5). This is important because it gives insight into the Waknukians views and opinions, and the
mentality of Waknuk becomes clear. It ties into the communities ignorance because they act this way out of
scarcity of any other options. They are taught that

The desire to control alcohol consumption, or advocate temperance, has been a goal of humanity throughout
countless periods of history. Many countries have had organized temperance movements, including Australia,
Canada, Britain, Denmark, Poland, and of course, the United States. The American temperance movement was
the most widespread reform movement of the 19th century, culminating in laws that completely banned the
sale of all alcoholic beverages. The movement progressed from its humble local roots to nationwide
organizations with millions of members and large amounts of political power. The growth of the temperance

This creation of a strong domestic market involved extension of trade links between communities that were
previously not joined. The production of domestic goods increased while the price of the goods decreased,
allowing urban growth and specialization among manufacturers. During this time, a division formed between
men and women, where men s work moved away from home while women s became fixed there. A new
society was formed after the Revolutionary War, and the norms of colonial America soon became a thing of
the past. Consumption of alcohol changed greatly after the war as well. Whiskey became the America s
favorite liquor, and a deeply valued trade item. It was efficient to make, saved materials, and cheap for people
to buy. Whiskey was suddenly being consumed in record amounts, and was even used to instead of water and
milk in cities, where the water was often polluted and the milk expensive (Blocker 9). Drinking changed in
ways other than higher consumption rates and cheaper whisky in cities. Whereas in the colonies drinking took
place in community situations, in the cities drinking often took place outside the home. It was no longer being
produced by families but had to be purchased with money that can ultimately hurt the family. People began
drinking more in informal individual situations instead of closely tied community events, creating hostility

Semi-Structured Interview Essay
Interviews are conversations which will take place between the researcher and interviewee, with the researcher
being the one who asks the questions for the interviewee to answer (Lambert, 2012, p104). For my small scale
project, I have decided that I will carry out semi structured interviews with those who work in the education
sector of the Castle Museum to find out what they do and how they promote children s learning.
I think a semi structured interview will be good for my own research project as I will have a set structure of

This style of interview will allow room to cover issues in depth if needed, and will give me the opportunity to

reliability of the data, as it enables the interviewer to clarify with the respondent any words or phrases that
they may not fully understand (Barriball and While ,1994, p331). Semi structured interviews gives the
interviewer the chance to be flexible in what they want to ask their participant by not having to follow any

Lambert argues that there are disadvantages to using semi structured interview, as the interviewee may go onto

well as this, as semi structured interview allows freedom for further questions, this could result to important

Article Review On Online Gambling Legalization
Article 5 Is Donald Trump key to US online gambling legalisation?
He spent years discussing his presidential aspirations, even once saying that he would fund former Minnesota
Governor and ex professional wrestler Jesse Ventura s campaign should he ever want to run for the top spot.
But now it seems that Donald Trump is backing up the talk by putting his name on the ballot paper and
running for president. While his chances of reaching the White House are slim at best, it has given the
outspoken businessman and TV star a new platform to air his views. The Republican Party is fighting tooth

This makes the online gambling field a great source of profit for Trump, which is probably why it has become
a hot talking point within not only his campaign but throughout online casino portals around the world.
It seems great that Trump has made the issue of online gambling legislation so prominent, but it could possibly
prove to be negative in many ways. Trump is a man known for his abrasive and controversial personality,
giving him the reputation of being explosive from a political standpoint. There are some who believe that by
behaving in the way he does that he is actually hindering the chances of online gambling ever being legalized
in the United States. This is because there is every chance that because of his nature many will oppose simply
out of dislike of Trump simply to make a point. It isn t just that either, Sheldon Adelson, a fellow gambling
mogul, but one that opposes online gambling, could look to ramp up his anti online gambling efforts simply to
give Trump more to deal with during his campaign.
Whichever way you look at situation, Donald Trump could very way play a key role in how the online casino
legalisation story unfolds in the United States. Should his presidential campaign gather real momentum,
whether he makes it into office or not, he will have an increased influence from a political standpoint moving
forward. However, should his campaign truly fall flat, then there is every chance that objectors will be able to

Summary Of The Book Collapse By Jared Diamond
Collapse Book Review
In Collapse, Jared Diamond explores the demise of different civilizations throughout history and the signs that
might portend for today s societies. The most evident and recurring themes are: climate change, environmental
damage, friendly trade partners and hostile neighbors. Whether it is one or multiple of these factors that causes
a society s collapse, these four points of Diamond s suggested five point framework are consistently relevant
to the collapse of a society. Diamond thoroughly examines the history of collapses of civilizations ranging
from the Mayan Empire to modern China. Throughout the book Diamond works to answer the question, Why
is it that some societies collapsed while others did not collapse? The following themes, discussed by Jared
Diamond as the main factors in a civilization s success or failure, are explored and explained in the past to
provide a better outlook on the status of our future: environmental damage, climate change, and neighbors
including trade partners.

How does money make us happy? Money is, for most people, an emotive, complicated subject. We all have
different beliefs, motivations, emotions and preferences, which can make our relationship with it difficult.
Money also influences how we view ourselves and can affect our feelings of self esteem, control and security.
So the question does money make us happy is somewhat more complex than just any plain answer due to
different varieties of what makes people happy.
What does our brain do when it s happy and how can we use money to boost the effect? When you understand
what s going on in your brain, you can begin to influence it to your benefit. You can stimulate more happy
chemicals when you know the job they evolved to do and what causes their release for you.Your brain got

Each time your neuro chemicals surged, your brain built connections and is wired now to turn on your brain
chemicals in the same ways they were activated in the past. When you re young, your brain is very changeable
or neuroplastic and neurons build new connections easily. As an adult, it s not as easy to build new circuits to
turn on in new ways and requires a lot of repetition and focus. But it can be done. Your brain is capable of

The Importance Of The Canadian Charter Of Rights And Freedoms
The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is the most recognized part of the Canadian Constitution Act of
1982. Since the enactment, the charter has assured the rights of individuals by preserving those rights in the
highest law of the land. Before the charter of rights was enacted there were several laws that protected the
rights and freedoms of individuals such as the 1960 bill of rights. The bill of rights however lacked the
permanence and supremacy of the charter because it only applied to federal laws rather than provincial laws
and it was not apart of the the Canadian Constitution. Before both the Canadian Charter of Rights and
Freedoms and the Bill of Rights many countries came together including canada, to create the Charter of the
United Nations after both world wars demonstrated that human rights were not inalienable. The objective of
the United Nations was to protect all individual s fundamental human rights and against abuses. Canada not
only signed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it was John Humphrey s, a professor a part of the

Imagery, Diction, And Tone Of Roethke s Root Cellar
A Plant s Bacchanalia:
Imagery, Diction, and Tone in Roethke s Root Cellar
How can an atmosphere be so unbearable and cold, but evidently full of life and constant growth? Set in an
old, decaying basement, Theodore Roethke addresses this in the poem Root Cellar. Life is clinging to and
climbing over the dirty, damp, and dark possessions of the cellar. Why is it possible that so much life is present
in such a place of shadows? In Root Cellar , Roethke uses imagery, diction, and tone to display that is possible
for life to overcome unbearable circumstances suggesting that nature is a truly dominant and powerful force.
First, Roethke uses a variety of natural imagery to illustrate the poor conditions of the root cellar. The imagery
is extremely concrete, which is illustrated through the use of sensory language. By being inside the cellar,
multiple senses are engaged, which ranges from smells, sights, and surfaces to touch. Roethke writes that there
were a congress of stinks (6) and then proceeds to explain them as roots ripe as old bait (7) and leaf mold,
manure, lime (9); the sensory imagery here reveals that the root cellar is not only unpleasant to the eye, but the
nose as well. Additionally, sensory imagery, such as the phrase slippery planks (9) reveals that one might not
want to get too close to the scene. However poor the sensory experience may be for a human, life is persisting
for the plants regardless. The plants are able to strive and continue to grow

Mexico s economy has expanded and Mexico is a signatory to major deals, such as North American Free Trade Agreement and Trans Pacific Partnership. Additionally, Mexico is a member of the Organisation for Economic Cooper and Development (OECD). Mexico is an active o member of the world s economy. It is important to realize that the country has made significant economic progress. However, Mexico faces trouble as it attempts to become a developed economy. In this paper, I will outline the economic history of Mexico and its transition towards neoliberalism from import substitution and how the government plays a smaller role in the economy. I will look ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1982, Mexico stopped making its payments, Their debt increased from 16 billion to 86 billion in the years between 1975 and 1982 (Claessens and Wijinbergen 967) First, Mexico s economy showed signs of collapsing after the price of oil dropped due to Iran, an OPEC country, beginning to produce oil again (Watkin paragraph 8). Additionally, interest rates increased due to the fact anti inflationary policies did not work; as a result, interest rates had doubled from twelve percent to twenty four percent (Walkin 7). Suddenly, the country found itself in economic turmoil, because their income from oil had run dry, yet the interest rates from loans skyrocketed. Brady Bonds allowed Mexico to repay their debt. Mexican became weary of the government s economic model because it showed signs of weakness (Camp 120). • 3. Theories Of FIFA According to McMillan and Gandz case study, FIFA has had both the success and its failures with the main issue on the case study been its scandals, which include corruption, bribery, and tax avoidance. Other issues highlighted also include FIFA sponsorship deals, reforms, and unfavorable workers conditions that has contributed to the attitudes of most of the employees . According to the Transparency International, corruption within FIFA might involve referees taking a bribe, clubs demanding kickbacks for player transfers, or companies seeing nPow (need for power) and government rigging the bids for construction contracts. The case study has only mentioned one successful high profile lawsuit concerning FIFA corruption due to the allegation of plausible bribery surrounding the awarding of Russia and Qatar right to host 2018 and 2022 World Cup respectively. Organizational Behaviour Theories and Concepts The FIFA critical issues outlined above do link to the Classical Organizational Behaviour Theory, which rose during the Industrial Revolution. Per this theory, people s motivation to work bases on the physical and economic needs, rather than social needs and job satisfaction. The approach also advocates for specialization of labor, central leadership and decision making, and profit maximization. In the case study, it is apparent that FIFA is driven by the concept of profit maximization without caring of its workers; for example, forced labor in world cup project in Qatar, ... • 4. Anthony Mulcahy Introduction: Swimming upstream is a film directed by Russell Mulcahy which was based in the early 1950 s. The film was produced in 2003 and is based on a boy named Tony Fingleton a young man from a troubled family who found the inner strength to become a champion. Always overshadowed in his father s eyes by his brothers. The only way Tony feels about winning his father s heart is by his extraordinary swimming talent. Tony and his father (Harold snr) have a very unhealthy relationship as Tony struggled to get his father s approval or even be an applaud for doing something good in his life. The purpose of my film was to tell my audience about a boy who enjoyed playing the piano, reading books and being successful at school. While trying to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This has made the audience feel proud of such a young talented man Tony has turned into who doesn t get much faith and love from his father after trying his hardest to do something right to gain his father s love and blessing. Russell has developed the character of Tony by expressing his problems with his father throughout the film from Harold Snr disliking him playing the piano to getting beaten but by his older brother Harold Jnr to then achieving something but still not getting any type of applaud from his father. Harold Snr then separated Tony from his brother/best friend John when it came to swimming practice which pulled Tony and John further away from each other as they were both each other s support when it came to competition shown in the scene where Tony was looking around for John to do their handshake they did before every race which then made him not perform to his best and made him loose to his brother. Tony then went further in his swimming as he was very talented. As Tony went to say goodbye to his father before heading off to Harvard university Harold Snr didn t have an interest in saying goodbye he basically just shrugged him off, Tony didn t know what to do as he had tried everything to just get his father to love him for who he was and what he achieves. This developed Tony into more of a stronger hearted boy who grew up to be a champion in the rest of his families eyes especially ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Manet And The Object Of Painting By Michel Foucault Edouard Manet, an artist most commonly known in relation to the advent of modernist art, is credited with introducing such painterly techniques as producing flatness in painting, and, a layering down of hues (alla prima). He is regarded as the father of modernité, having many written works have been produced as supplements, responses or studies of his paintings and influences in art three of which I present as subjects of scrutiny in this paper: the Painter of Modern Life by French poet and essayist Charles Baudelaire, who produced several essays in relation to the phenomenon of modernity (as both modulator and interpreter) Manet and the Object of Painting by Michel Foucault, a French philosopher and critic, and Modernist Painting by Clement Greenberg, a mid 20th century art critic. In each of these respective pieces, I will be analyzing closely the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They differ in terms of length, structure, style and method of evocation. Baudelaire resorts to sub heading sectioning, dividing his thoughts under twelve primary pillars, starting with I. Beauty, Fashion and Happiness. Using such large, overbearing words and then breaking them down into observational, almost ethnographical paragraphs where he describes behaviors, views and examples in relation to his larger claims. In Foucault s Manet and the Object of Painting, the structural form differs, as the text was originally a 1971 lecture given in Tunisia alongside a series of other lectures he delivered in Milan, Tokyo, and Florence. Thus, what we find is a slightly tweaked, translated transcription of the talk. Greenberg s Modernist Painting, however slightly shorter than the two texts, reads clearly and is structured starting from a broad articulation of modernism that is then rationed into specific claims or takes, enveloped in critical reflections upon artistic practice as well as philosophy of the phenomenon similar to Baudelaire s ... • 6. Greek Alphabet Many scholars have yet to prove the origin of Greek alphabet. However, one fact is for certain: the origin of Greek alphabet does not mean the origin of the writing system to the Greek language. Not a completely new invention, the Greek alphabet is undoubtedly from a script that the Semitic peoples of Levantine coast used. Originally fashioned by ethnic Phoenician groups, the source alphabet is connected to the Ugaritic groups of writing systems that developed around the city of Ugarit (Powell 2009: 230). Nevertheless, the source alphabet and the Greek alphabet work differently as the Greek alphabet had specific signs for vowels that Phoenicians did not. Hence, regarding such differences and the adaptations of the original source ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, due to the earliest alphabetic inscription from Gabii being dated to 775 and no other inscriptions yet discovered before the eighth century, such argument to push the date is diminishing, though not completely eliminated (Powell 2009: 236). In historical terms, with contacts between the Aegean and the outside world growing during the eighth century and evidence for Phoenician settlers in the Aegean and Greeks in northern Syria, it is most probable that the origin of Greek alphabet is from the early eighth century BC. In addition to the how, where, and when of this alphabet s origin, the reason for its invention is also vague. Moreover, according to Wilson, this question of why the Greeks adopted and adapted the north west Semitic script has received relatively little scholarly attention (Wilson 2009: 548). Though theories of mercantile and poetic origins exist, these theories still pose problems and other explanations such as for ownership denotation have been offered that need to be further studied. Hence, this research project intends to undertake the step to investigate the ownership theory as an explanation for why the Greeks adopted and adapted the alphabet of the Phoenicians. Hence, it is essential to understand the problems that the existing knowledge of the reason the monetary and poetic origins generates. The monetary origin begins ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Erik studied art and a variety of languages during his school years, rather than science courses such as biology and chemistry. Going beyond the of a child s early life, Erikson concentrated on broader issues of peer culture, school environment, and cultural values and ideals. This led him to study the period of adolescence, in which he documented the interaction of a person s inner feelings and impulses with the world that surrounds the person. These two completely different worlds were what drew these two young girls to each other (Bukisa). They were opposite in more than just their upbringing. Sula was rougher and tougher than Nel was, but her emotions were also inconsistent. Nel, on the other hand, was quiet, and normally had a steady emotion (Bukisa). It was as if these two girls were each one half of the same whole, making them inseparable. During their childhood, they shared everything, including boyfriends. All of these factores contributed to Sula s personality and actions as an adult. Sula as an adult had problems with love, recognizing boundaries, and fitting in. • 14. Triumph Des Willens Film Analysis Triumph des Willens Film Review Triumph des Willens (Triumph of the Will) is a film directed by Leni Riefenstahl that was commissioned by Adolf Hitler. The film details events around the 1934 Nuremberg Congress, the people who were in the rally and how they responded to it. Triumph is fundamentally a pro Hitler film that was meant to be a documentary that records history as it happened (Barsam 1975, p12). In essence though it was a propaganda film meant to unite Germany under Hitler s regime. As in any good propaganda film Triumph focused on portraying the good points of the Nazis and not a single negative point was seen about them in the film. Hitler knew that for the film to be a success as a propaganda film showcasing too much of a political view would cause Triumph to be less successful. That is why he wanted the film to be more artistic and aesthetic. The film itself was described to be aesthetic, not political (Levinson 1998, p237). This did not mean though that the film was not political. Triumph was filmed in a way that it subtly expresses the political views and standpoints of the Nazi party to involve and manipulate the people who were not interested in politics. The main purpose of the film was to garner support for Hitler s regime be they in the form of inspiring people into joining the army, or other supporting assets for Germany such as farmers, miners, fishers or labourers. Techniques in how these were achieved will be discussed in this review as well as its reception both domestically and internationally. There were various techniques used in the films in order to catch the intended audience and manipulate the German people into believing and helping Hitler s cause. An example of this is how in Hitler s speeches he made no clear distinction between Germany, its people and the Nazi Party. This leads to people being indoctrinated into believing that the Nazi Party was synonymous with Germany. Another technique used were the scenes in the films about the military. To be specific the scenes showcasing the military camps. In these scenes the personnel were having fun and bonding through activities such as wrestling, having fun while taking a bath and other activities backed up with a soundtrack ... It is perfectly ok to go through this method many times, just to make sure each student is comprehending and grasping what you are trying to teach. To teach this lesson, a teacher should have the word they are going to introduce on a notecard that the students will eventually, be able to read, spell, and write out. With trade shows, the two founders will be able to show their own energy and passion for their work, while networking with relevant American industry leaders. However, they would be competing for attention with thousands of other booths, making it essential to capture the attention of retailers. Sales representatives would have an easier time entering the market which could lead to quicker profits. While it would initially be less of a time commitment to hire sales representatives, it would remain an ongoing commitment to monitor the representatives and find new representatives if necessary. The high fixed cost nature of trade shows will make it more difficult for Foxy to break even. However, baby mats are ideal for babies to develop their skills until they learn to crawl. Once they crawl, you can put them on the mat, and they will be off and roaming in a few minutes. Therefore, as your baby wears the play mat, it must be visually appealing to your baby so it will attract your attention. This promotes movement and aid in development. All babies love mirrors. • 27. Analysis Of Wanderer Above A Sea Of Fog With or without knowing it, you are connecting with the artist every time you look at a piece of their artwork. This is the artists goal; to make you feel emotion and share a message. Caspar David Friederich uses his painting to evoke certain emotions in his viewers. Born 1774 in Germany during the Romantic period, Friederich s art shows deep emotion through many techniques. In his painting, Wanderer Above a Sea of Fog, Friedrich creates a calm, peaceful and reflective mood through his use of light, color, composition, lines, shape and space. All of these artistic technical elements work together to put an emphasis on self reflection in this painting. The use of light and color by Friedrich contributed to the calm and peaceful mood which is created. The main source of light in this painting comes from below the man and the rocks he is standing on. There is no visible sun in the sky and it is most likely behind the clouds. The light from below the rock illuminates the air around the man, directing your focus to him and his calm stance. The fact that the main light source from the painting is below him could represent the man s past and how he is reflecting on it while he is standing here looking out at the landscape. There is very little darkness in the painting, and this contributes to the peace of the painting because everything has the same level of light. It shows a sense of evenness and calmness in the landscape. This evenness is also displayed through the colors ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. The Repercussions Of Ignorance In The Chrysalids By John... The Repercussions of Ignorance Martin Luther King said, Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity (Bell). The Chrysalids by John Wyndham is set in the future after an apocalyptic event known as Tribulation, causing a lack of knowledge of the past. The main community, Waknuk, is prejudiced and ignorant. The narrator, David, recalls the unfolding of the dangerous predicament caused by his society s ignorance. In this novel, the author presents that ignorance results in adversity and ultimately, a society s downfall. The Waknukians ignorance creates a hostile environment, causes disagreement, and is the agent of their own defeat. The Waknukians ignorance leads to their abomination of Mutants, creating a very hostile environment. Their ignorance and lack of knowledge cause them to rely on the only remains of the Old People and are used for direction in their lives. When speaking of Nicholson s Repentances David says, Frequent references to these texts had made me familiar with the words long before I was able to read, in fact I am not sure that they did not give me my first reading lessons. I knew them by heart, just as I knew others elsewhere in the house, which said things like: THE NORM IS THE WILL OF GOD (18). This represents the environment that the Waknukians are exposed to early in life, and this is evident when David says that he was familiar with the words long before [he] was able to read. It shows how significant these morals are to the Waknukians, and how in the absence of knowledge, they preach the only things that they know. This creates an image from a young age of what Mutants are like and creates a hostile and antagonistic society. The people of Waknuk are very vigilant because of their upbringing, and what they have been taught is right. David says, People in our district had a very sharp eye for the odd, or the unusual, so that even my left handedness caused slight disapproval (5). This is important because it gives insight into the Waknukians views and opinions, and the mentality of Waknuk becomes clear. It ties into the communities ignorance because they act this way out of scarcity of any other options. They are taught that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many countries have had organized temperance movements, including Australia, Canada, Britain, Denmark, Poland, and of course, the United States. The American temperance movement was the most widespread reform movement of the 19th century, culminating in laws that completely banned the sale of all alcoholic beverages. The movement progressed from its humble local roots to nationwide organizations with millions of members and large amounts of political power. This creation of a strong domestic market involved extension of trade links between communities that were previously not joined. The production of domestic goods increased while the price of the goods decreased, allowing urban growth and specialization among manufacturers. During this time, a division formed between men and women, where men s work moved away from home while women s became fixed there. A new society was formed after the Revolutionary War, and the norms of colonial America soon became a thing of the past. Consumption of alcohol changed greatly after the war as well. Whiskey became the America s favorite liquor, and a deeply valued trade item. It was efficient to make, saved materials, and cheap for people to buy. Whiskey was suddenly being consumed in record amounts, and was even used to instead of water and milk in cities, where the water was often polluted and the milk expensive (Blocker 9). Drinking changed in ways other than higher consumption rates and cheaper whisky in cities. Whereas in the colonies drinking took place in community situations, in the cities drinking often took place outside the home. It was no longer being produced by families but had to be purchased with money that can ultimately hurt the family. People began drinking more in informal individual situations instead of closely tied community events, creating hostility ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Semi-Structured Interview Essay Interviews are conversations which will take place between the researcher and interviewee, with the researcher being the one who asks the questions for the interviewee to answer (Lambert, 2012, p104). For my small scale project, I have decided that I will carry out semi structured interviews with those who work in the education sector of the Castle Museum to find out what they do and how they promote children s learning. I think a semi structured interview will be good for my own research project as I will have a set structure of questions that I would like to discuss. Semi structured interviews gives the interviewer the chance to be flexible in what they want to ask their participant by not having to follow any specific order. Lambert argues that there are disadvantages to using semi structured interview, as the interviewee may go onto another topic without realizing, resulting to this style of interview being hard to keep on track (2012, p105). The most evident and recurring themes are: climate change, environmental damage, friendly trade partners and hostile neighbors. Whether it is one or multiple of these factors that causes a society s collapse, these four points of Diamond s suggested five point framework are consistently relevant to the collapse of a society. Diamond thoroughly examines the history of collapses of civilizations ranging from the Mayan Empire to modern China. Throughout the book Diamond works to answer the question, Why is it that some societies collapsed while others did not collapse? Imagery, Diction, And Tone Of Roethke s Root Cellar A Plant s Bacchanalia: Imagery, Diction, and Tone in Roethke s Root Cellar How can an atmosphere be so unbearable and cold, but evidently full of life and constant growth? Set in an old, decaying basement, Theodore Roethke addresses this in the poem Root Cellar. Life is clinging to and climbing over the dirty, damp, and dark possessions of the cellar. Why is it possible that so much life is present in such a place of shadows? In Root Cellar , Roethke uses imagery, diction, and tone to display that is possible for life to overcome unbearable circumstances suggesting that nature is a truly dominant and powerful force. First, Roethke uses a variety of natural imagery to illustrate the poor conditions of the root cellar. The imagery is extremely concrete, which is illustrated through the use of sensory language. By being inside the cellar, multiple senses are engaged, which ranges from smells, sights, and surfaces to touch. Roethke writes that there were a congress of stinks (6) and then proceeds to explain them as roots ripe as old bait (7) and leaf mold, manure, lime (9); the sensory imagery here reveals that the root cellar is not only unpleasant to the eye, but the nose as well. Additionally, sensory imagery, such as the phrase slippery planks (9) reveals that one might not want to get too close to the scene. However poor the sensory experience may be for a human, life is persisting for the plants regardless. The plants are able to strive and continue to grow ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
