Presentation given at Big Apple Scrum Day 2015 on advanced metrics for agile and scrum teams. It is recommended that teams track a few metrics for each of the 5 categories outlined in the presentation to be able to assess the impact of activities supportive of continuous improvement. The presentation includes over 30 metrics to give teams ideas on what they can measure. There isn’t a requirement to track 30 metrics on a scrum or agile team but rather teams should track just enough metrics to be able to understand their performance.

Seven Key Metrics to Improve Agile PerformanceTechWell
It’s been said: If you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it. For most agile teams burndown charts and some type of velocity measurement are all they are doing. However, with just a few more metrics, you can gain substantial insight into how teams are performing and identify improvement opportunities. Andrew Graves explores seven key metrics―Effort by Class of Service, Accuracy of Estimation, Cost per Point, and four others―to measure how your team is doing and make adjustments in real time. Andrew illustrates how to use these metrics to communicate progress to stakeholders. Discover how to use these metrics to identify and analyze trends that lead to performance improvement ideas and strategies. Learn how to use these seven metrics to monitor the impact of changes made to verify they are bringing the hoped-for difference.
The disconnect between the delivery organization and the business is prevalent in the software industry. Somewhere along the line, the real vision behind our projects gets lost. We all know it. Can better metrics help? This session examines some common and not-so-common metrics and introduces Evidence Based Management as a guide for continuously measuring your business goals, aligning them with your software development efforts, and then deciding what to do next.

XBOSoft runs through the Top 10 Agile Metrics revealing the most fundamental data points Agile methodology requires to work effectively, and will put you on the highly targeted path to successful implementation of your Agile processes.
XBOSoft and Go2Group run through the top data points you should be measuring in your Agile Workflow. We’ll show you what to track, when and how often, and most importantly – why. Many believe that metrics are useless, but unless you measure, how can you systematically improve or know how you are doing? And with velocity as an overarching objective in agile, you should be tracking other things so that you know what else you could be impacting by going faster. But, with all the metrics so readily available to us today, how do we filter through to the most meaningful?
We are doing Agile well..We have been Agile now.. Is it just an assumption or do we have data to support it? Do metrics add any value or they are just a fad? Good metrics affirm & reinforce Agile principles. They open up the conversation and help the teams to improve. They are not only for management, it is for everyone who wants to inspect and adapt.
So this presentation is about how metrics can be used effectively in Agile to enable transparency and improve the overall efficiency at the team/ program and portfolio level.
Background of measuring and metric usage is traditional waterfall projects, psychology of measuring, agile response to traditional metrics, and suggested agile metrics.
Patricia Carlin, General Manager ThoughtWorks talks about Metrics versus Diagnostics, Reporting Progress and Providing Visibility. Comparative Agile Measurement System - Ciklum White PaperCiklum Ukraine
Now when Agile software development is becoming very popular globally due to its proven effectiveness in reducing the cycle between idea generation and realization, minimizing risk of project goals’ misunderstanding, decreasing costs of addressing mistakes in software development and so on, many businesses need to monitor own adherence to Agile practices, measure efficiency of their distributed Agile teams, calculate ROI in their Agile Scrum education, etc.
As de facto there are no industry standards for measuring Agile effectiveness, it does not matter how good companies think they are at Agile unless they compare themselves against their peers and competitors.
After several years of consulting with the Agile development and project management gurus and thorough analysis of Agile behavior patterns from more than 80 clients’ own nearshore Agile software development teams, Ciklum has developed an innovative tool to measure Agile effectiveness – the Comparative Agile Measurement System (CAMS).
This framework aims to:
- Gauge productivity of distributed Agile teams in terms of teamwork, planning, knowledge, quality of delivery, technical practices, culture and requirements
- Visualize productivity gaps and detect roots of those gaps
- Develop solutions to improve teams’ productivity based on Agile best practices collected from more than 80 Ciklum Client Own Software Development Teams
This white paper aims to:
- Provide Agile practitioners with insights into the tool's background and application to distributed software development, and
- Demonstrate real-life cases of CAMS usage by such clients as Berlingske Media (Mecom Group) and Intranote

Governing Agile Teams: Disciplined Strategies to Increase Agile EffectivenessTechWell
Many organizations have successfully adopted agile on a subset of their projects, while, at the same time, struggled to do so across entire departments. A common challenge is the need to overhaul the IT governance strategy so that it will work with agile teams. This is a serious issue for governance bodies with little or no practical agile experience, particularly when experience shows that traditional governance strategies increase the risk of failure on agile projects. Scott Ambler introduces The Disciplined Agile Delivery framework for managing and monitoring enterprise agile teams. This framework goes beyond offering an IT governance strategy to provide advanced strategies such as development intelligence and the goal-question-metric measurement approach. Learn the do’s and don’ts of governing agile teams, how governance fits in and enhances the agile project lifecycle, how to measure agile teams, and most importantly, why teams should demand good governance.

What ISO Management Systems can learn from Balanced Scorecard?PECB
Balanced Scorecard is a Strategy Management System developed by Professors Kaplan and Norton. It is probably the most comprehensive system/tool in the modern world. It allows an organization balance its Strategy across 4 perspectives (Financial, Customer, Internal Process and Learning and Growth Perspectives). It further lets an organization break down each of these 4 perspectives based on 4 criteria which are Objectives, Measures, Target and Initiatives. There is a lot that ISO Implementers and Auditors need to learn from a Balanced Scorecard that will help in better delivering ISO engagements. This webinar will take a critical look at what is Balanced Scorecard and what ISO Consultants need to know to about it.
Main points covered:
• What is a Balance Scorecard?
• How Balance Scorecard allows organization to balance its Strategy across 4 perspectives (Financial, Customer, Internal Process and Learning and Growth Perspectives)
• How an organization breaks down each 4 perspective based on 4 criteria (Objectives, Measures, Target and Initiatives)

While traditional performance metrics often measure individual output or adherence to pre-defined plans, measuring performance in agile teams requires a different approach. Agile teams operate in iterative cycles, prioritizing adaptability and learning over rigid goals. So, why do organizations still measure their performance?
By using the right metrics in the right way, organizations can empower their agile teams to thrive and deliver exceptional results.

"Getting started with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE): A guide to improving systems reliability at production"
This is an intro guide to share some of the common concepts of SRE to a non-technical audience. We will look at both technical and organizational changes that should be adopted to increase operational efficiency, ultimately benefiting for global optimizations - such as minimize downtime, improve systems architecture & infrastructure:
- improving incident response
- Defining error budgets
- Better monitoring of systems
- Getting the best out of systems alerting
- Eliminating manual, repetitive actions (toils) by automation
- Designing better on-call shifts/rotations
How to design the role of the Site Reliability Engineer (who effectively works between application development teams and operations support teams)
Anyone who has ever attempted to estimate software testing effort realizes just how difficult the task can be. The number of factors that can affect the estimate is virtually unlimited. The key to good estimates is to understand the primary variables, compare them to known standards, and normalize the estimates based on their differences. This is easy to say but difficult to accomplish because estimates are frequently required even when very little is known about the project and what is known is constantly changing. Throw in a healthy dose of politics and a bit of wishful thinking and estimation can become a nightmare. Rob Sabourin provides a foundation for anyone who must estimate software testing work effort. Learn about the test team’s and tester’s roles in estimation and measurement, and how to estimate in the face of uncertainty. Analysts, developers, leads, test managers, testers, and QA personnel can all benefit from this tutorial.
Game Changing Quality Strategies that Drive Organizational Excellencekushshah
Quality in the past was more related conforming to requirements, in lot of cases as it relates to engineering requirements and not necessarily enthusiastic customer experience. It was a very narrow definition of quality and focused more on Things Gone Wrong. Goal was to reach a level of customer accepted.
Quality definition today is much broader and winning in quality in this highly competitive environment requires deployment game changing quality strategies.
We will discuss how to infuse the voice of the customer into the way we design our products and services so that they exceed customer expectations. Organizations that engage all functions within enterprise and are customer centric will differentiate themselves from the rest of the competition. This presentation will provide an integrated roadmap on how to integrate proactive quality strategies such as Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (DFMEA), Process Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (PFMEA) along with reactive strategies such as Six Sigma and control plans to achieve organizational excellence.

In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.
