Barriers to Effective Communication
1.

gets twisted, there is a “barrier”
or obstacle somewhere in the
process of the transfer of
information from sender to
receiver.
3. INEFFICIENT USE OF LANGUAGE
USING IMPROPER CHANNEL OR
MEDIUM
RECIPIENT FAILED TO
UNDERSTAND
NOISE
5. PHYSICAL BARRIER IN WORKPLACE INCLUDES:
Closed office doors, barriers, screens, and separate
areas for people of different status.
Large working areas or working in one unit that is
physically separate from others e.g. a team of
colleagues who have a different job from another team.
Research shows that one of the most important factors
in building strong working teams is being closely
allocated to others.
6. The easiest way to overcome a Physical Barrier
is to get around it.
Closed office doors; open them.
Separate working locations; walk to the other
one.
7. A) PSYCHOLOGICAL BLOCK
B) PEOPLE PERCEIVE THINGS

PRECISE
8. FOR EXAMPLE IMAGINE THIS SCENE: A FATHER AND HIS
SON ARE DRIVING TO WORK ONE MORNING WHEN
SUDDENLY THEY’RE INVOLVED IN A TERRIBLE CAR
CRASH. THE FATHER IS KILLED INSTANTLY AND THE SON
IS BADLY HURT. AN AMBULANCE RUSHES THE SON TO A
HOSPITAL. IN THE ADMITTING ROOM THE NURSE SAYS
"WE HAVE GOT TO TAKE HIM STRAIGHT INTO SURGERY
OR HE MAY DIE". THEY RUSH HIM DOWN THE HALL TO
SURGERY. THE SURGEON WALKS IN TAKES ONE LOOK AT
THE BOY AND SAYS "I CAN’T OPERATE ON HIM. HE’S MY
SON". HOW CAN THIS BE? STUDENTS COME UP WITH
ALL KINDS OF INGENIOUS ANSWERS. THE FATHER IS A
PRIEST, THE SON WAS ADOPTED. THE CORRECT ANSWER
IS THAT THE SURGEON WAS THE BOY’S MOTHER. MANY
PEOPLE DON’T THINK OF THIS ANSWER BECAUSE THEIR
EXPERIENCES HAVE CONVINCED THEM THAT SURGEONS
ARE MALE. PRECEPTUAL PROBLEM IS THAT PEOPLE’S
PERCEPTION ARE BASED ON THEIR OWN EXPERIENCES.
