This document provides guidance on proper bandaging techniques and uses of bandages. It describes how to bandage wounds on different parts of the body including the head, chest, hand, arm, under arm, cheek/ear, elbow, and knee. Key steps are outlined for each type of bandage. The document also defines a splint as a device used to support or immobilize broken bones, and describes types of fractures as either open (bone breaks through skin) or closed (bone breaks but no open wound). First aid recommendations are given for applying splints.

2. BANDAGING
• Applying pressure to bleeding wounds.
• Covering wounds and burns
• Providing support and immobilization for
broken bones, sprains and strains.
THREE KEY USES OF BANDAGES;

3. Head Top (for head injuries)
• Fold the base atleast 2-3”
• Place the folded base align with
eyebrow
• pull back and cross-over at the back,
tucking apex beneath
• Pull both ends in front / secure with a
square knot at the center of the folded
base / tuck ends
• Pull down apex tuck sides neatly

4. Chest Bandage
• Apex at the shoulder of the injured
part
• Pull back folded base and secure
with square knot at the center
indention of the back
• Knot tie longer with apex

5. Hand Bandage
• Place the hand in the middle of the
triangular bandage with the wrist at the base
• Place the apex over the fingers and tuck
any excess material into the pleats of each
side of the hand
• Cross the end at the top the hand, take
them around the wrist and tie them with the
square knot.

6. Arm Sling
• Place folded base vertically over
• One arm, with pointed directly under the
elbow of injured arm
• Lower ends of base at the side of the neck
using square knot
• Make several twist with apex and tie a knot
• Hide the Knot

7. Under Arm Sling
• Same procedure as arm sling, except
that the lower end is tucked under the
injured arm
• Secure end of base and apex with a
square knot the center indention at the
back.

8. Cravat Bandage for the
Cheek or Ears
• Use the wide cravat. Start with the
middle of the cravat over the compress
covering the cheek or the ear
• Carry one end over at the top of the
head and the other under the chin
• Cross the ends at the opposite side
• Bring the short end back around the
forehead and the long end at the back of
the head
• Tie them down over the compress

9. Cravat for the Elbow
• Bend arm at elbow and place center of
cravat at point of elbow
• Bring ends up and across each other
in over lapping spiral turns. Continue one
end up arm and the other end down
forearm
• Bring ends to front of elbow and tie

10. Cravat for the Knee
• Start on top of the knees
• Cross over and twist 2-3 times under
the knee
• Cross over on top / pull ends to
opposite sides
• Secure with a square knot under the
knee

11. Shoulder Armpit Cravat
• Start at the armpit
• Cross-over at injured shoulder
• Tie at the opposite armpit (side of
front)

12. SPLINT:
A splint is a device used for support or
immobilization of potentially broken bones
or damage joints and can be used in
multiple situations.

13. FRACTURE
A fracture is the separation of an
object or material into two or more pieces
under the action of stress.
The severity of a fracture depends upon its
location and the damage done to the bone
and tissue near it.

14. TYPES :
Open Fracture
- An open fracture is one
in which the bone breaks through
the skin. but it may then recede
back into the wound and may not
be visible through the skin.
Close Fracture
- A closed fracture is
when the bone breaks but
there is no puncture or open
wound in the skin

• Wide enough
• Best applied over the clothing
• well padded
• raise the injured part
