OSDC 2016 - Interesting things you can do with ZFS by Allan Jude&Benedict Reu...NETWAYS
ZFS is the next generation filesystem originally developed at Sun Microsystems. Available under the CDDL, it uniquely combines volume manager and filesystem into a powerful storage management solution for Unix systems. Regardless of big or small storage requirements. ZFS offers features, for free, that are usually found only in costly enterprise storage solutions. This talk will introduce ZFS and give an overview of its features like snapshots and rollback, compression, deduplication as well as replication. We will demonstrate how these features can make a difference in the datacenter, giving administrators the power and flexibility to adapt to changing storage requirements.
Real world examples of ZFS being used in production for video streaming, virtualization, archival, and research are shown to illustrate the concepts. The talk is intended for people considering ZFS for their data storage needs and those who are interested in the features ZFS provides.
A duplicate (clone or snapshot) database is useful for a variety of purposes, most of which involve testing &
upgrade
• You can perform the following tasks in a duplicate database:
• Test backup and recovery procedures
• Test an upgrade to a new release of Oracle Database
• Test the effect of applications on database performance
• Create a standby database (Dataguard) with DG Broker
• Leverage on Transient Logical Standby to perform an upgrade
• Generate reports
With tens of thousands of Java servers running in production in enterprise, Java has become a language of choice for building production systems. If our machines are to exhibit acceptable performance, they require regular tuning.This talk takes a detailed look at techniques for tuning a Java Server.
While probably the most prominent, Docker is not the only tool for building and managing containers. Originally meant to be a "chroot on steroids" to help debug systemd, systemd-nspawn provides a fairly uncomplicated approach to work with containers. Being part of systemd, it is available on most recent distributions out-of-the-box and requires no additional dependencies.
This deck will introduce a few concepts involved in containers and will guide you through the steps of building a container from scratch. The payload will be a simple service, which will be automatically activated by systemd when the first request arrives.
Scaleable PHP Applications in KubernetesRobert Lemke
Kubernetes is also called the "distributed Linux of the cloud" – which implies that it provides fundamental infrastructure, which can solve a lot of challenges. Let’s see how PHP applications fit into this picture. In this presentation, we are going to explore when Kubernetes is a good fit for operating your PHP application and how it can be done in practice. We’ll look at the whole lifecycle: how to build your application, create or choose the right Docker images, deploy and scale, and how to deal with performance and monitoring. At the end you will have a good understanding about all the different stages and building blocks for running a PHP application with Kubernetes in production.
beyondfs is distributed-file system, like hdfs, glusterfs, ceph.

Web browsers have become part of everyday life, and are relied upon by millions of internet citizens each day. The feature rich online world has turned the once simple web browser into a highly complex (and very often insecure) desktop application.
As browser vendors have extended functionality and support to new technologies, security researchers and hackers are continuously looking for new vulnerabilities. In this talk, Roberto and Scott will share results of their assiduous browser bug hunting. The talk will examine techniques used to discover critical and less severe vulnerabilities in some of the most popular browsers on the market.
This talk will focus heavily (but not exclusively) on the following areas:
- Memory corruption bugs;
- New approaches to DOM fuzzing;
- Old school techniques against new browser technology;
- Cross Context Scripting and injection attacks;
- SOP Bypass;
The presentation will conclude with a montage of on-stage demonstrations of previously unreleased vulnerabilities, including remote code execution, injections and other tailored browser exploits.
MongoDB 2.8 Replication Internals: Fitting it all togetherScott Hernandez
MongoDB replication internal architecture for 2.8
Abstract:
Replication in MongoDB requires deep integration with almost every part of the codebase, and has important hooks in various systems like storage, indexing, command processing and querying. Most of the replication components have seen a major overhaul recently in order to make further improvements. In this talk we will address what those pieces are, how they interact, and interesting choices made during their design. In this talk we get into the interaction of the replication protocols, commands really, writes and write concern enforcement, consensus (elections/ leader/follower/ majority) behaviors, and down into the depths of oplog generation and application on replicas. While a large part of the talk will be a technical overview of the big pieces we will dive into many important areas in order to ensure better understanding. The audience will be able to greatly affect which areas we focus on during the session, so come with ideas and a focus.
Internals of replication in mongodb. These internals cover replication selection, the replication process, elections (and the rules), and oplog transformation.
This presentation was given at the MongoDB San Francisco conference.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

A tale of scale & speed: How the US Navy is enabling software delivery from l...sonjaschweigert1
Rapid and secure feature delivery is a goal across every application team and every branch of the DoD. The Navy’s DevSecOps platform, Party Barge, has achieved:
- Reduction in onboarding time from 5 weeks to 1 day
- Improved developer experience and productivity through actionable findings and reduction of false positives
- Maintenance of superior security standards and inherent policy enforcement with Authorization to Operate (ATO)
Development teams can ship efficiently and ensure applications are cyber ready for Navy Authorizing Officials (AOs). In this webinar, Sigma Defense and Anchore will give attendees a look behind the scenes and demo secure pipeline automation and security artifacts that speed up application ATO and time to production.
We will cover:
- How to remove silos in DevSecOps
- How to build efficient development pipeline roles and component templates
- How to deliver security artifacts that matter for ATO’s (SBOMs, vulnerability reports, and policy evidence)
- How to streamline operations with automated policy checks on container images
