The traditional MySQL solution for our suite of web applications had hit its ceiling. MongoDB was chosen as the candidate for exploration into NoSQL implementations, and now serves as our go-to data store for rapid application deployment. This talk will detail several of the MongoDB use cases at MMF, from serving 2TB+ of geolocation data, to time-series data for live tracking, to user sessions, app logging, and beyond. Topics will include migration patterns, indexing practices, backend storage choices, and application access patterns, monitoring, and more.

Microservices solutions can provide fast access to large datasets by synchronizing SQL data into an in-JVM memory store and using key-value and column key stores. This allows querying terabytes of data in microseconds by mapping the data in memory and providing application programming interfaces. The solution uses periodic synchronization to initially load and periodically reload data, as well as reactive synchronization to capture and replay database changes.

SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.
