Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) involves intentionally recharging aquifers to increase storage for later use or provide environmental benefits. There are two types - intended recharge through projects and unintended recharge from flood mitigation. MAR can help adapt to climate change, reduce over-abstraction, and restore groundwater balances. Sources include surface water, treated wastewater, stormwater, and desalinated seawater. Techniques are borehole infiltration and aquifer storage and recovery. The EU guidance document on MAR considers requirements of legislation like the Water Framework Directive and defines authorization requirements. There are over 1,200 documented MAR schemes globally and 224 in Europe.
