Reason is that such people are inspiring communities to invest in preparedness for disasters and climate change. No such initiative has been taken so far to inspire and reward such people for their selfless service.
Keeping this need in mind, Saritsa Foundation in partnership with iCONGO (International Confederation of NGO's) and Apeejay Karmayuga has instituted awards to honour with Karmaveer Chakra Award to the individuals/institutions of India and SAARC countries who have outstanding contribution in the field of capacity building for of communities for Disaster Risk Reduction - Disaster Management, adaptation to climate change at local level.

1. About Karmaveer Awards
The “KARMAVEER PURASKAAR (KVP)” are the National/International Awards for Social
Justice and Citizen Action instituted by the people sector with various partner
organisations, citizens at large and media supporters. The awards are a part of the RIGHT
every WRONG movement and are accompanied by the RIGHT every WRONG Conclave, a
forum where various eminent and concerned people have shared and discussed views on
socio-political issues, be it about poverty alleviation, marginalization, communal issues,
HIV, Disability, Disaster Management Preparedness and Partnership at community level,
climate change, electoral reforms or humane capitalism.
The awards are given every year in the month of February/March. However National
Social Justice and Citizen Action Day is celebrated on 26th November. The day is
adopted as constitutional pledge as a REPUBLIC and Indian Citizens in 1949. This year we
celebrate the 5th year of “KARMAVEER”, an annual awards & recognition, to encourage,
celebrate and inspire citizen’s action for social justice. The people sector instituted these
awards based on a simple passion mantra- to recognize real life unsung heroes who believe
‘It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness’ and have walked that extra mile
to “Be the change they want to see in this world”. KARMAVEER awardees are dubbed by
the people as NOBLE LAUREATES. Various Karmaveer awardees in the past have been
featured in documentaries and articles on Discovery Channel, National Geographic, BBC,
TIME and gone on to win global fellowships, awards and become ambassadors of
international and UN organisations.
The first recipient of this award was Dr. Verghese Kurien, Amul Dairy fame. Subsequently,
this annual award has been presented by many eminent persons like Shri. Anna Hazare, Dr.
M. S. Swaminathan, Smt. Anu Agha, MP and Industrialist, Mr. Alyque Padamsee, Rahul Bose
and many others who have rendered meritorious service for humanity.
Dr. Colonel N M Verma received Karmaveer Puraskar for the year 2013-14 on 27th
February 2014.
About Saritsa Charity Trust (Saritsa Foundation)
Dr. Colonel N M Verma is Director General of Saritsa Foundation-A Mobile University for
Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change. He was awarded this prestigious
Karmaveer Puraskar on 27th February, 2014 for his outstanding contribution in the field of
empowering women, girls, children, youth, disabled, seniors and citizens by building their
capacity by generating information, imparting knowledge and training as inclusive
dimension of Life Saving Education at local level.
Saritsa Foundation raises awareness, imparts education and training to women, girls,
children, youth, persons with disability and citizens since its birth on 05th June 2000.
2. Saritsa Foundation works as A ‘Mobile University’ for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate
Change. The teams of Saritsa Foundation reach to the people, talks to the people and
prepare people to build capacity to minimize risks from disasters and impacts of climate
change by organizing workshops, debates, Mobile campaigns, demonstrations and mock
drills, mass contacts, seminars, family conferences and street plays. Saritsa Foundation
advocates and practices people centered, people led, and people owned methodology to
teach participants the art of survival in harsh reality of enhanced threats of disasters. It has
build capacity amongst 2,25,000 people including 10,050 persons with disability in 19
states of rural and urban India. The valuable contribution for preparing people by Saritsa
Foundation at the bottom of the pyramid of preparedness for disasters is appreciated
nationally and internationally including United Nations International Strtegy for Disaster

Dr. Colonel N M Verma a ‘Noble Laureate’ of Karmaveer Puraskar has identified the
importance of inspiring individuals/institutions and recognized their valuable contribution
in the field of preparing people at grass root level to protect lives and means of livelihood
by recognizing their selfless service and justice to people to prepare them for disasters and
impacts of climate change. He took the initiative to request Apeejay Karmayuga
authorities to make this award (Karmaveer Chakra) part of recognitions of people for social
justice and citizen action in the field of disaster preparedness of communities.

These awards are instituted for two categories of participants:-
1) SARITSA FOUNDATION Karmaveer Chakra (KVC) for Individuals working to
Impart Life saving Education at local Levels for minimising risks from
Disasters and Climate Change in rural areas.
2) SARITSA FOUNDATION Karmaveer Chakra (KVC) for Individuals working to
Impart Life saving Education at local Levels for minimising risks from
Disasters and Climate Change in Urban areas.
Please note that the above award shall be given to the individuals/institutions of
India as well as nationals of SAARC countries who are contributing in the field of
capacity building for disaster management with the communities at grass root level.
