The Avermetrics™ Test and Measurement System
has been engineered from the ground up for produc-
tion line testing of electronic products, subassemblies,
boards, and components. It was designed by an engi-
neering team with extensive product development and
testing experience, with performance and the total cost
of testing as clear design criteria.
This system, and the currently available range of plug-
in modules, offers a wide range of test capabilities,
from professional, semi-professional, and consumer
audio product testing, to basic board level tests, to pro-
cess control, and more. New modules to add new tests
are being added to the library every day.
Modular System
This is a modular system using a custom 1U rack
designed to hold up to 4 modules. The system is highly
scalable: Racks may be interconnected using the
AVERLINK™ connectors on the back of each rack unit;
up to 64 rack units holding up to 254 modules can be
connected in a single system. Internally, each module
has an array of processors, and the system is organized
as a large, interconnected two-dimensional array of
these processors in a distributed intelligence configu-
ration. Because each module is intelligent it does its
own analysis, so tests across multiple modules occur in
parallel, significantly reducing testing time.
Communication
XOS™ is an XML-based operating system that is at
the core of the test system. To define tests or do other
operations, a host computer sends simple XML com-
mands via Telnet. The XOS operating system interprets
these commands, routes them to the proper module
or modules, collects the results, and sends them back
to the host computer in an easy-to-parse XML format.
Literally any programming language and operating
system that can open a networking socket will support
XOS and this system.
Software Support
Avermetrics supplies documentation, C++ classes that
handle all aspects of communication with the system
and parsing of XML commands and results, and exam-
ple applications (with complete source code) to get you
started. One of those example applications, AverTest,
provides full-featured test execution using simple XML
test and limit definition files so you can start testing on
the production line right away.
Future Proof
The system supports a complete Device Firmware Up-
date capability so new features and updated firmware
can be programmed into existing systems in the field,
with no downtime. Adding new tests and more chan-
nels is as simple as plugging new modules and racks
into an existing system. Your investment in testing
never goes obsolete.
Modules
Currently, there are six different modules available to
test audio and analog signals, and to control process
operation and interact with external sensors and digi-
tal signals. More information and pricing for each of
these modules is below.

4021 Analog Audio Input Module
Any number of 4021 Input modules may be installed
in a given system. This module provides two high-per-
formance audio inputs, supporting tests over the entire
audio spectrum and a wide range of signal levels. Each
channel operates simultaneously and independently,
doubling effective throughput compared to conven-
tional audio test systems. Multiple modules in a sys-
tem all operate in parallel, greatly reducing test time
for multi-channel measurements when compared to
switched, repetitive testing.
Signal inputs are via balanced XLR connectors. Single-
ended signals are supported by grounding the cold in-
put (pin 3) to ground (pin 1) and driving the hot input
(pin 2) relative to ground. Ground lift is also selectable
for completely floating balanced inputs.
Currently available native tests are: FFT (32 to 65536
points), Level, DR, SNR, THD+N.

installed in a given system. This module provides two
high-performance audio outputs, providing audio
stimulus signals over the entire audio spectrum and at
a wide range of signal levels. Each output may be set to
different frequencies and/or levels. Three very low dis-
tortion oscillators are available for generating complex
stimulus signals and may be assigned in any combina-
tion to either or both outputs.

9001 Filler Module
Rack units require that all four slots be filled with
modules to ensure proper internal communication and
signal integrity. For rack units with fewer than four
modules to meet this requirement each unused slot
is filled with a filler module, which provides needed
signal routing and termination.
Cost
9001 Filler Module $125

3101 Isolated I/O Module
This module provides eight opto-isolated inputs ,eight
reed relay SPST outputs, and a fully isolated power
supply. This supply can provide power for small exter-
nal sensors and other test-fixture circuits, and in some
situations may simplify external connections to the
system.
Because the inputs, outputs, and power are all com-
pletely isolated from the system ground and internal
signals, this module is perfect for controlling processes
in noisy environments or adjusting sensitive analog
signals internal to test devices.
The eight opto-isolated inputs can be used to sense the
state of external signals, such as proximity switches,
out of limit sensors (overtemp, overvoltage, etc.),
switch closures, test status, and other binary events.
Similarly, the eight reed relay outputs can be used to
close circuits during board-level tests, actuate motors,
valves, or other process control components, light an-
nunciators, etc. These are very high reliability relays;
they are rated at 109
cycles at low signal levels, and can
handle up to 10W.
Eight Green LEDs indicate the state of the opto-iso-
lated input signals, while eight Red LEDs indicate the
state of the reed relay outputs for easy visual feedback.
The isolated power supply provides up to 100ma of
current across any of the available 12V, 5V, and 3.3V
outputs. All outputs are short-circuit protected and
current limited. Power is available on both the input
and output connectors.

module, with the omission of the isolated power sup-
ply. All other specifications and features are identical to
the 3101 module.
Cost
3102 Isolated I/O Module $750
3103 Digital I/O Module
This module provides eight opto-isolated inputs and 32
digital voltage level outputs, along with a dual bidirec-
tional SPI control port. This module is ideal for control
of external test sets, test devices, and manufacturing
processes.
The opto-isolated inputs are identical to those on the
3101/3102 Isolated I/O modules. No power is supplied
by this module to drive external circuitry, other than
what is available directly from the digital outputs.
The outputs are selectable (in 8-bit banks) between
3.3V and 5V logic levels. These are high-current out-
puts and can source or sink up to 12ma each.
The SPI connector has MISO, MOSI, SCK, and two
CS signals and can support two bidirectional SPI ports
for control and initialization of test devices and/or test
sets. These signals are independent of the 32 digital I/O
outputs and opto-isolated inputs.
