The document discusses the global use of English and the need to teach English as a world language rather than focusing only on British or American standards. It outlines three categories of English usage - inner circle countries where English is a primary language, outer circle countries that were former colonies, and expanding circle countries where English is used internationally. The document argues that English teachers should expose students to multiple varieties of English used globally to better prepare them for intercultural communication in an increasingly interconnected world.
Task-based language teaching (TBLT) is an approach that engages learners in performing tasks using the target language. It focuses on meaningful language use rather than language forms. There are three main elements in TBLT: language data, information, and opportunities for practice. A task is an activity where learners use the target language for a communicative purpose. TBLT advocates like David Nunan and C. Candlin believe it provides a natural context for language learning. The rationale for TBLT is that tasks provide both input and output practice for acquisition, and task performance is motivating for learners. A key part of TBLT is the task cycle, which involves pre-task preparation
International payment methods provide security for international trade transactions. The main methods include letters of credit, documentary collections, bills of exchange, and open accounts. Letters of credit provide the highest security and involve a bank guarantee of payment if documents are presented on time. Documentary collections provide more security than open accounts but less than letters of credit by requiring documents before releasing goods. The payment method chosen depends on balancing security, cost, and risk assumed by buyers and sellers.
This document provides an overview of a book titled "World English: A Study of its Development" by Janina Brutt-Griffler. The book examines how English has become a global language through the processes of language spread and language change. It argues that English owes its status as a world language not just to imperialism, but also to the agency of non-native English speaking communities in reshaping the language. The book aims to connect the study of how English spread with how it changed, in order to understand how post-colonial writers have made English their own. It proposes analyzing English's global development through the lens of "macroacquisition" by bilingual speech communities rather than through political or social frameworks.

The document discusses international payment methods, outlining the most common options including open account, direct transfer, check, letter of credit, collection, and bill of exchange. It notes that the choice of payment method depends on the risk assumed by the parties and cost of the transaction. A chart also compares the different methods on a scale of security of payment versus risk of non-payment.
1) English has become a global language with more non-native speakers than native speakers. It is spoken by over 1.5 billion people worldwide and is used extensively in business, science, and pop culture.
2) Braj Kachru coined the term "World Englishes" to describe the diverse varieties of English that have developed as the language has spread globally. While traditionally only British English was considered the standard, Kachru argued that local Englishes have developed their own rules and norms.
3) English is becoming localized in many countries, taking on aspects of local languages and cultures while still providing a common means of global communication. It is growing as a means of cultural expression rather than solely as
The document discusses the concept of World Englishes and its development over time. It covers several key topics:
- Kachru's model of concentric circles that categorizes varieties of English into Inner Circle, Outer Circle, and Expanding Circle.
- The stratification of English and how its functions have been studied in various interactional contexts across circles.
- Issues around bilingual creativity in English literatures from places in contact with English. This has resulted in multicanons and a shift in the traditional English canon.
- Sociolinguistic factors like nativization and Englishization that have shaped the development of English varieties worldwide.
- Pedagogical reasons for teaching
This document provides an overview of common documentation used in international trade. It discusses various trade documents including air waybills, bills of lading, certificates of origin, combined transport documents, commercial invoices, bills of exchange, insurance certificates, packing lists, and inspection certificates. For each document type, it describes the purpose, required contents, and parties typically involved. The document aims to explain the key information and standards required for important trade documents to be valid and acceptable.
The document discusses various methods of payment used in international trade. It describes cash in advance, where payment is received before shipment of goods; letters of credit, where a bank guarantees payment to the exporter if documents are presented; and documentary collections, where banks facilitate payment from the importer to exporter after shipment. It outlines the parties involved in letters of credit and the typical process. The advantages and disadvantages as well as suitability of each payment method is explained. Examples are provided of industries that commonly use certain methods. Factors related to wire transfers, credit cards, and checks are also summarized.
Task based language teaching (formato 2010)Patrmartin
Task-based language teaching (TBLT) is an approach that uses tasks as the core unit of planning and instruction. A task is an activity or goal carried out using language. The key principles of TBLT are that language is used for meaningful communication, lessons involve purposeful activities and tasks, and learning a language is best when it mirrors real-world language use. TBLT focuses on the process of learning through tasks that provide opportunities for input, output, and negotiation of meaning rather than solely teaching language structures. The teacher takes on roles like selecting and sequencing tasks, preparing learners, and raising learner consciousness of the language.
Issues and implications of world Englishes for teachersMelanie Gonzalez
This document summarizes a presentation on issues and implications of World Englishes for teachers. It discusses how English became an international language, attitudes surrounding its role, and pedagogical implications for teaching English as a foreign language versus English as a second language. Key terms are defined and Kachru's 3-circle model of World English is explained. Examples of variations in lexicon, grammar and phonology in World Englishes are provided, as well as implications for English language teaching.
Task-based language teaching (TBLT) is an approach that uses tasks as the core unit of planning and instruction in language teaching. It draws on principles of communicative language teaching, where real communication activities that use language for meaningful tasks promote learning. In TBLT, the focus is on process, communication, meaning, and interacting purposefully through activities and tasks that simulate real-life experiences. A task is defined as an activity or goal carried out using language. Lessons following TBLT are designed around objectives and sequenced tasks. The teacher takes on roles of selecting, preparing, and providing feedback on tasks while students take on participant, monitor, risk-taker, and innovator roles.
This presentation discusses World Englishes and its emergence and development over time. It defines World Englishes as localized varieties of English that have developed in territories influenced by Britain. The presentation outlines different models of World Englishes, including Kachru's three-circle model classifying varieties based on their status. It also discusses debates around issues like errors versus differences in indigenous Englishes and the influence of languages and cultures on emerging Englishes. The presentation concludes by considering the future of World Englishes in terms of multilingualism, multiculturalism and linguistic human rights.
INTERNATIONAL TRADE DOCUMENTS used in Export and Import Procedures are Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Certificate of Origin, Irrevocable Letter of Credit, Bill of Lading and CMR Document.
This document discusses various methods of payment for export sales, including cash in advance, open account, letters of credit, sight bills, and usance bills. Cash in advance requires upfront payment before goods are shipped. Open account allows goods to be shipped before payment is due, usually within 30-90 days, but carries the highest risk for exporters. Letters of credit provide a bank guarantee of payment if terms are met. Sight bills require payment on delivery of documents, while usance bills allow acceptance of payment within an agreed credit period after delivery.
The document investigates influential factors on the practice of using Englishes by local undergraduates at City University of Hong Kong. It discusses a survey given to undergraduates to determine which vocabulary items and phrases they use more frequently in both American English and British English. The survey questions cover topics such as transportation, food, greetings, and school enrollment terminology to analyze influences on the undergraduates' English usage.
This document provides information about task-based language teaching (TBLT). It begins by defining a task as "an activity where the target language is used by the learner for a communicative purpose (goal) in order to achieve an outcome." It then explains that TBLT engages learners in authentic language use through a series of tasks to both acquire new linguistic knowledge and proceduralize existing knowledge. The document outlines the rationale and design of TBLT, including its focus on meaning over form, motivation through task achievement, and negotiation of learning difficulty. It also discusses the role of the teacher in guiding tasks and providing feedback, as well as the role of students in interacting and presenting results.

Sinergie digitali tra latino e matematica: il progetto Lagrange e Cicerone al computer
Abstract

How to learn the medical English you really need Howard Vickers
Learning the correct specialist terms is important for doctors and nurses, but there is much more to learning medical English. Students of medical English can prepare for real-life situations by using role-play to practice the language skills they need.
Learning with technology – teaching without (cotesol presentation)Howard Vickers
How can teachers support mobile learning without using technology during class? The presentation explores how students can bring real-life, linguistic experiences into class and how teachers can help the students learn from these experiences. Through exploring case studies, you will gain both practical suggestions for activities and guiding pedagogical principles.
Virtual quests dialogic language learning with 3d virtual worldsHoward Vickers
The incorporation of 3D virtual worlds into WebQuests offers a more exploratory approach to language learning, where the learner engages in social, immersive and creative activities as part of the quest’s research. This experiential learning leads the teacher to play a greater facilitator-role and to focus more on responding to students’ needs, and less on preemptively teaching. Dogme language teaching, with its focus on dialogic learning and emergent pedagogy, offers guidance in drawing on virtual world experiences for language classes.
The document discusses personal phrasebooks (PPBs), which are collections of phrases tailored to a learner's specific needs and situations. PPBs can help increase fluency and reduce cognitive load. One example is an "email phrasebook" created by a student, Michal, to collect useful phrases for writing emails at work. The teacher helps identify good phrases from emails and suggests additions. PPBs are part of a personalized learning environment (PLE) and involve setting goals, managing content and learning independently. Teachers can help learners identify suitable phrases and develop autonomy in maintaining their own PPBs.
Exploring out of-class learning - mobile devices - dogme language learningHoward Vickers
Language classes account for a relatively limited amount of the student’s learning – and much (perhaps most) of the learning is done informally, out-of-class. So, how can we as teachers change what we do in lesson to better support what the learners are doing out-of-lesson?
