AUTONOMIC
NERVOUS SYSTEM
(INTRODUCTION)
HELLO!

SYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
○ Thoracolumbar regions (T1 to L2)
○ Paravertebral sympathetic trunk attached to anterior
rami of spinal nerves
○ Supply periphery & all viscera
○ GANGLION IMPAR
CERVICAL GANLION
○ Superior formed by fusion of upper 4 cervical Ganglia
○ Middle by 5th and 6th
○ Inferior by joining of 7th and 8th cervical ganglia
○ Inferior cervical and first Thoracic fuse to form a
Cervico-Thoracic or Stellate Ganglia
SPLANCHNIC NERVES
○ Splanchnic nerves are bilateral visceral autonomic
nerves.
○ The thoracic, lumbar and sacral splanchnic nerves are
sympathetic in function while the pelvic splanchnic
nerves are parasympathetic.
○ The 3 splanchnic nerves of the thoracic sympathetic trunk,
arise from the lower 8 ganglia.
○ Greater splanchnic nerve: branches of the T5–9
sympathetic ganglia,
○ Lesser splanchnic nerve: T10–11 ganglia
○ Least splanchnic nerve: T12 ganglion.
○ These splanchnic nerves contain, predominantly, visceral
efferent fibres, as well as pain conducting visceral afferent
fibres
○ All splanchnic nerves carry preganglionic
(presynaptic) sympathetic fibers except for the pelvic
splanchnic nerves that carry preganglionic
parasympathetic fibers.
○ The lumbar splanchnic nerve, one on each side of the
body, arises from the upper two ganglia of the lumbar
part of the sympathetic chain (L1&L2
THANKS!
