GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*

AUTOMATION
2. • Automation is defined as the use of
various control systems for operating
equipment such as machinery, processes in
factories, switching in telephone networks,
steering and stabilization of ships, aircraft etc.
with minimal or reduced human intervention.
The dictionary defines automation as “the
technique of making an apparatus, a process,
or a system operate automatically.”
• Herein, the control system is a device, or set
of devices, that manages, commands, directs
or regulates the behaviour of other devices or
systems.
INTRODUCTION
3. INTRODUCTION
• Automation, especially the currently growing Industrial Automation, is a combination of
specifically designed hardware components like machine arms and a software controller
aimed at performing a series of task with programed precision subject to current working
conditions.
• The biggest benefit of automation is that it saves labour, however, it is also used to save
energy and materials and to improve quality, accuracy and precision.
• Automation provides benefits to virtually all of industry. Here are some examples:
• Manufacturing , including food and pharmaceutical, chemical and petroleum, pulp
and paper
• Transportation , including automotive, aerospace, and rail
• Utilities , including water and wastewater, oil and gas, electric power, and
telecommunications
• Defence
• Facility operations , including security, environmental control, energy management,
safety, and other building automation
4. TRENDS
Reducing the human workload by the means of Automations or
developing easy to use system interfaces being the latest trend for
leading companies to increasing consumer base, the growth in
Automation in various fields has provided for such requirements.
There are many latest trends in this sphere .
• Utilisation in development of Un-manned Automobiles
Such vehicles are already under developed and being use on
a smaller scale in the industries as automated guided
vehicle or automatic guided vehicle (AGV) which is a
mobile robot that follows markers or wires in the floor, or uses
vision, magnets, or lasers for navigation. Its is mostly used for
carrying materials fro one place to another.
5. TRENDS
Trends in Automation leaning towards reducing or totally eliminating human intervention may
grain more traction in the coming years. The ones to make the most impact could be:
Driverless Cars Robotics
Automated Restaurants
6. AREAS OF INTEREST
• For the chosen topic, my area of interest is, in a broader sense, Industrial Automation and
in a narrower sense, utilisation of industrial automation in the development of unmanned-
autonomous cars. The reason for this is the great scope of the field and use of the area
in the current global scenario.
• Development of unmanned-autonomous cars is in itself an innovative endeavour. Such
cars or even trains for that matter are the need of the hour. Shifting the entire traffic
system onto a network where each vehicle is aware of another will lead to fewer
accidents. Many innovations can be made in this field like:
• Vehicle Occupant safety assistance-in case the hardware malfunctions in an
automated vehicle, providing a manual driving system.
• Development of automated devices to help in the health sector like performing
automated surgeries.
• If provided with an opportunity for an internship at Mphasis, I would like to work on the
development of algorithms and coding done for the microprocessors used in the control
systems of the Automations.
