Know the syllabus
• Places of worship – invite
• Rites of passage – baptism, weddings.
• Important stories – Christmas, Easter
• Special journeys – pilgrimages
“As Christians, we believe…” check with the school about
how they would like you to talk about things.

The law says that all pupils shall take part in an act of
collective worship every day… which must be ‘wholly or
mainly of a broadly Christian character… reflecting the
broad traditions of Christian belief’. Other faiths and
themes can be covered, but mainly Christianity.
However, Ofsted stopped inspecting collective worship in
2004, after 76 per cent of schools were found to be non-
compliant.

RE Syllabus
• Are there any children known to you or
the church which attend the school?
• Who else goes into school?
• Do other churches have a relationship
with the school?
• Try to network with other visitors
• Write to the school
• Consider the things you can offer
the school
• Do you already know any of the
teachers/staff?
• What support is available from your
diocese?
• Make an appointment to meet the
head teacher.
• Get trained up!
