2. Mentoring
Christian Mentoring is a one-on-one
relational experience in which one
person empowers another person by
investing their God-given wisdom and
resources.

3. Mentoring
“The greatest gift we can give is to be alongside
another person.”
“At this time, when there is a search for identity
and meaning young people especially benefit from
having space to explore and restore themselves
through the accompanying relationship.”

5. Boundaries and expectations
1. Why do you want to be mentored? What do you expect to get out of our time together? What do
you expect to give?
2. How often and where will we meet?
3. How will we communicate between meetings?
4. What is confidential, and what is not? What can we talk about, and what can we not?
5. What is my commitment to you? And your commitment to me?
6. Build trust, set an agenda and offer your network and perspective

6. Mentoring works for “at risk” kids: “Mentored youth
have better attendance, a better chance of going on
to higher education, better attitudes towards school,
stronger ability to avoid substance abuse, more
positive social attitudes and relationships, and greater
trust of, and communication with, parents.”

Promising Strategy for Youth Development”, February 2002, Child Trends Research Brief. Go

7. Mentoring is simply pointing
them in the right direction
and walking with them on the
journey. —Mark Engelthaler

8. • Listen (active listening, reflective listening)
• Ask open questions
• Enable them to discover their own answers / plan of action
• Watch body language - read between the lines
• Don’t respond until they have finished speaking!
• Share / offer experiences and wisdom carefully (don’t take over)
• Don’t give answers, or solve problems (that’s not your job)
• Pray together - put the focus on Jesus being part of the solution
